You have no idea how helpful you are in this tutorial... I have struggled in the past, just about giving up with cutting... Nothing was square,,, well little did I think to just use a ruler and not the mat... I turned mine over right away when I watched this, using a ruler now and my squares and anything else are even.. I don't quilt but I sew bags, and other gifts that I give away to family and friends. For the first time ever, I feel confident in how to fold fabric, cut fabric and what tools are required to do it right. Thank you so much.
Great video, with the technique I've been using for a long time. Two helpful hints I might add... one, I add sandpaper sticky dots to my rulers so there's no slipping. And 2nd, my table is in the center of the room, so no turning the mat either. My mat is larger, and I just walk around the table and cut from the other side when I need to. Works great! Keep getting this useful info out!

I loved this tutorial and feel very encouraged! I was hoping someone would have asked you in the question part of your demonstration about what is the maximum amount of yardage you work with when laying your fabric up on the mat to start cutting. Basically, when you are working with a 3 yard piece of fabric to begin, do you cut it down into smaller pieces to work with?

This really made me feel excited and hopeful because I always struggle with elbows in my strips. But I tried it (so carefully), and it didn't work. The top and bottom of my fabric weren't even somehow and I still had elbows (but then I was super mad because I didn't notice it until I had cut 5 strips).
Most excellent tips I’ve been rotary cutting for over 30years, learned it from my mom I hated the scissors cutting and attempting to cut straight lines so did she. I used to sew my clothes when it was cost effective.... now I just desire quilting to be more cost productive on my pocketbook. Thanks for the power cutting tip And now I understand the wobble in my strips... rarely do I make strips but I do... always square up my fabric. Drives me nuts to see wonky cuts... fabric store cuts off the bold makes me crazy that they don’t tear it straight and I have to loose my pricy yardage because they can’t cut straight. Why should I pay the price for their inability to cut a true yard.

This is a great tutorial--I know what to do now! I have a number of 'wonky 2.5" strips and now have a pattern that calls for 1.5" strips---any idea how I can straighten them out and not waste this fabric?
Ruth OConnor Great question! I checked with Nancy, the instructor. Here's what she had to say. "Yes, you can get straight 1.5” strips out of those wonky ones - it will just take some careful cutting. I would keep the strips folded just once so they are 22” long and use as much of the fold on the fabric as you can to line it up on a horizontal line of your 24” ruler. Be sure to set your wonky strip to fill the 1.5” wide space. You will lose probably a ½” off both sides of the pre-cut 2.5” wonky strip, but you should be able to get a good 1.5” out of that strip." I hope that helps. Let us know how it turns out.

I was anxious to try this even though I don't have a 60 cutter. I still ended up with a wonky strip. I'm thinking that when I folded it up, even though I thought I had it straight just below my folded end, I'm thinking it was a little off. Tried a few times to make sure I had it straight but still wonky. What am I missing?

Here's a response from the demonstrator: It is really great to hear you enjoyed the video and even more important that you're still learning to improve your technique. I know quilters that use the June Tailor Shape Cutters but I never found it to be as accurate or as fast as power cutting with a 12 or 15 inch square ruler. I have always found the Shape cutter slots to be wobbly and shift during the cutting process. Happy Quilting!!

Is there a similar technique that can be used to cut length of grain strips? For wall-hangings I like the stability with the length of grain since they do not stretch as much as the cross-grain strips.

what would you recommend as the longest yardage of fabric to fold like this? I am only 5'2" and folding four yards would be problematic. I would have to cut my longer pieces into manageable sections and you loose a bit in cleaning your edges.
When you start to cut the next 15" (or whatever dimension) do you use the same straight edge (left after the initial cut) or do you refold and make a new straight cut?
When using power cutting you do not have to make a new straight cut. Because your power cuts are measured using the horizontal AND vertical lines on your ruler, the straight edge is square so you don't have to take the time to make a new cut.
I checked with the instructor in this video. Here's what she had to say. "No, it wouldn't hurt, but I recommend you move the iron along the length of grain, not width of fabric as Pressing in the direction of the WOF can cause the fabric to warp."

+JoAn Godfrey I use little clear plastic disks on my rulers to keep them from sliding and as was mentioned in the video to place fingers on the ruler and not the palm of the hand.

I have always found the Shape cutter slots to be wobbly and shift during the cutting process. Happy Quilting!!

Is there a similar technique that can be used to cut length of grain strips? For wall-hangings I like the stability with the length of grain since they do not stretch as much as the cross-grain strips.

what would you recommend as the longest yardage of fabric to fold like this? I am only 5'2" and folding four yards would be problematic. I would have to cut my longer pieces into manageable sections and you loose a bit in cleaning your edges.
Size doesn't matter. Work on the edge of your table so that the bulk of your fabric is hanging off the right edge and work slowly.
When you start to cut the next 15" (or whatever dimension) do you use the same straight edge (left after the initial cut) or do you refold and make a new straight cut?
When using power cutting you do not have to make a new straight cut. Because your power cuts are measured using the horizontal AND vertical lines on your ruler, the straight edge is square so you don't have to take the time to make a new cut.

Does it hurt to press your fabric before folding & cutting?
I checked with the instructor in this video. Here's what she had to say. "No, it wouldn't hurt, but I recommend you move the iron along the length of grain, not width of fabric as Pressing in the direction of the WOF can cause the fabric to warp."

how many layers of fleece is wise to do at a time ???
I asked the demonstrator about this. Here is her reply, "You can cut 4 layers of fleece at a time if you are using a 60mm cutter. Good luck!"

i agree with everything except omnigrid rulers.... I LOVE CREATIVE GRIDS..... they don't slide when you push on them.
+JoAn Godfrey I use little clear plastic disks on my rulers to keep them from sliding and as was mentioned in the video to place fingers on the ruler and not the palm of the hand.
