Hey Russ, It was great to see you again! A year ago at this time I was full of angst about my upcoming surgery. You were one of the first prostate journeys I found on You Tube. You helped me so much! Thanks for your honesty and candor. I appreciate knowing that even 3 years out, you're still using a shield. That helps me set expectations for my own journey. Glad you're doing so well. Take care and God bless.

I'm Gleason 6, low grade cancer, PSA @ 8.9. Currently on Active Surveillance. Age 62.5. My Urologist has had his scaple ready since my biosopy 9 months ago. Additionally, 5 years cancer free after stage 4 colon cancer. I'm been plant based since 2016 and in very good condition. I'm about 75% on having the surgery. FYI, you are the only person that has had the surgery and as for as I can tell, being really honest about what to expect post surgery. It appears that surgery may be the best of all options for early detection. Thanks for put your life experiences out here for myself and other to make informed decisions. Cheers!

Is 2024 right now. What have you done regarding your prostate cancer can you please tell me. I have Gleason 3 + 4 equals 7 and I really want to do active surveillance but I have five cores out of 10 which isn't too good I know. Very curious to see what treatments you went through. Tell me anything you can thank you.

Russ, thank you for your testimony. I am 58 and my annual physical revealed a PSA of 7.2. several weeks ago I had an MRI that revealed two spots on my prostate. I have a fusion biopsy scheduled for April 4th. Needles to say I am anxious.
Your videos have encouraged me and given me hope. Also and most important, I know you are a Brother in Christ! I am believing for complete healing in Jesus'name and laying all this at His feet
So thank you again. And may God continue to shine His face upon you, protect you and your family, and give you peace.

Russ, I wanted to take a moment and share with you that your posts on prostate surgery recovery were absolutely my ray of light I relied upon during my recovery. like you, I was very incontinent immediately after surgery for the first several weeks. Your 5-1/2 week update was tremendously helpful, encouraging and gave me hope that I would be continent some day. I’m at 7 months post surgery and like you, I’m 99% continent and use a single small shield each day more for insurance than need. Thank you again for sharing your personal recovery journey, they helped me more than you will ever know!

Hi Russ….Circling Back here and sharing some of my progress for you and your viewers….I’m now +16 months post prostatectomy. It was hard for me to believe that healing and function would continue…but I’m still seeing improvement. Incontinence is +98%…only need to pay attention when laughing, coughing, sneezing, lifting….I haven’t worn a pad in months…and…surprisingly, sexual function is slowly returning. I thought that part of life was over, but maybe not..I’ll remain hopeful. I know so many are battling difficult circumstances with their PC….God bless you all, none of it is easy or fun…

Thank you for all of the videos that you have made. I found your videos just before I had my Prostatectomy and they have helped me so much. I am 2 years 3 months post surgery and the only leakage that I have is stress leakage if I pick up something heavy. My sexual function is still not totally back and the pills have not worked for me, so I use trimix. Keep up the good work of encouragement. It helps to know that we are not alone in our journey. God Bless You!

My friend Russ, I first saw your videos 3 months before I had my surgery which was April 7th 2021. I have followed you ever since. From the beginning I felt you were a Christian man, a brother in the Lord, which was very important to me. God has blessed you with courage and strength as well as a remarkable charm that makes your comments so comforting. I am 71 and was under active surveillance for 4 years. When my gleason score hit 7 it was time to make a decision on my next step. Your videos were not only informative but so helpful in knowing what to expect that the decision was not difficult. The surgery went very well with only a few bumps. My recovery up to this date has been "ahead of the curve" as my Dr. has put it. Bladder wise I am almost back to normal, very similar to what you went through. At 71 I was having slight problems wit leakage before the surgery, so this has not been a big problem to cope with. My "ED" has also followed the same path as you have traveled, but like you I have a loving and understanding wife of 50 years that is just happy I am here with her. I`m looking forward to many more years of happiness and joy with her and this surgery has been a blessing to both of us. I wish I could put into words how much I admire your willingness to put yourself in the public eye and share your story, many many times I have revisited your videos to give me strength and to encourage me when I needed a calm voice to help me move forward. I believe God has used you in a most important role, you have been a blessing to me and my wife as well as my 3 children and 9 grandchildren. They needed me to be strong through all this and you really provided much of that strength. By the way my PSA 2 weeks ago was " no detectable cancer" I thank God every day for those 3 words and I thank God for you. May God continually bless you and your family with wonderful health. P.S. you are the spitting image of my younger brother who I lost 2 years ago to lung cancer, watching you has been like sitting with my brother Ray and having him reassure me that it will be all right, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

