Democrats Have a Better Option Than Biden

  • Biden is faltering and Democrats have no plan B. There is another path to winning in 2024 - and I think they should take it. But it would require them to embrace an old-fashioned approach to winning a campaign.

5% of Americans over 80 work, a number which only decreasea over time as this group dies or succumbs to physical and cognitive decline. None of us can predict the future, but if 95% of his peers aren't working, how can a man at 82 years old on inauguration day 2025, 86 years old at the end of a second term, realistically fulfill the obligations of an executive. Aging in reverse, sadly for Biden, is not an option. Continued decline, however, is an inevitability.
Rather than dwelling on the shortcomings of a campaign, let's focus on the current reality. The man is on borrowed time, among a generation of men who more often than not do not even live to reach his current age, much less work full-time, much less in the most powerful position in the world.
To expect Biden to not only live, but excel at a position which exacts a disproportionate toll on the human body, is downright delusional. This isn't ageism, its realism. His insistence upon running is no longer about the country, as it could easily have been portrayed in 2016, rather its hubris borne from a political feud that has become deeply personal (Biden himself has declared that he "wouldn't be running" if Trump weren't).
Thank you for another thoughtful political take, Ezra Klein show

The New York Times is an INSTITUTION that HARDLY ever goes straight up or down in quality or objectivity. It is a very well connected, well funded, well researched LIBERAL leaning institution (like MOST of the world's most competitive research institutions and teaching schools) that hires a variety of trench journalists, opinion writers, video/pop culture opinion personalities, liberal and conservative editors, etc.
ONE LIBERAL or ONE CONSERVATIVE doing a piece or a video on X, Y, or Z topic or individual or event.... IS NOT ENOUGH to drop the NY Times quality of objectivity.
But if your BS is that it really "has dropped in quality and objectivity," then you MUST put that observation in a meaningful CONTEXT: doing a long piece of writing or video on how much better it was, in and of itself, 10 or 30 or 80 years ago.... or how MUCH BETTER another newspaper is.
Tell us the METRICS you are measuring these "quality" and "objectivity" points on.
Don't just say mindless BS like "that's WOKE." WTF does that mean? I've lived in the US for 45 years; I don't have any clue as to what "woke" mean; and I am more than sure ZERO of its user knows what such an idiotic work means, either... beyond a-5-second-3rd-grade, emoji seeking blurt.

At times, ME/CFS may confine them to bed. People with ME/CFS have severe fatigue and sleep problems. ME/CFS may get worse after people with the illness try to do as much as they want or need to do. I noticed the beginning stage of dementia in Biden during elections. Wish others did so we didn't have to live through 3 years of destruction of this country. Bad enough he stopped the pipeline on day one...heaven forbid we can be a self sustaining country. Now with the invasion at our border, we are wasting our hard earned pay/social security on the invading pillaged, rapists, murderers, drug cartels and human traffickers. America is turning into a 3rd world country.
How can any parent allow Biden to sniff their children...disgusting!
Biden is now mumbling, bumbling and talking about dead people that he thinks are in the room. Says he met so and so after they died.
Took papers that he shouldn't have while VP.
We can go on and on about his perverted son and their shady dealings with Ukraine.
His wife shamefully is basically committing elder abuse...that or she's getting dementia.
We have never been in such a mess. People working 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet. Prices of food are outrageous and gasoline is still ridiculous...people can barely afford cars, but buying gas is tough for them, but they must go to their jobs.
      FJB, as people say!!!
All the destruction allowed by democrats rioting, but no one else can peacefully protest. See anything wrong here?
Glad I'm old, because I'm so sad and upset with the terrible Democrats and their, two tier laws...they can get away with abhorrent crimes, but the regular folk can't. Just too many bad things to list.
BIDEN MUST GO! If he won't be tried for things he did illegally because he's forgetful and old, he can't run a country...not that he did, except run it into the ground!

