    Due to copyright issues, this video that was originally 1 hour and 15 minutes long had to be split up into two parts. I don't know why it worked like that. Both halves work perfectly fine, but put together and woah, stop the presses.

      @@lauraduarte712It's a meme about the Man of Steel movie, Zack Snyder's live action reimagining of Superman. In an effort to make it a "darker, more realistic" work, Zack missed the point of Superman and featured him killing Zod at the end of the movie via neck snap. OP was likely poking fun at the tonal shift this live action rendition of ATLA forced on the atmosphere of the show.

    Netflix Avatar doesn't even try to work for it''s payoff, yet acts like it deserves it. What pisses me off is that the REAL version didn't have to explain every bloody thing to get it's point across and hit those narrative gut-punches. It used good dialogue, great characters, and excellent animation. It didn't have to talk down to its audience like a teacher in a head injury ward. Just like every single live action adaptation, it guts itself to appeal to an ungrateful demographic that probably weren't going to appreciate it in the first place. Now they suddenly don't have an audience at all and scratch their heads thinking, "Well if we try it AGAIN it'll work this time!"

    The air nomads all gathering at the southern air temple to pay reverence to the newly-discovered avatar would’ve made way more sense than them gathering to that particular temple-where the newly discovered avatar came from-than simply going there for the comet festival. And even that would’ve still be unnecessary. In the cartoon, Sozin explains he hit all the air temples to leave no stone unturned. They didn’t have to all be in one place for the genocide to occur.

      I guess it s one of those things the test audience didn t get.

    • @mclaude3
      @mclaude3 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      YES!!! All the air nomads gathering to pay homage to the new avatar would have been perfect, because it could also work in the sense that it would immediately drive home to Aang the weight of such an overwhelming responsibility.

    • @kataraluver
      @kataraluver 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      How would that make more sense? Y’all are saying a whole lot of nothing 💀😂 In the cartoon they didn’t go around telling everyone Aang was the Avatar. The elders at Aang’s temple knew for years but didn’t tell anyone, because Gyatso wanted to protect Aang and keep his identity a secret. If they told every person they knew Aang would’ve been a massive target and the Fire Nation would’ve found out and tried hunting him down. The Great Comet Festival makes way more sense bc it only comes every 100 years so it’d be a once in a lifetime event people would want to go to, and it doesn’t expose Aang’s identity.
      Also, do you guys know what “nomad” means lol? The Air Nomads didn’t always live at the temples, they moved around all over the world. The festival idea makes more sense bc it forces the majority of the nomads to go to one area or atleast the 4 temples they originate from and explains how they all died. Attacking the 4 temples otherwise doesn’t make much sense if the majority of nomads live all over the world anyway. I feel like this is just nit picky

    The thing hurting this show the most is nepotism.
    This affected the writing (the head netflix writer is a sports journalist)
    But also the direction. (Again, rookies)
    You can tell the young actors were left unsupervised and with minimal number of takes. Thus the bland katara and overserious aang.
    There are also a lot of basic mistakes in filming (lighting is médiocre, dutch plan wasn t mastered, same for dialogues)
    This lead to an overuse of small sets with greenscreens. You can tell they are on one in any scene where they end up doing the walking- while-talking thing...
    It s a sad waste of a great cast, lots of money and a waiting fanbase. With 150millions dollars, one can imagine what good writers and directors could do with such a cast.

    @b1uezer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +125

    A little tid-bit I learned from another video that had insider info: The exposition dump was intentional. The target audience during test screenings were people that knew nothing of Avatar, and were confused by the original story beats. This was supposed closer to the original pacing, went through several drafts, and was changed so that those people had no question on what was going on. Instead of focusing on the fan base with their story, they essentially tried to dip into fans and newbies at the same time. This show is entirely built around telling the audience what's going on.

      @squiddler7731 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      @@OurBrainHurtsALot Technically they didn't get it right away, because none of that exposition was in the first episode. The air nomads being completely gone wasn't established until episode 3, Sozin's comet wasn't mentioned until episode 8, Aang's backstory on how he ended up in the iceberg isn't until episode 12, and we don't learn more about Fire Lord Sozin until episode 6 of _season 3._ Here, all of that stuff is thrown at viewers before you ever get to properly meet the main cast aside from Aang.
      Honestly when you think about it, it's no wonder people were confused. The only reason you would ever start the show there is to specifically appeal to avatar fans, for everyone else it makes no sense. Even with the little details this is inherently confusing. They talk about how sozin's comet enhances firebending, but as a viewer we have no reference for what that means, we haven't even seen normal firebending. And in the first few minutes there's a heavy focus on the earth kingdom (the first bender we see in action is an earth bender), even though in both the cartoon and live action, the earth kingdom won't be relevant for another two hours of runtime. Kids would've been just as confused by the cartoon if this was how it opened, but instead we have the iconic line "Then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked" as all the context we need.

