  • Price, comfort and features the 2019 HOG Pro Hybrid BCD has been called one of the best Buoyancy Control Devices of the year:
    edge-gear.com/index.php/produc...
This Hybrid BCD gives the diver the best of both a Jacket style BCD and a Back Inflate BCD.
Using a specially designed bladder the "Pro" Buoyancy control device helps position the scuba diver in the best Neutral buoyancy position for diving.
On the surface the diver floats comfortably in a nice head up position without having to lay back at a strange angle.
This is especially important if you are an Instructor or a DiveMaster working with student divers.
Plus the "Pro" by Edge Hog Dive Gear is priced far below other BCD on the market that may offer similar benefits.

I'm torn between the pro hybrid and the HOG TBCS, I want a bcd that can be used for any type of recreational diving, be taken everywhere in the world and can be used in warm and cold water. Which is better?

Standish, thanks for your comment. This is a question I routinely get. Best answer is the TBCS can be customized for an individual’s style of diving.
Back plates vary from soft, aluminum or stainless steel. Weight pockets, tank straps and Wing lift capacity are all optional choices. The Main bladder difference is the TBCS is a Back-Inflate vs the Hybrid style of the Hog PRO.
The PRO with its Hybrid buoyancy Control has 10 weight pockets with 3lb Trim pockets, light weight is great for travel and Optional add-on storage/utility pockets make it a real winner.
Hopefully this info helps, if you’d like to better describe your style of diving and how you’ll use your unit shoot me an e-mail to

New diver (13dives, all tropical.) First time BCD buyer. Have been diving a borrowed ScubaPro Hydros. Looking at the Hybrid Pro and the Total Buoyancy Control System backplate and wing. Doesn’t look like I can go wrong with either one. Hybrid Pro looks more like what I’m familiar with; everyone who has dived for a while recommends backplates and wings. Experience/Thoughts on pros and cons between these Edge - HOG systems?

These are excellent thoughts. I discuss these same considerations on BP/W vs what we now must call “others” because Hybrids BCs are just truly entering the main stream.
For Instructors and teaching assistants the reality of how much time is spend on the surface teaching and discussing skills with students, especially Rescues, that if these folks are truthful, then BCD type ca be a factor. Hybrids win.
Having dove almost everything from just a harness beginning in 1970 to the current Hydros myself as well as the Hog units so I’ll see if I can reply objectively. As an Instructor Trainer working with many Instructors the choice of student BCs hands down are Jacket Style.
The Hydros is an interesting BC with its unique blend of construction materials. I used less weight because of that +, the jury is out on having to buy connection points -, I like the right should dump on any unit ++ but the back-plate can be uncomfortable at times and the harness squeaks... strange or a BC. The biggest issue is the cost but if that’s not an issue for you.. cool.
The HOG TBCS is very flexible so it can conform to various diving environments where others are limited and it is very affordable compared to other units. No right shoulder dump - ...but a left shoulder dump can be included +.
The HOG PRO HYBRID is the most cost effective of these and is a great all around diver.
Win Win in my book !

DiversSupply - thanks for the insight. I have been leaning towards the TBCS package, but am pretty evenly split now between the two. Afraid the only way to resolve this is a trip to closest store to touch, feel, try on.

@@rohgren The TBCS does give you the ability to design the system to fit you and more specifically your type of diving.
Travel= Soft backplate and small weight pockets plastic cam straps mean easy packing.
Spearfishing or Drysuit = Steel backplate with Pad and large pockets etc.
It's always great to get hands-on and I know at our Jax store there are "normally" HOG Demo units available and a great pool.
