Just to clarify what may be a language problem; stand oil is not a 'vehicle', but a 'medium'. The medium is the substance in which the pigment is ground to make the paint. The 'vehicle' is what you would use to dilute the medium or make it flow more easily - e.g. turpentine. In the same way that water is the 'vehicle' for acrylic paint.

Thank you! I was having a hard time to hear as thorough of a breakdown as you have explained here. I’m currently using a 1/3 to 2/3 mix to wipe down and prep my working surface. Not only do i find that the paint brushes on smoother; there seems to me more build up of transparent layering in between each session, that for me, highlights the layering effects and body of the result im hoping to achieve. This is still a new technique to me, but so far i enjoy the look, though it takes a little longer to dry fully.

Jos Van Riswick uses stand oil mixed with alkyd resin as an undercoat for his paintings. To keep parts of the painting from drying out at different rates while he paints "into the soup" as he calls it.

Florent, what if I’ve made a layer on my painting...using JUST Williamsburg stand oil ?! No mineral spirit mixed in. How can I go on the next layers? Can I just keep using JUST linseed stand oil for this painting? You are right it was not quite comfortable but I like the result.

Hi, can you mix leendsid oil with acrylic paint to make the acrylic dry slower?

  • @bjosephine4308

I use Stand oil without mixing with other mediums. How? I use soft pastels technique using stand oil. I put very little stand oil and then use finger to spread colors very lightly and gently. And when it dries up then use regular brushes for detail work.

    Brand new to your channel.
Still a little confused about one thing. I don't understand the connection in terms of usage between using standoil and what to do with it when you paint. Can you explain a little bit better. Thank you.

I've heard other people say that you can use linseed stand oil without any solvent. But only when you are trying to get the mattest part of your painting (which has dried) to get some of the gloss back. The people who said that was in a conversation about varnishing the paintings, so they're meaning was: if your finished, dried painting has a big difference in gloss, you can brush dry linseed stand oil over the painting, let that dry and then varnish it.
what's your opinion about that? And I care about your opinion. Thanks in advance :)

So first you say dont use more than 50% solvent and then you say a great recipie is 2/3 solvent?

I thought that too. But I think maybe he meant don't use over 50% mixed with paint??? Lol. Not sure 🤔

Instead of talking at the viewer, it might be far more useful to show the oil being mixed with solvent, some paint, and how that looks during application, when more painting occurs the next day or later, how layers blend or stay distinct, how long it is workable, how long it takes to begin and finish curing. Of course, adding why the same appearance can just be achieved using various Liquins in a fraction of the time with less complications would be helpful as well.
