I 2nd that, argon purge is the safest way I’ve done it many times. You can check the purge with an oxygen meter or if you can’t get one use a lighter by the vent. If you can’t light the lighter from a few inches away your purged. If you don’t know how to properly setup a purge you probably shouldn’t be attempting this anyway. 👍🏻

PURGE THE TANK ! I cringed when you took the torch to that without purging. You have to eliminate the air in the tank to prevent explosion. By not even mentioning purging the tank you are showing people they should weld tanks in a very unsafe way.

Old school rule for welding fuel tanks is soap and water rinse the tank 20 times then... fill the tank full of water so there is no air pocket. If in doubt, rinse the tank 30 times. You can laugh if you want but this rule was taught to me in 1982 by my welding instructor.

You don't need to fill the gas tank with water and soap and 20 time rinse. Just empty it as much as you can to another container and with all filler and breathing and fuel pump holes open, put it outside for couple of days, when inside completely dry you can weld it. If nothing inside how can explode ? Only Air can explode?

I've been welding for almost 3 years, I've done a couple fuel tanks and one fuel/hydraulic tank and it's best to purge with argon. After you are done welding it up you can close the cap and plug some of the holes with fittings if you have them or stuff a wet rag in there and stick a air hole in there with a air gun on the end with a wet rag wrapped around it. Put some soapy water in a spray bottle and pump some air in the tank and spray the weld with the soapy water and look for bubbles, maybe get someone to help you look for bubbles if you are at the other end. Hope this helps 👍👍

Welding aluminum diesel tanks is totally safe as long you pressure wash with hot water until the tank is hot to the touch have personally welded over 100 of them straps all the way around, bungs, baffles, and end caps. Make sure to leave every port open possible and no worries. Welding in a hog composter putting in AR liners is way worse or welding in a cheese pasteurizer tank where a torch won't even light because to little oxygen is way worse. That's my experience

Three ingredients for fire= heat fuel and air (oxygen) . No air, no fire! If the tank is FULL of fuel , there's no air ! If the tank is half full of fuel, the other half of the space inside has air. That's where the danger is. If the tank has no fuel, there's air= DANGEROUS! To fill the tank with water first is probably the best safety precaution to use when welding a fuel tank

For those that have NOT done a trade in welding please note the following:- This video refers only to Diesel Tanks; Petrol/Gas tanks present a different and much more dangerous problem, if there are any folds in a tank, ie. the ends are turned around and the outside edges welded, fuel can accumulate in the folds and even after years of being empty when the folded seam is welded the liquid secretes out and mixes with the Air/21% oxygen and can/has caused fatal consequences. After thoroughly washing the tank it is recommended that Co2 be used to flush out and replace the air in the container keeping a flow of Co2 the whole time till all welding is finished, ('This also applies to any cutting of a tank because the tools motor brushes and/or grinding/impacting can cause a spark'), the use of Co2 does not replace thorough washing as described in this video; Note! even after thorough washing and then 'filling' with water in a petrol/gas tank, this will not guarantee your safety, only a Qualified Tradesman should undertake this kind of work, because we have seen all of the videos showing the gory end results when people have not followed instructions to the letter with this kind of welding. I know its a video about a diesel tank but some clown will watch this and wont recognise the differences and end their life.

Great video and can tell what your saying comes from knowledge and experience, 100% agree any type of fuel tank is dangerous to weld/work on and prep n saftey is biggest thing.
As a novice i have done tanks i shouldn't but then again i play with homemade rocket propulsion and few other things i shouldn't so i get how the invisible/unknown is most dangerous.... I like to say consider the fuel in the tank like a bag a flour its safer when its liquid/soild form but as a vapour its highly explosive.
    So don't be stupid

I patched a gas tank with soap to stop that leak then got everything as spotless as I could and put some sealer on that keeping it to a minimum and once I was sure no gas could come through made a patch that looked some what better over all and then when no leaks, removed the gas that will solid up while there is gas it holds but gas gets below hole and the soap falls out. I was counting on marine tec goober to hold fair.. I filled tank with exhaust pipe running in it and gas weld (braze) this tank as it was on the rig and just about no way to save if pulled. It was hoaky way but most I would chance.. I just don't like gasoline. The bigger patch covered a lot of real estate but it also covered the ugly I didn't want to claim as I was just buying insurance and it was also all I had to work with, could I got it to shop my way would kinda mirror yours and no goober either... even a damn poor explanation but I ain't feeling so sharp Steve

Prep is the BIGGEST thing and most important, clean clean clean for all disciplines of welding is key, and yeah you gotta do the test runs and set up runs on alloys, magnesium likes to catch on fire if heated to much when welding it, that happens and you are screwed royally with no way to extinguish it once it starts,, Fun stuff!!!