  • @thylionheart
    @thylionheart 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +61

    the whole “Wolf Cove” thing honestly bothers me a lot ‘cause in the cartoon, the fact that there’s literally only half a dozen women, some elderly women, and a bunch of kids under like, 8 max, is genuinely important. You feel how utterly vulnerable they are and can understand why Sokka is so excessive with his warrior attitude and drills. Heck, he has *lived* through a Fire Nation raid and lost his mom from it. The possibility of it happening again is very real to him. Then with Katara, we can imagine how she probably felt over the years, hoping that one of those little kids would turn out to be a bender….and then it never happens. Now all the men are gone and there’s no more chances for another bender to be born in her tribe until the men get back from the war or those little kids grow into adults and either have kids with each other. Not to mention marriage and child prospects for Katara! She obviously can’t marry her _brother_ (not *that* kind of Game of Thrones, please I beg) and her only other option is to either wait for one of the kids to become an old enough adult (ew, I know) or the men come back and she becomes one of _their_ wives. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember the men of the Water Tribe being particularly on the young side. Same thing goes for Sokka in the marriage department. And until either of them find lovers or the men come back from the war, the village is stagnant in number. It cannot grow-it can only lose.
    But in the live action, there’s a bunch of people, they feel far less vulnerable and weakened as a tribe, and there’s fellow teens and tweens around their age that could be future prospective lovers (and therefore, future prospective *fellow waterbenders* especially for Katara) which means that the village can continue to grow in number much faster than it could in the original show. It’s just a completely different state of war-torn and affected that I don’t think conveys the extent to which the Fire Nation _devastated_ the Southern Water Tribe, especially since by calling it “Wolf Cove” you’re implying it’s not the only village-so are there no waterbenders in other villages?
    Implications are such an important thing to consider when writing a narrative.

      Wolf Cove was not new for this show. It is the name for the area where the Southern Water Tribe village is located and historically the name of one of the water tribe cities in the area. Of course by time we are introduced to it in the OG, Wolf Cove city is a small village thanks to events that happened during the age of Kyoshi followed years later by the fire nation raids during the Hundred Year War. It was rebuilt after the end of the war.

Instead of massive landmass filled with benders that naturally counter you, and two hidden ice masses in which is too cold and too wet. Air nomads makes most sense to take out. Imagen if the Firenation conducted four simultaneous raids on the four Airnation temples.
    We woudnt even need a close up fight, it would have been way more epic if we just got wide shots of the four tembles, but just waves of fire exploding from the windows and courtyards, under a blood red sky.
    The wight of the genocide has been completely snuffed. The fight with Boomie has more of an umpf, and it would save on the budget.

That and it would have been really cool to learn that they followed their food source. Using the fire nation wreck as a land marker would have been nice btw. All they would have to show is Katara help set up camp and sombody mention that they'd be moving within a few days, to a week or whatever. Then that could give reason to why Sokka and Katara go out fishing and essentially finding Aang. Added note I wish we could see how they got sea cucumbers. Sozin was the Fire Lord. I think Sozin's plan was to sort of "chase " the avatar back into a fire incarnation, which he could then control .
    We do know, after all, that after he thought he might have killed the air nomad avatar, he kept up raids on the Southern Water Tribe, which is where the Avatar was supposed to be born next in the cycle (it seems the avatar shifts from both element to element and tribe to tribe), and seemed intent on capturing all the waterbenders. That meant somebody sent him there "TO" spy or his party he was with had been taken out in a ambush. That info was left out so I'm guessing on that idea. I don't think he would have gotten far to begin with but the guy was not even trying to escape. Like creating a wall BEHIND himself instead of in front. A small self-preservation would have been nice.
    4:24 I have to ask... Wouldn't they ALREADY know? I mean the airbenders wouldn't susspect a betrayl coming before so wouldn't they have mentioned to the fire sages that the next avatar HAD BEEN FOUND? That they were just waiting for him to grow up?

