  • I use PVC when building large costumes. Here are some techniques that you might find useful. This video covers the materials and tools you need and several methods for building structure and moving joints:
    - How to bend PVC pipe
    - How to attach pipe and connectors with screws
    - How to build a connector-based moving joint (2 types)
    - How to build a moving joint freehand
    - How to connect different sizes of PVC pipe
(My first Mechwarrior costume used the "sanded pipe" version of the joints for the landing legs and the canopy!)

If you do not need a super straight cut in a pvc or other plastic pipe etc run a piece of survey nylon string around it and pull it back and forth the friction heat will cut right through it VERY QUICKLY. I learned this doing underground utilities work with 1ft diameter pvc pipe. Try it yourself you will be amazed how well it works. It helps to score the pipe in one spot to get a precise starting point.

I enjoyed your video. I flatten 3” pvc to make a scabbard for my chainsaw, for my tractor I made one which attaches to the tractor and allow me to carry my saw on the tractor.

Another good trick for bending PVC pipe is using hot sand. Heat up clean sand in your electric frying pan or whatever appliance you have that will work to around 300 degrees (note yard sand will smell really bad, do it outside), tape one end of the pipe you want to bend shut, fill the pipe with hot sand (use a metal funnel, a plastic one will melt) tape that end closed and bend it to the shape you want. Sometimes on a smaller diameter pipe, you will need to fill it with hot sand twice to get it bendable or use the heat gun to give it additional heat. The advantage of this method is that you can heat a much longer section of pipe and you can bend it in much more ways like making a spiral and tighter bends, the sand inside will prevent the pipe from collapsing on itself.

Great content. Wish I had seen this before I tried my last PVC construction. Looking forward to seeing more.

Yeah, I need to do more on this, because it is really great stuff to work with.

Interesting. Europe is missing this kind of piping. We have dark Grey PVC-U for the pool, we can glue. White or green PPr heat joined or copper. PE is used only for cold water and mainly outside the house and/or irrigation . Steel tubing or Henco, is not used any more

Ive been looking into creating pvc wings, this will be a great help!

If you are making wings any larger than about 10ft wingspan, I'd recommend switching to aluminum square rod. PVC has the strength, but the aluminum is actually lighter and more rigid. But it is 5 times the price.

@@GriddlockCosplay if you ever make a video on how to make PVC wings id probably just copy that, but yeah 10ft is plenty wingspan for me :)

Regarding PVC burning: it produces dioxin - the very same, highly toxic leak that caused the Seveso (Italy) place to be evacuated in 1976.
All plastic's fumes are toxic, but PVC's are in the higher places of the ranking: that's why PVC is not usually labeled as "recyclable".

If I make a walking staff out of PVC, will filling it with epoxy help to "stiffen" it up? It's not very rigid and tends to flex and wobble more than I'd like. How can I make it more rigid?

    • @GriddlockCosplay
      @GriddlockCosplay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

If it needs to be straight, then switch to a wooden dowel. But if you want to have a staff that is organic and twisted, use a heat gun on it and twist it around. I have seen the distortions add a weird extra structure to the PVC. It is still flexible, but the flex is forced into all different directions and doesn't look nearly as obvious. (My daughter did this on Ep2 of Griddlock's Garage)