@WallaceDunn Hi, thanks for asking. I'm 5 months and 2 weeks post surgery. The incontinence is all but past. I still have a few issues with occasional stress incontinence, but I usually can prepare for it and prevent it. So in that respect, I guess I've achieved total countenance. My PT is the best. She had me doing a regiment of Kegels 2 months prior to surgery, and I've never actually lost control other than a dribble here and there. Nothing that a Shield can't hide.
The ED is a different story altogether. I lost the complete right side of the nerves, but the left side was left intact. Erections still haven't returned, even with cialis. I have heard that the recovery can take up to 18 months, so I guess there is still time for that.
All in all, I'm blessed to have the good health that I possess.
Again, thanks for asking, and I hope you are doing well also. Oh, the PSA is < 0.014, so that's good news also. Take care.

    • @johnhaser642
      @johnhaser642 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@ricknowak4582 Hi Rick. Thanks for reaching out. So a couple of items, I've been continent since day one. I was one of the 1st 24 that my surgeon tried out a "new" technique, although bouncing on a trampoline and sexual activity does cause a little leaking. After my surgery my PSA was 0.7 , so they put me on a testosterone blocking therapy (temporary chemical castration ... NOT FUN) and then did 45 days of Proton therapy. The lack of Testosterone weakens the cancer and then they zapped it with Proton radiation... I would choose Proton therapy over general radiation as there are less side effect. Both the Proton and chemical reeks havoc on sexual function. I was put on injections, as Sildenafil just was not cutting it. Believe it or not it is not nearly as bad as one might think. My nerves are just starting to come back to life! I do have a wonderful wife and we are "having fun". My PSA was 0.0 until about 9 months ago, and now it is creeping up to 0.8. So I get to stay in touch with my Oncologist and Radiologist. I am looking into wholistic forms of treatment while encouraging my Oncologist to "think outside the box." One of the things my Radiologist has encouraged me to do is to "stay fit" , saying, "this cancer does NOT like oxygenated blood." Also a good friend of mine, a retired Marine and coach, put a workout routine for me to do prior to my surgery. I did this for 4 weeks prior to surgery. I have no doubt that this made a BIG difference regarding my recovery. I work out about 3 - 4 times a week. (One of the side effects of blocking testosterone in osteoporosis ... so weight lifting and bouncing help strength the bones and reverse the effects.) And finally, at Easter I was in the Baltimore area and met Dr. Patrick Walsh (a devout Catholic) in church. He is the Surgeon at Johns Hopkins who developed the modern day procedure for nerve sparing surgery so men will stay continent and potent. Really great guy.

Thanks for your videos and sharing your story. I watched all of your stories as I was progressing from my surgery back in January and they were a great aid in my recovery process. I'm 62 now and have been very active training for and competing in Ironman competitions. I was required to take a month off of training post surgery, but eased back into it. I was very fortunate to only have some drips up to maybe six weeks, the last being when straining lifting weights. Erections are slowly building but not firm enough yet without trimix injections. I shied away from Viagra because it tanks my blood pressure for a day or so and I can't exercise. You are a true leader of people. Keep up the good work!

