Khachaturian and Oborin were friends at Moscow Conservatory. Lev was the first to play this Toccata, in 1932. He also premiered Aram's Piano Concerto in 1937, which was dedicated to him.
1:26, magic - Oborin is not just playing the piece or piano, he's playing his audience, creating a mood, a special atmosphere. That's what a performer should strive for! Without it, any super technique is meaningless.
Honestly they look less rapt and adoring than audience members filmed during typical American live tv segments, they kinda just look like they are listening to some music with focus lol
Oborin delivers lessons of high technique and depth, maintaining the fast tempo throughout the piece in an amazing way. The recording unfortunately does not help to better showcase this amazing performance.
I know what you mean, but I kinda liked the way it flowed from start to finish. The middle section is a bit neurotic in the first place, considering the whole rest of the piece.
plb I mean it’s marked “Andante Espressivo.” I know music is all about interpretation, but most of the general consensus of the musical community and I believe there’s a stark contrast between “Allegro marcatissimo” and “Andante espressivo.”
This is so Soviet :D him sitting on a rickety chair instead of a piano stool, the piano being held together by metal bars, its polish destroyed, I suppose the terrible sound quality is actually not a fault of the recording. And on top of that, immensely talented Oborin and a captivating perfect rendition... What more to say. USSR in a nutshell.
You forgot to say that this video is apparently from a kinescope, not video tape. Video tape quality is usually better. I guess there was no video tape in the Soviet Union. Perhaps they didn't want to trample on Ampex's patents.
Very nice for Czerny Etude of velocity!!!! Worst interpretation ever!Awful and unjustified accelerando all the time. Many notes are completely vanished.First of all the piece is not so crazy fast.It is indicated marcatissimo, very rhythmical, stable tempo.Even in the Vivace (which is molto prestissimo here) there are strong accents written in the score. The Andante espressivo is ugly, not expressive at all and very fast again...I think he was in a rush to be ready for the meal...Poor hungry Lev...
For me this is the best interpretation (just the slow andante espressivo section could be slower), I learned the piece because of hearing it. He played it as it was supposed to be, not some overdone kitsch. And add to that this: Mr. Oborin was the first pianist to perform it since he knew Kchachaturian in person.
How could you be so disrespectful to one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century?! Shame on you, and your obviously simple mind. The recordings of Oborin and Flier are as good as they get

For a true musician there is no audience, perhaps one person in, but the music.

I love the way these Soviet films have to show members of the public with adoring, rapt expressions during any performance.

A bit like but not so overdone as with the judges in American idol😂
A melhor interpretação que eu vi dessa música!

Zeitlose Musik , ein unglaublicher Interpret. Und eine grossartige Technik. 🌹
Put at 1/8th speed to hear me play the same piece wow

Beautiful ! Thanks for sharing!
Excellent.
Is it really true that Lev was the first pianist ever to interpret this piece for performance?
Yes apparently so, many years before he played in this video.
No he was not the first person to play this piece for a concert 🤨
He is a good player😃
❤❤❤
He missed the lyricism of the middle section. It was a real blur.

Funny how they don’t show the hands during the octave jumps…🤔

nice
I liked it, but I felt the middle was tooooooooo fast.
I agree.

He plays some parts of the music so fast that you can't hear the effect that the writing creates.
He might be old but damn is he fast. he is even faster than Gyorgi Cziffra.

Great, though a bit fast in the middle and rushing a little
Lev Oborin was a classmate of Khachaturian's, and subsequently the first person both to perform and record the composer's Toccata.
Hmmm he keeps accelerandoizing ??!?!?!?!?! My understanding of this piece was ver rhythmic, no variations
it is still very rhythmic, rhythmic isnt mutually exclusive with strict time keeping. also hes performing, aka impressing people
@@willtowers1532 just to put this out there - a performance should NOT be to impress people, it should be to make art
@@jimthebeet8862 yeah i agree. to me it seems like that's what he's doing though

Surprisingly, Oborin made it past his mid-60' In spite of his obvious obesity.
Suppose the piano did offer some excercise ....

To fast
good technique but I hear wrong notes and a lack of dynamics.
