David Sanborn was a brilliant sax player and had such a recongisable sound, you knew straight away it was him as soon as he played. Lots of great memories with my watching his chat show every Sunday night on the VH1 channel. Such a sad loss RIP
He even played Woodstock with the Butterfield Blues Band. I used to love his TV show Night Music back in the 80s and 90s. I saw a lot of cool bands for the first time on that.
You can also hear David Sanborn in the first two "Lethal Weapon" films, "Tequila Sunrise" and he appears in "Forget Paris" performing the National Anthem.
Great job Pete. Agree with everything you say. A complete player well respected by all. As you stated, anyone needing a sax player, they called on David.
Thank you for this fine tribute, Pete. A prolific sax player who has left us a great legacy. Have always loved the sound of the alto sax and David Sanborn brought great sounds from that instrument. He will be missed even though we can still enjoy his playing on the solo albums and the plethora of of contributions to albums of artists' album. Thanks, David. R.I.P.
Incredible saxophonist. Monstrous amount of work including Lethal Weapon soundtrack and also an appearance in the movie Forget Paris at the end which will always stay with me. Thanks for the tribute Pete. May you rest in peace David.
Thanks for your great tribute Pete. David Sanborn was a huge presence in rock, pop, funk and jazz in the last half century. You named a ton of his credits and there were still tons more. Voyeur and Double Vision (with Bob James) are my favorites of his. His playing on David Bowie's Young Americans is iconic. He will be missed.
My 1st exposure to Sanborn was as a kid watching him so many times play with Paul Schaefer on the Letterman show. He was my introduction to jazz and I have almost every solo album he ever put out. Imo his work with Bob James is his best.
One of the all time great Sax players. Have so much of his material from various artists including solo material. RIP David, may your spirit soar just like your playing.
😢David played with my good friend Gil Parris on "Like An Old Friend" from Gil's "A Certain Beauty" Album. Rest in peace David Sanborn you will be missed😢
If you want to hear David Sanborn play the opposite of "sweet & silky", listen to his solo on the song " "Initiation" from Todd Rundgren's album of the same name that you mentioned... insane playing !

Wow what an amazing career, RIP
Check out Beck. Joe Beck and Dave Sanborn. Red Eye smokes. Joe’s guitar twinned with Dave’s alto sax just blazes through for 6 and half minutes.
I thought that Sanborn played on Carole King's 1974 song "Jazzman" BUT it is Tom Scott who is playing the sax.
Sanborn was in the original SNL band in 1975.

Some would ask "what's the difference between David Sanborn and Kenny G?" the answer is "Another Hand". Definitely not Smooth Jazz
One is (was) funky, soulful, and virtuosic and the other is kenny G.