The greatest virtue of any leader is knowing when to step aside. Unlike Trump, Biden doesn't strike me as a man driven by ego, nor will he abandon the country to Trump out of personal pride. I'm sure he recognizes the necessity of shaking up the race and doing it at the convention makes the most sense. Biden is a wise leader, like him we must trust America and trust the process of democracy, albeit often unpredictable and messy at times. What is entirely predictable now, Trump will win and torch everything in his path. That outcome is simply unacceptable.

Stepping aside at the convention would be a disaster. The progressive left will not vote for any moderate democrat chosen by the party without a primary. Progressives are rightly freaked out about Trump, they'd sooner vote for Joe Lieberman than allow that to happen. The gravamen of your piece was clearly is a matter of fact and not just opinion.
It is an issue that you have disambiguated like 1 move out of many on a chess board at a critical juncture of a game and that needs to be executed or else ventures shall fall to ruin. I believe that all you are saying is this: if you think that the lifeblood of democracy is about to die a painful death at the alter of a general election, then by God, put your best foot forward. Sacrifice the 'queen' to gain the advantage. Engineer a possible victory by choosing or coronating a youthful leader that people can coalesce around. Whatever needs to be done, make sure you make the right choice, make the hard choice or make the strategic choice and if nothing else, it might be a very good time to show them a new lesson: like Washington who need not have left after his second term, for goodness sake "teach them how to say goodbye" because these are the times that try men's souls.

Her fans believe it’s too late to change candidates, but none (that I’ve seen) have addressed how Biden can simply transfer delegates at the DNC Convention. They ignore this point when I make it in comments on other platforms.

    • @einnAnnie
      @einnAnnie 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

How exactly is Trump "a threat"? And a threat to what, or whom? Democrats always say he's a threat to "democracy", but what does that even mean? Democrats are the one cancelling primaries and declaring Biden the winner, removing names from the ballot to prevent people from voting for the candidate of their choice, and diluting the vote of American citizens by allowing noncitizens to vote in municipal elections, refusing to clean their voter rolls or implement voter ID requirements, despite the vast majority of people, including minorities, being in support of it, regardless of party affiliation. Democrats are the ones working with Big Tech to censor dissent online. From people declaring support for Palestine, to questioning the safety and efficacy of the C19 vaccine or sharing the injuries caused by it, to expressing widespread concern over election integrity or possible ways to alleviate it, it's the Democrats who are subverting democracy. Did you know that Google, in coordination with Congressional Democrats, consistently pushes websites that contain conservative content, whether it be news articles, blogs, or whatever, down its list of search results, even when searching for the title of the page or article, verbatim? Gmail sends conservative candidates' fundraising emails to the spam folder at the end of every month, and the closer it gets to the election, when most donations are received? Is this the "democracy" you believe Trump threatens? If so, then I guess you're right.

