    I fell in love with Jeweled Lacertas on Clint's Reptiles. I'm pleased that there's a good breeder like you relatively near me.

    I love how you specify the ethical differences between husbandry between pet keepers vs breeders.
    Arguments get started over what that "standards" should be all the way around.

      Thank you! I think it’s an important distinction and a conversation worth having. I spend a lot of time thinking about it and trying to be the best breeder I can be. :)

    I’m really happy to learn about this beautiful species! I was introduced to the lizard world when I rescued a baby green iguana - but unfortunately they’re not allowed here in Palm Beach Florida… so I’m really stoked to find out if you have any blue male babies available because I really love to get into this specific breed… thanks so much for sharing your experience and advice and have a wonderful day 😊

    Jewelled Lacerta/European Eyed Lizard or Timon lepidus, formerly Lacerta lepida (Lacera simply means lizard in Latin) come from Spain and Portugal which has pretty much the same climate as California, i.e Mediterranean climate, when you want to compare it to the USA.
    That means very hot and dry summers often 40C or more at day time, and cool wet winters, rarely frost (although it happens sometimes). What temperatures do you brumate them in? More info on that please!
    There is one guy I know in the UK who keeps them outdoor all year round, in a greenhouse actually as our British summers are rather cool and damp, winters are sort of similiar to Mediterranean, I.e. cool but not freezing and wet. Much linger though

    • @LivingArtbyFrankPayne
      @LivingArtbyFrankPayne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct. :). I have brumation temps and set up in the video. I will talk about it a bit more in the future when I do a breeding video for this species.

    • @LivingArtbyFrankPayne
      @LivingArtbyFrankPayne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ive heard that they are fairly particular about humidity. Do you mist the enclosure? Or does the humid hide serve their humidity needs?

    • @LivingArtbyFrankPayne
      @LivingArtbyFrankPayne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They aren't particular about humidity at all. In fact they do better when it's on the dry side. Having the humid hide will give them what they need for shedding and staying cool as needed. I do occasionally mist the enclosure down heavily to simulate a rain but it's not a frequent thing.

    • @LivingArtbyFrankPayne
      @LivingArtbyFrankPayne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two or three times a week for adults. I usually hibernate them from beginning of October to Beginning or end of January.

  • @erikm8372
    @erikm8372 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know you said to remember that you’re a breeder, and not a keeper, and have to make some sacrifices as far as tank size, but really… what you do, regardless, is lightyears ahead of most! The fact you actually think of the animals’ space utilization, plants, enrichment, etc. shows that. And your enclosures are far from inadequate.

      @@LivingArtbyFrankPayne my male shows som cloudiness on his left eye when I saw him after some time in brumation mode. But it can also be a trauma to the eye after he ate a dubia in his underground cave and shaked his head in the side of the cave. Just the middle over the black pupil that has a slight bluish tint. Consulted with my rep vet and he said that this is normal and should clear up on it's own when he get out of brumation and his immune system is strong again. Will keep an eye on it.

    So I’m thinking about getting a jeweled lacerta and would prefer a male, would getting one old enough to be gendered make it significantly harder to build trust than a baby?

    • @LivingArtbyFrankPayne
      @LivingArtbyFrankPayne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would probably be harder with an older animal. I would recommend a baby.