I had the procedure year and half ago at 50, it was a shock. I felt strongly to have prostetectomy as I wanted it out, gone.. it''s gone and lymph nodes were clean after the usual tests... I had not much pain after, was able to do almost normal things like walking and sitting from day 2 although obviously gentle..... the most annoying thing was the catheter and once that was gone later that week i was a lot better. But in week 3 pain kicked in.... till about week 5 or 6, checking with doctor it was normal, but scary first... After that all ok.
Now just over year, psa stays zero so far. I am sharing the similar experience, with leakage, sexual health and stay positive that things improve over time further.
Great videos thanks for sharing and stay healthy! best wishes from Netherlands.

Great videos. Although I chose the radiation/hormone therapy approach, I came very close to choosing the surgery. There is no right or wrong choice...everybody is different. I have only two more radiation sessions to complete the 20 total. My wife wanted me to have the surgery. To quote her, "get that thing out of you". I'll turn 70 in October. From what I've learned and my doctor told me, at the 5 year point, radiation and surgery have equal success rates. I chose radiation because I wanted to avoid the incontinence and catheter issues. Sometimes I start second guessing my decision. My future PSA readings will tell me whether or not I made the right decision. The hormone therapy is unpleasant but manageable. Hot flashes are not fun. Right now, my libido is zero - just like pre-puberty. That should change after the hormone treatments stop. I don't know if the VA provides Viagra. I guess I'll find out.

    • @drummeruss

You are absolutely correct, there is no right or wrong, everybody makes their decision based on available information. I wanted it out, and five years later my PSA is undetectable, and I don’t even think of the fact that I had cancer I hope and pray all goes well for you.

My friend Russ, I continue to watch your videos, they have become such an important part of my healing. It will be one year April 7th and I`m doing fine. Its amazing how our journey down this path has mirrored one another. Because of that I continue to compare the progress we have both made. That in it self would be all the reason a man would need to follow along, but as the body heals the mind sometimes lags a little behind. I truly have been strengthened by your matter of fact courage to let the world know every aspect of your recovery. I have found a large number of men going through the same difficult process. I have told them about your remarkable videos and encouraged them to not be fearful of what they will face. My strength in being honest, direct and to trust God has been a gift from following you. I look forward to any new post you might send out, their value surpasses anything I have tried to educate myself on from all the other sources I have uncovered. You are real, you show how we should be real, there is a honesty about your post that gives hope. As Christian men I think we sometimes wonder what Gods plan for our lives might be, a drummer in a church service would make anybody pleased they are serving the Lord, I know I would be honored to carry that importance, but you have measured up to a much higher calling than even that. All that comes to mind is "well done my good and faithful servant". Its hard to see the impact you have made on someones life in just a moments worth of words, so as I have become a little long here I wanted you to see through 20/20 eyes the impact you have made on this mans life,,,,, I have been blessed, both in watching your recovery and also in seeing Gods work from a humble man. On a more personal note I turned 72 in Feb, I did have to return this last Jan. for triple hernia repair which also has gone very well. My wife and I celebrated our 50th anniversary this Dec and I love her more today than the day we met. She is my workout partner as well as my life coach. She was the best caregiver a man could ask for and has supported me with love through this whole ordeal, again I am a blessed man.. I just wanted to share with you that without good counsel from people like you, there are so many people who you have encouraged and fortified with your truthful approach that stand behind the men going through this procedure. My wife thanks you for everything you have given us, I pray for Gods continued blessing in you and your families life. You are a friend.

I appear to have genital lymphedema, which I haven't found much information about. Everything else was perfect, no pain, just took Tylenol and minimal discomfort from the catheter.
    Thanks for the great videos.

My update: the catheter came out yesterday... I'M HEALED! What a relief! My doctor says the genital swelling will subside in 2-3 weeks and all thelabs show I'm cancer free.