I came to listen to this because some people who themselves annoy me were super annoyed with you over this.
At the outset, I was thinking, my God, those critics are once again being absurd. And then as you went on... omg, what the heck are you thinking?
You are correct in noting the distinct difference between an ability to run for president and an ability to serve as president. But when judging Joe Biden's ability to run, you have to evaluate that in comparison to the alternatives.
Kamala Harris might well make a very good president. (I believe she would be excellent.) But the betting odds against her winning the general election would be very, very long indeed (unless Trump is finally brought down by one of his criminal trials, in which case Biden would have won anyway). The problem is only partly with Harris as a campaigner. Rather, when she was chosen for VP, in such a public manner, on the basis of being a Black woman, she was severely wounded as a national candidate. The idea that a successful minority member got there specifically because of their minority status is precisely the smear that the far right always tars minority members (like Obama) with. It's insulting! The Dems did this, OFFICIALLY, to Kamala Harris, and it was a terribly short-sighted.
We have other Democrats who might do well as president, too. But they would almost certainly suffer fatal trickle down damage as candidates. Can you imagine the bloodbath within the Democratic party if the party were to pass over the Black woman for a more electable candidate? When all was said and done, that latter candidate would no longer be more electable, with plenty of potential for long term scarring among the subgroups. Nominate the Black man, and the effect on women would be palpable. Nominate the white woman... well, you get the idea.
Democrats take it as an article of faith that there is no downside to affirmative action, thus key constituencies could never admit that "We are only replacing Harris because she was, in effect, labeled an affirmative action candidate" and a significant number of people outside the MAGA right interpret that as not being here on merit . Especially when, in truth, she was highly qualified.
Meanwhile, you measure ability to campaign in terms if energy on the stump. This is understandable, especially for a member of the press, who, after all, has every reason to perceive the entertainment/eyeball grabbing/pseudo-sporting contest aspect of political contests. But here's the thing. Donald Trump cannot be beaten in the entertainment arena. Like Kennedy and especially Reagan, he is made for entertaining, and he possesses outstanding skill and instincts when it comes to grabbing and controlling attention.
However, that also negates most of what you are saying. You and much of blue America is dying over this report, this Mexico gaffe, whatever. But what does Trump do? He grabs the nation's attention by calling for Russia to attack a NATO ally.
It's only February, and the things that will decide the election have not yet happened. But you can be certain that the things that do decide the election will happen under the spotlight that Trump creates, for better or worse. Last time, it seemed as though it was the pandemic requiring Biden to lay low. This time it will be the fact he is out there doing his job, fixing problems, offering sane solutions that Trump can blow up in big public ways.
"Let's solve the border crisis and stand by commitments to the Ukraine." "Absolutely not. I and some lunatic fringe want utter chaos."
Of course, even that might not get noticed when he's in criminal court.
About the only thing that can undo this strategy is if blue and purple America, out of boredom or a sense of fairness, find excuses to dwell on Biden's age. Even while they admit that the man is still fit for the job. You are correct that people are not worried about Biden's age because the media tells them to be; but blue and purple America is more worried about Biden's age than Trump's because the media tells them to be. Otherwise, this would shape up as the old man who mixes up his words against crazy criminal old man who mixes up his words.
PS: As to whether the idea of going after the apolitical isn't working. C'mon! You and I and the people posting here can hardly conceive of this, but much of America -- the apolitical by definition -- will not reconsider, or even consider for many months now. Yeah, that's tough on our nerves, and it's tough on media that needs eyeballs, but that's the truth.
PSS: And you drop from "misguided" to "beyond ridiculous" when you claim that a candidate chosen by the convention would be seen as evidence that Democrats listen to the voters. What are you even thinking? This would (rightfully) be seen as a way to evade nasty debates and primaries where ordinary voters got to express themselves at the polls. This would please political junkies and the media, and it would make for great drama. But they would get pilloried for it.

The Democrats did not want her as a president but she became Biden's running mate. Her performances on the world stage have been awful. You might need to go back and watch her press conference with the Polish Prime Minister last year. She was and is clueless regarding the border fiasco that is causing a nightmare for the US. She is patronising and unable to listen. As the world descends into further chaos with a war in Europe and conflict in the Middle East, Iran on the rise, Russia allying with North Korea ... can you honestly say that Kamala can handle all that?

    • @stephenbonaduce7852
      @stephenbonaduce7852 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Don, to your last point, absolutely!
An open convention after the voters have already spoken would be a bloodbath. Democrats would take the hit up and down the ticket, and we'd have a repeat of 2017, where the Republicans held all three branches of government.
Except this time, they will never let go.

The biggest reason that Bidens numbers are so low, is that the American people - for the most part - have no idea what he is accomplishing. I blame the lazy, often dysfunctional, "copy and paste" press people, who are constantly bleating about how old and unpopular he is. Sorry to say, that even though I agree with much of what you are saying - you are just one more journalist piling on again.