      @@joshbuoy8661 Aang had mentioned that he started playing with the ancient avatar relics when he was quote "little". They don't EXACTLY say how old. Neither was it brought up in the cartoon that the other nations knew about this. So it would have been interesting to watch the suspense grow when Sozin found out about Aang via messenger bird and began to hunt him down.
      You know, this just popped in my head. A good scene to work on would have been how they found out Aang was the next avatar. For perspective a short scene of monk Gyatso giving Aang the toy or relic test at the age of hmmm, four or five. Kids naturally love toys so a child actor of that age only needs to pick up the toy (even hand the toy to the child out of frame) and have Gyatso look on as his guardian and father figure. Scene done. A good show don't tell scene with maybe Sozin's voice declaring they will hunt down this new avatar and anyone who protects him. Making the audience worried for the little guy.

    when I sat down and watched this with my mom and little sister, I suddenly realized who's intended audience this was aimed at. This show were for people who, like my mom specifically, refused to watch the original due to it being a "cartoon for children" (my mom strays away from a lot of goated media aimed at children despite her love for Marvel and DC comics. Its for kids afterall; theres no serious themes going on for adults to enjoy... obviously... 🙄🙄🙄). She likes the show. Kinda. She did say it was confusing and hard to follow, and thus, with her having untreated and undiagnosed ADHD, she lost interest in watching the show very quickly. My sister too lost interest for being confused... which is funny in hindsight for all the expo dump they do throughout the first few episodes 💀
    The majority of the time watching I had to fill them in on scenes that didn't make sense because they took out parts that would've been perfect had they did a 1 to 1 recreation (like how they showed the ice orb but not Aang inside of it, so my mom was confused as to where he appeared from, thinking he spawned from the light that came from it. She was also confused where Appa came from since they didn't show him inside the orb with him either. During that iconic Aang talking to himself scene my mom was like "...Well that was weird. Who the hell was he talking to, us? Was that supposed to be a 4th wall break?"). Now, that being said, I don't mind adaptations not copying beat for beat of the story they're based off of. I encourage a retelling, thats what makes it cool to watch for viewers who already know the story after all! ...But god damn, *make it make sense* 😭 I'm on my knees begging.

It seems like no one can do it. No, not the CG. The movements. Suddenly firebenders mostly do open-handed firebending now? The original show didn't hire a martial arts expert to make the movements of each element bending distinctive. My favourite movements from firebending are the fire-shooting fist punch and fire-shooting feet. I am probably wrong, but open palm fire in the original series usually used as a statement of power rather than usual fighting. I didn't want to repeat this all over again because I turned away from the first live action adaptation as soon as I saw firebenders there, and yet here I am again.

      Literally the only thing I could see being done better is fixing the energy bending deus ex machina. Introduce it during book two by the guru, either as an elevated technique from opening your chakras, or even as the basis for all bending (could bring in the lesson from the swamp about everything being connected, how people first learned to bend the energy within and learning to connect with the elements of nature, how benders aligned their chi with each element, etc etc.). Then either the guru or Aang could float the idea of sealing someone’s bending (Aang if he was more contemplative on the war, the guru joking about being able to gift bending to others, or the guru introduces the idea if Aang brings up the war). Then he could be practicing it to little avail due to the injury sustained at the end of book 2. Or have this bending be the catalyst for re-unlocking the Avatar state instead of being smashed into the rock.
      The lion turtle could still be the one to teach him the sealing technique, but Aang training in energy bending would be a good way to have a proper payoff in the finale when he overwhelms Ozai. And he can still feel guilt and trepidation over possibly needing to kill him because he hadn’t managed to figure out the sealing technique while also trying to realign his chakras for the Avatar state. So he still feels that his options are limited, but now his pacifism is less out of ignorance and more out of determination, even in the face of desperation over his lack of results before the big fight.

    Aang's characterization could have been a simple scene about 2 minutes in lenght max. All they had to do is have a scene in which Aang is walking through the temple with a few monks , heading for some sort of training. And on the way Aang gets distracted by fruit pies laid out on a table, get distracted by seeing kids playing and waving at him , and the monks keep not letting him get distracted , telling him over and over about the importance of his training. Then another monk walks in , looking worried, bearing the news that the fire nation is attacking the earth kingdom. And so, emergency meeting ensues and Aang's training gets posponed, much to Aang's surprise. Curios by nature, Aang sneaks off to eaves drop on the meeting to figure out what could have happened in order to make the monks act like that.
    And he hears the whole thing, that he's being sent away, that war is starting , that they'll take away his childhood, that the stakes are infinitely higher which scares him. And *that* establishes everything we need to know about Aang and gives him the motivation to run away while still doing something original.