Thank You for these updates. My wife and I ( this is definitely a both-of-us decision) are still researching treatment types for my recent diagnosis and, I'm sure all can relate, it's not at all easy. Just recently started to re-consider prostatectomy and so very much appreciate your post-op perspective. The progress on E.D and incontinence you had gave us hope too. We know life will be different but we still want to have as normal as possible intimate life. Plus, you are similar to me in that you are 155 pounds and an active guy so that gives me hope for my life quality, of running, hiking and so on, if I choose to go the prostatectomy route.
Question: Seems every Doc wants to try and get me on androgen deprivation ( more like depression though) therapy. And, I've refused for a multitude of reasons but, in general, I want quality of life over quantity, ( yes, I'd like both but quality is primary). You mention nothing about this so I was wondering if it was also presented to you as a necessary treatment?
I'd really like the chance to talk with you should that be a possibility. ( I don't do facebook)
    Again, thank you

I'm nine months post Radical Robotic assisted Prostatectomy. 62 now, 170 pounds, very active (Ironman training and competing). I avoided hormone therapy and would do it as a last/later resort. I had very little leakage beyond six weeks. I can't remember the last time I dripped. I remember getting back into the gym one month post surgery to lift weights and feeling urine progressing downward, but that went away too. Sexual function wise, I've used trimix injections. The required dosage has really diminished and erections are starting to come back, but not completely, yet. I saw one doctor say "don't even think about having one naturally before 6 months to 24 months". So I'm hopeful that progress will continue. I have shared with a friend of a friend who is going through the selection process. I know I'm not alone in my status, but don't want to come off as "it's no big deal". I'm very fortunate for the outcome I have had to date and feel folks need to know all the perspectives. Good luck to you!

@@andrewkirk9245 I am facing surgery or radiation in the immediate future for my prostate cancer. I am thinking to avoid hormones until it is the very last option. Hello ,hope all is well.
I'm 46 yrs old, and like you sir , I was also diagnosed with prostate cancer. I i was going crazy, overthinking every thing, that I had done that led me to the place I'm now , the story Is a little longer that. But I'm on the board for somethingelse, to say .
I . been meaning to comment her for th e last 5 months. When after a psa check as part of a physical was 10.4.
I didn't know what it meant. But when the Dr said it could be a few things. Like it being your normal level. A simple uti or a not so simple std, I was like ok ok. I cam deal with that. But then dr said "it could also be cancer. But we need to rule out the simple things , like the possibility of an infection. " so after all those test came back negative, and the next test was a 4 k test. I guess 4k test. Checks for different psa ,and if the cancer is a higher risk ,that's if cancer was found.
But getting to the point, so I'm messaging u because for the last 3 months I been watching ur videos , I had already decided that surgery was the best option, but ur videos gave me a better understanding of what I was getting my self into , they made me feel.so much more comfortable with my choice, it was very clear very simple to watch (no dr lingo) and very informative, I really appreciate the time you took to make these videos , I'm only 2 weeks post op , cath came out a week ago , the side effects are real but so far I'm getting better. I'd say my urinary problem it's at an 70/80% and the sexual thing, well I'm pretty sure it will get better and better.
    Again Thank you sir

@@ricknowak4582 I didn’t start them until 6 weeks out and only did them for a short time. Once I started exercising and doing sit ups and planks I stopped kegels and have never done them again.

Thank you so very much for all your information, I have followed your journey and kind words, your sharing of what has transpired ever since your surgery. On December 08, 2021 I had a biopsy because my doctor detected elevated PSA's in my blood test. For us as a working class Christian family of four it was a sincere surprise, to say the least. I was in complete denial for the first two or 3 days. But after many prayers from others in our church and us at home, it has slowly started to sink in, but my confidence in our Lord and savior has helped. I will be meeting with a Surgeon and Radiation Oncologist January 06, 2022. So my journey has just begun. If you would be so kind to include me and us as a family in your sincere prayers I would be so grateful. Sincerely in Christ... Ed Z. I would like to email you, but I'll leave it up to you and as the Lord leads. Merry Christmas..!
