Plasma cutter circle cutter, quick and dirty

- Quickly made from parts in my garage this circle cutter works a treat.
I had 40 discs to make so it was worthwhile making up this tool.

theres nothing cheap about geared motors, and adjustable power controllers. Great idea though.
Fabulous! I spent much of Friday, till it was too dark to see cutting 1/4 inch plate by old School tech & then filing. Just amazing how far machining has come both in technology & cost. Kind of wonder what Brunel, Whitworth et al would have done with modern tools & yet many find endless things to complain about.
I never even heard of plasma cutters until a little while ago. I ended up buying an everlast plasma cutter and now I don't know what I'd do without it.
Who knows what Myford gonna build now with his new nifty cutting machine, can't wait for him to put out a new video making something outta his new machine, Awesome job Myford :)

This is just fantastic! - Well done David, Your new plasma cutter and cutting jig works really well and it cuts through the 4mm mild steel plate like a hot knife through butter - saving you hours of work and effort if you were to use a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade.

perfect! I build a circle for my cutter witch is a easy solution but only for bigger disks. Always amazing how perfect the cut culd be, if it's not freehand!
+66Gollum If a lot of straight cuts were needed it would be quite easy to make a guide driven by a threaded rod with a motor on the end.

This is a great source for ideas on how to make circles, affordable to just about anyone with limited resources.
Just one detail, your would get better cutting kerf if you make the torch straight or slightly angled towards the direction of cutting.

I got to try my friends everlast powerplasma cutter and I completely agree. Once you have used one you really can't help but want one for yourself. Highly addicting.

Dear MB, (D) as ever a top video. Brilliant work and very encouraging to us (me) amateurs 8). ps was wondering if you were going to fry up on the cut metal...
Looking at your brilliant circle cutter idea, i had a flash of inspiration. in the event you need a disc with no hole, you could put a flat head with a live center for down pressure and achieve the same awesome results. You could also make a magnet base for steel, no clamp required. However the magnet would get weaker with each exposure to heat, but Harbor freight has the 2 packs of the round magnets for super cheap, and they work well. Just drill the hanger clip out of the center and you have a mounting hole. Just a thought to expand the functionality of a really great idea.
A magnet would work OK and also your other suggestion. No Harbour Freight here in the UK!

If we want to produce the traction engine you've just added another required item to the shopping list, a plasma cutter. Along with a foundry and the usual workshop this is getting expensive. Buying the kit seems the only viable option. But fun to watch! Regards.
+Peter Gregory I bough the cutter so you don't have to. I can sell the gears at less cost than you can pay for the cutters to make your own.

+🔥Ramsey Customs - turbocobra I have a nicer motor than the one used with an electronic speed control and nice gearbox. I used this first. It could be reduced in speed to what i needed but as soon as the torch was fired up the motor ran at full speed. Somehow the electronics in the plasma cutter interfered with the motor controller.

If you can get DC motors with brushes and a variable power supply it would be the best way to make the speed smoothly variable... ;)

How would you rate your plasma cutter? I've considered purchasing the same model for some time.
+D I think it's great value. I am pleased with the tool. I have cut 1/2" steel, not tried anything bigger. It cuts the sheet great and the finish is good.
The circles are very neat. the secret to a neat cut is constant speed. Like when you are turning something in a lathe, it takes a bit of practice to be able to get a constant feed.
You need a compressor of course and for full power it won't run off a 13 amp socket as the input is about 20 amps.

On those straight cuts, are you dragging the tip along the guide or the material? I just got my plasma cutter and I thought you had to hold the tip up so it's not electrically contacting the material.
It's fine to drag the tip on the material. Once the cut starts you can move it away a few mm but it's not necessary.

John Ridley some machines come with a drag tip. My Hobart is not one of them and it goes through electrodes and tips way faster if you drag it. Check your manual.
Is it also possible to use a magnet instead of drilling a hole in the middle? Great video!
I did try that. The heat is not good for the magnet and not as firm. A better magnet may be OK.
Alternatively you could drill a piece of bar stock with the plasma head diameter on one end and the center post diameter on the other, and manually cut a circle. Similar in concept to how you'd draw a circle with a compass.
+Jeremy Keller I tried this first but I found it difficult to move the torch at an even speed on a small diameter like this.

+myfordboy your way will definitely make a cleaner cut! Also, ive used Masonite templates for all sorts of shapes, just need to factor in the offset between the plasma and the edge of the torch tip. The Masonite can be used for several pieces before getting too burned up. Thanks for sharing your inventions!

What is the motor from - I would guess it's a windshield wiper motor but looks
really skookum (Canadian word for robust lol). What type of vehicle would it be from?
Also, as I was watching I had an idea that the threaded rod could be replace with
a high power magnet.

+Newmachinist The motor is a mains AC ( 240 volt) motor but as it is series wound it works also on DC . I tried a magnet first but when cutting smaller discs the heat from the torch shattered the magnet.

How many Amps and how psi using for plasma, and metal thickness
You need a 15amp supply. This model will cut 12mm steel. You need a high volume of air mine is 14 CFM.
What you recommend how many amps are good enough for cutting 12mm gauge of sheet metal ?? SIR GEE
This machine is rated at 12mm max cut so full power would be suggested.

Small side to side movement from right to left and you won´t get the starting notch to the starting position.
What's your thoughts on this machine and what thickness would you cut up to?

I have tried it on 12mm and it cuts fine. For £140 including delivery i think it's excellent value.
+myfordboy I was looking at them myself and thought they were good value! I'm sure you'd get your money's worth before they'd give up the ghost
On occasion, you may have to watch out in case the steel has enough carbon in it to get hardened by the heat, especially when cutting unknown scrap bits. Last time I welded that near to my "workmate" it got burnt to a cinder!!!
+Roger Crier I set fire to my workmate once when soldering a large boiler, do I stop and put out the fire or let it burn and not spoil the boiler. You will see my workmate now has new unoriginal jaws.

TableWolfMusic it's not galvanised it's painted steel but the torch does not heat it up so no problem.

+mtktm Yes you can cut all metals with it.
+Mentorcase You can even cut wood, glass, plastics and etc. if you place a metal sheet on top. Will need to experiment to get good results. Heat glass first or it will crack, wood scorches and plastic melts if too slow. Doesn't work real well for everything but sure is fun to try.

You need to aim the plasma in the direction you are cutting not dragging like your first cut.
Just think. If you made your setup into a pantograph, you could have cut the teeth for the gears too!

This method doesnt seem quick, or dirty, does leave a clean cut though.
