- Yes there are 5 things I don't like about TRIPOD LADDERS. That's not to say I don't like them at all..quite the contrary. I love them. There are a lot of videos highlighting the pros but not much on the negative so I'm about to balance it up. I have a link below and even after these 5 points I would still highly recommend them. I’ve had the 12 footers about 3 years now, don’t know how I ever managed without them but you’ve made some good observations there Lee. I’ll be putting some padding on the top rungs this week after watching this. Nice 1 👍

I practice levitation thus dispensing the need for ladders.This also solves the problem of getting them into the van. The slight problem is that levitation does not work so I never get off the ground. Also I don’t have a van. Hope this helps.

Hi Lee,
Here in The States we have some fairly regulated ladder rules. Rules implemented via OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration) which is a federal oversight admin. Here in California, we also have have CalOSHA which is even more stringent. With that, from my recollection, the only place I know of or have seen 3 legged ladders used here is in agricultural orchard picking. Because as you know, the single leg fits nicely between limbs. Other wise, any 4 legged ladder used must always be fully opened and never leaned against a wall, shrub or anything else. Of course not all people follow that rule but if an inspector happened upon a job and saw such use, there would be as much as a $10,000 USD fine assessed to the contractor on site. This I have witnessed. Just some insight from across the pond.

@@LHLgardenservices It sure is. Although there is a caveat. In 23 plus years of construction work, I've only come across 3 inspectors. But it only takes once to get a huge fine.

They're good for getting right into the hedge. I went with the Henchman hi-step platform ladders in the end (don't know if you've ever tried those), but it really was a toss-up between those and the Henchman tripod ladders.

Hi Lee,agree they are expensive but they will never wear out and I use mine extensively. I put mine on the roof of my transit.
The do have their limitations in tight spaces but overall if you work on your own , they are a very safe way of cutting higher hedges.
By the way, I agree the rings to pull out the adjustment pins are crap. I put a cable tie on mine ( much kinder on the fingers).
Also a set of rubber feet are essential.

Five very valid points; thanks for sharing. Any obstruction whilst using a ladder however small can prove dangerous. You kindly gave me the link where to buy a set of these ladders when I contacted you; I was very serious about buying a set and funds weren't a problem; as you rightly say once bought then they are well worth it.
For your needs gardening where you are constantly working on uneven ground they give great stability and safety; the tripod and splayed legs really come into their own. I live in a detached bungalow on a very steep valley side and when I first saw you use these ladders I was mightily impressed thinking they would be ideal for maintenance around the bungalow exterior but the splay of the legs which give so much stability would prove troublesome for me and of course storage could prove an issue so I decided in the end not to buy. There is one particular problem access area; it's the fascia and gutter right on the roof corner; beneath is the wooden decking which projects just enough to allow tight access with standard step ladders no way could I use a tripod ladder.
However I've now bought a six step electricians fiberglass step ladder (VonHaus) which although more unstable than a tripod ladder I can use; I already had a big set of these electrician's step ladders plus telescopic ladders etc. No ladder covers every job and I came so near to buying one of these tripod ladders.

Hi Lee, I think that most of the ladders and tools, that are reviewed on hear, are actually gifted to people, so we never get honest reviews. I can't afford a set yet, but I will, even though they are not quite perfect, Thank you for your truthful insight, We know you're not moaning (you never ever do) Lol. Keep being you mate, we love it.

Do u recommend getting the tallest in size?
Been looking at these for a while and my biggest decision is 8 or 10ft. Quick question, do traditional ladder clamps work with these? As I will have to put them on a roof rack! As you know I have a Nissan NV200 which is a bit smaller than a VW transporter.

Hi Lee. I've had these ladders for about 2 years now. Wasn't too sure about them to start with but now I love them. 2 things I don't like which you didn't mention are the single leg has nothing to clasp it on - When its carried its a pain so I use a bungee strap. Also no numbers on the leg extensions. I use a 10 ft with is excellent for most hedges but I can extend the legs to give me an extra foot. It would be quicker if I didn't have to count. These are the only niggles for me. They just fit in the back of my Fiat Ducato van.
Good point on numbered holes 😁😁..as for bungeeing the leg i have no problem i just put the chain around the rung and on its hook 👌
They are specifically made for use on uneven ground. Pull the legs out until the ladder is even, not until the legs are the same height
Another great video Lee, I've got one, not with extendable legs but a set standard height 8ft, they make hedge cutting so easy and safe. Only gripe is the cost of them. I get loads of different advice about when to cut back approx or best time to prune various plants, shrubs, trees roses, hedges etc , im never sure who's right, also when and not to put grass seed down . I'd love a basic guide video on this please as I trust your advice.
Cheers Chris....im not the right person to ask about timings sorry as I do things my way 90% of the time and not by the book ...main reason is same as you ...too much conflicting info and confusing I ended up doing what I thought best. Obviously grass seed will not grow if too cold 👍

The first one ever made was by a student for an A level design project. He was at the top of his class.