I never was a great welder I fucked with it in school and outside of school on a farm I worked on growing upand the guy had two sons that were doing their own thing and he got where his eyesight wasn't the best and he would have a guy come out and weld his equipment I said let me give it a shot man I saved him quite a bit of money and it was always fun I got my eyes burnt real bad one time it seems like when the sun went down it was the worst The mask I was using wasn't strong enough I'll never forget that bro that's for sure 💯🇺🇸👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻

I'm industrial maintenance guy now. Started out in chassis shop tig welding all types cages.
Hanging upside down with another guy working the pedal is interesting to an watch.
Now I weld most anything on a machine combo of stick, mig, and tig.
I have welded fuel tanks but usually after they are cleaned an air out for couple days depending on weather an vapor condition.
I have welded on 5000 gallon air tank. Was sacred to death whole time on that one just running scenarios of where I would land if something went off.
We drained an had nitrogen blowing into tank while welding but always a what if in your mind.
An this was all done upside down 40ft up inside of a stamping press.
Love welding an fab work but dont get to do near as much as I used to.
That's why I love thsi channel for diversity of the projects an work.

still a green horn not even a year into my field experience, but the craziest thing I've had to weld was a rack in a shipping container to hold a compressor, the whole shipping container was filled with 55 gallon drums of hydraulic oil, diesel and fuel and spilt flammables. was super sketchy but I used a blanket and tried to cover the drums as best as I could lol

I have been told to fill it with water when you are welding one is that even possible or smart because it seems like it would be much more difficult and could lead to bad weld's what is your opinion on this whole concept?

One time we were out off road and punched a hole in the oil pan. It was thin steel and very oily. We cleaned it up as best we could and used brake cleaner. We thought we had dried it out pretty good but there was still fumes in there. When we lit off, the fumes lit off and it spit a ball of fire out. Now we knew it was dried out! Ended up welding it shut and everything was good.

Im not certified to do anything but there's pics of me welding before I turned 10 lol... I grew up in an old school trucking family, and in a truck shop....we have welded these for years. After I wash it down with acetone, then I purge the tank with a hose hooked to my pickup truck exhaust for 45 min....then I weld it up leaving hose in and pickup running...o% oxygen in tank, that means zero percent chance of explosions....trust me on this, it'll save your life!!!

I've welded up quite a few for the military..... I would grab a Humvee and hose in the exhaust for about 39 mins.... Then weld it up....never had problems...

    Many years ago
I’m talking 1999 or 2000 I had a Fiat X1/9 and the fuel tank was leaking from the seam
so anyway long story short it was successfully welded but in order to do so the petrol tank was removed and completely drained and washed with degreaser and water and dried with compressed air
didn’t matter how much you washed it you could still always smell fuel
and just prior to starting to weld I you put about 5 kilos of dry ice pellets into the tank....!!!! On the advice of someone who had done it before themselves
we had no problems at all
    the job was successful
expensive to pay someone but as a DIYer the only cost really use the dry ice and my time
I wouldn’t want to pay a welder to do that
On the other hand it would be pretty expensive to find a 1972 Fiat fuel tank even in the year 2000.... and even if you did it would be secondhand and it would have its own problems and require welding in a different spot....!!
But if you’re stuck I’m sure it wouldn’t matter if it was diesel or petrol dry ice puts a dampener on any explosions

Hot taps on live gas lines at the refinery, or
Maybe Magnetic Steel on army tanks. I’m a union pipe fitter. Now couldn’t you just put a heavy nitrogen purge on a fuel tank so there is no Oxygen to burn

I repair, shorten and lengthen diesel tanks all the time. Never had and issue. I use brake cleaner to prep. Brake cleaner dissolves fuel and evaporates. I once modified 20+ 500 gallon propane tanks. I purged them with c02 before cutting.

  • @magnum357225

Just fill it with water, i dont see whats the problem, i welded atleast 50-60 of fuel tanks, SS, aluminium even galvanised (which is the worst because of fumes) and never had any problems.

  • @utube012341
    @utube012341 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I wash tanks out then slowly displace the air with c02 .
Co2 is 1.5 times heavier so I have anything like a balance port on the bottom taped closed then the tank slowly forcing the air out ,replace to cap and weld it up .
Diesel is the dangerous one because of the wax that when hot turns into a ignitable gas , boom .
Gasoline tanks are pretty easy because after you drain and clean them there isn’t any wax to smoke and ignite .
Crazy thing was stick welding inside of a pump standing on the prop with water dripping all over me .
Yeah I got shocked a bit but got it fixed

I've welded 30+ deisel tanks, all have had fuel. Deisel does not explode, it is not volatile like gasoline. It burns like peanut oil, I've welded on the tanks half empty. Deisel needs extremely high pressure and heat to actually burn. Just stay away from volatile fuel tanks, those explode and kill

Yep ive done countless gas and diesel tanks over the years . Drain and flush with hot soapy water and then get a hose and run a car or trucks exhaust into it for 30 minutes or so . Done,,,,, ALso , I never fix a crack like that.... Hey its your thing and its worked for you but I always do a patch thats larger then the area . Helps cut down on the contamination and its 1 and done.....

Used to weld alloy fuel tanks off trucks a fair bit, if you fill them to overflowing with water it pushes out all the vapor, you can then drain, burn out all the crud with a gas torch then weld em up with out leaving worry marks in your undies,
