Making a Four Piece Crossbody Purse with Template

  • Those who know me, know that I've been reluctant to make purses in the past. Mainly because I just don't get them and understand what makes one good or bad functionally. Recently a family friend of ours asked me to overcome my mental block and make one for their daughter - a whip-smart and fun 11-year-old girl. The goal was to make a cross-body purse that would work equally well for a young girl, or more mature woman. This is my take on that style of purse. Once you get going this purse goes together very quickly. You can keep it simple as I have here in this video, or you can modify the design to be more ornate. The one feature I really like here is the shape of the gusset - it has tapered ends. This encourages the purse not to bulge out when open and ensures the flap covers the ends completely. I'd love to see what you create. Send us pics and tag us on Instagram (@odinleather).

This looks great! I like how efficiently you work, too - like lining up pattern pieces so that one cut divides two pieces rather than each pattern piece being separated by space. Cumulatively that wastes so much leather. You've made a beautiful bag and I hope the owner enjoys it for a very long time.

I purchased this kit and it worked very well. I used 7 ounce bridle leather throughout except for pockets and used pigskin for liner. I would suggest attaching rings to gusset once sowed. My issues most likely was due to thickness of leather used for gusset. Otherwise went very well. I put a pocket across back to hide stitch lines for internal pocket. My wife also wanted the pocket. Anyway, it turned out good. One CHRISTmas project completed. It took me some time due to 1st bag and doing saddle stitch. Again, good product from Odin!!!