All valid observations. I can see how the protruding adjuster pin can destabilise one's footing when coming down the ladder! Chilling thought; perhpas its not designed to go up against the wall? Having said that, for the price, the manufacturers should make their ladder adaptable for alternative uses other than just the garden. Hope they take on board your suggestions. It will definitely result in a much better product worthy of its price tag. Well done and thanks for sharing Listentolee.

Anybody any thoughts on a backpack blower... got Husky 525 handheld which I love and use all the time but ban get tiring when doing a lot... plus need a back up to it as it is sick at the minute. Thinking of Makita EB7660 as bit cheaper than Husky an Stihl... anybody have any experience of it?
The price is what caught me up. I wanted one for working around the home because old homes often have uneven floors and standard ladders are notoriously rocky. The really sad part is that the price is the result of all the things the people have voted for and supported over the years. Isn't it amazing how it's cheaper to have these things built halfway around the world and then shipped to a store near you... rather than just making them right down the street? Think about how much industry has been lost just since the 70's, within a lifetime of people still here and trying to tell the story. That's the result of all the taxes and regulations people have foisted onto themselves. Always sold with the idea that it'll stick it to the "greedy capitalists" or whatever. Distraction, pure and simple, but it worked. Folks never thought that it'd drive the prices up for everything. All that environmental stuff, the taxes, the "health and safety" regs, never mind the minimum wage laws, just drives up prices at every turn and makes it impossible for small businesses to survive. Now, even ladders can't be made in the country at an economical price. As the old saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I personally think you pay for what you get. They are the best ladders by far. I used to use decorator steps and now wonder how I managed and they used to bend after 4 months!

What you’re talking about at 5min, with the 3rd leg pin, Henchman has a slightly different design, but it too can have its issues. Also the top area (knee area) is better designed on the henchman. Would never get a Hendon, Henchman has the better design. Best investment I’ve made though!!

The start of the video was a dragged BUT when you go to the point, definitely was worth watching it. You pointed very valid points, all of them in my view are worth to be directed to the makers of this ladders. They Might not able to make this ladders smallest to fit into very narrow, awkward places as you mentioned but those who are in the trade understand you very well. So, yes one thing is a drawing board and another very different is to be on site!. Basically you indicate there's room for improvement, particularly the pins, this should can individually with a short chain. I'll add to the list rubber shoes for those as a standard. Yes, This ladders are Not cheap at all so the above points must be taking into consideration, in my case I'm considering to buy a 12 feet but price number is too step. Anyway, keep the good work. Good honest review. Yes price puts me off and the taper makes it look like not able to positiin right up to top of a dense hedge where nr proximity is required to maximise full reach on a wide hedge top..

You are only pushing the single leg forward through a bush and the wider part can stick out on the lawn edge. I have the 12 ft ladders, never had much of an issue an they solve more problems than they create.
@@landcruiser801 yes, i can see very usefulf or some jobs. I cut some wide leylandii, etc where might be difficult to get close enough. I use platform steps but always slight risk of toppling...
@@yorkshiresnumero2gardener244 I dont see why you cant get close enough, I do a conifer hedge which is about 14 foot high, 6 feet wide...no problem. No toppling issues (even when leaning off the side more than is sensible), rock solid when you set the legs (get the 3 leg option not the one) and you can work on all sorts of wonky stuff. I have roof bars on van with a roller at the back so dead easy to get on as they are also very light, especially for the size. Of all the things I have bought for my business, these are in the top 3

To avoid a pull ring from getting snagged I put high viz duck tape on it so it is a disk now and not a ring.

i found these to be abit awkward to use when using a long reach if you only half way up the ladder as you have the long reach between you and the ladder

Seems you don't have them set up right. Make sure they are set level and the pitch is at the right angle. I have the 10 foot and I go to the top step and can lean into them. No wobble just good confidence 👌
@@daveevans5368 Ehhh? The top step is 2 steps down.. where Lee has them foams knee savers... it is the larger platform step and the ladders have a massif sticker on the saying do not stand above this level. So in what way are they set up wrong?
The padding is a great idea. My shins are murder after using them.

You wouldn’t have points 3 and 4 in this video if you’d have bought a Henchman branded tripod ladder. They don’t have pin sticking backwards for the rear leg and they have a platform at the top.
