It all depends on whose list you're reading. Technically he didn't really pioneer any of the techniques he uses, like Victor Wooten with the double thump. But he definitely deserves credit for getting the slap/pop/flamenco strumming combo into heavy music. Jaco didn't invent harmonics but he put them on the map, so in my books they're in the same league

Not that I disagree that Les deserves the honour, but you really aren't giving the other guys the credit they deserve. Like I said, Jaco didn't invent harmonics. But the way he used them established a sound that was truly his own. Listen to, "A Portrait Of Tracy". Nobody was writing harmonic dominated tunes like that before Jaco came along. And anybody who did it since was seen as channeling Jaco. It may seem more conventional now, but back in the day he was trailblazing with that stuff.

    • @KyleMeredith

Americana isn’t regional. In the past, pre-90’s, it was called Folk Rock, but new generations have a thing about new stamps. When this interview was recorded, that folk rock sound was having a moment in the sun and Mumford were still relatively new, as they hadn’t become whatever they are now. Most critics referred to them in that era as part of the new class of americana.
