    Poor Katherine Howard, my heart breaks for her when she recounts being sexually abused by men, when she was just barely into her teens. Watching her break down once she realises that they all only want the same thing from her is just devastating.

    • @jpage813
      @jpage813 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Yes! How sad she starts getting when she gets older and realizes that she’s being taken advantage of and the lyric change from “I think we have a connection” to “He says we have a connection”.

      Exactly.

    • @samstarr7125
      @samstarr7125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Yeah. After she's done singing her song, I'm automatically sold like, "you're leader of the girl group. She wins. I don't need to hear Catherine Parr's tale of survival. Katherine Howard's the winner. No decision needs to be made. She's front girl. They just have to accept that.

    • @ashleydowney1222
      @ashleydowney1222 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's sad. Although it may not historically accurate according to historians. Some say that Katherine was sexually promiscuous and that she consented to those relationships. And other historians say that she was sexually abused. The age of consent at that time was 12. So it is very confusing.

    • @samstarr7125
      @samstarr7125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have heard about that. But in this case, they went with the sexually abused hypothesis. Although, she did make it sound like she was a little promiscuous as a girl in the beginning of her song.

      Well, the musical and the movie its based on is about a p*dophile, so yeah. It's interesting and kind of gross how the cartoon tried to make Beetlejuice Lydia's friend when in the movie and the musical he is always hitting on her and trying to marry her, seems to be glorifying him and making it like "you can and should be friends with your abuser. it's fine that another version of them tried to assault you or just treat you awfully". I think they could have at least cut that "child marrying adult" plan from the musical, because it comes off as weird that we're supposed to be entertained by a child predator.

    I’d say both Sincerely Me and For Forever from Dear Evan Hansen. Most if not every song from Cabaret would fit the bill here perfectly. They are cheerful in tone, the kind of songs you could easily find yourself bopping your head and singing along to, but when you pay attention to the lyrics and the meaning behind them, it's like a combination of whiplash and a punch to the gut

    • @martinpaulsen1592

      @@martinpaulsen1592 It’s been a while since I’ve seen it. But the songs that come to mind are Cabaret, If you could see her and Tomorrow Belongs to me. I don’t think I could choose one though, because they all have their own unique kind of joviality and subsequent twist. Cabaret encourages you to live life like it’s a party, only to remind you of the terrible consequences of living like that, but then saying oh well, it’s worth it. If you could see her plays for the most part like the sweetest and most beautiful love song, then slaps you in the face right at the end. And Tomorrow Belongs to Me is glorious, hopeful and even triumphant, but when you realise who the people singing it are it changes how you see it completely

      Your could fill an entire top five from Cabaret - the show practically runs on dissonance. From Tomorrow Belongs to Me (which would be a lovely upbeat anthem if it weren't sung by Nazis in '31 Berlin), to Sally trying desperately to convince herself in Maybe This Time and the title track, to the final twist of the Emcee's If You Could See Her Through My Eyes, or the sheer disparity of Money...

    I've always viewed "You'll Be Back" less as "standard musical fare," more as yet another stylistic choice in Hamilton: King George's song is the British Pop Invasion. It sounds a lot like classic Beatles, both musically and in lyrical stylings.

    • @martinpaulsen1592
      @martinpaulsen1592 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cabaret deserves to be here, but I don't think that Tomorrow Belongs to Me is a good example for this list. It's talking about dark lyrics. The context - where it's a Nazi picnic, and the song is sung by Nazis to say "we're coming, we're bringing Germany back, and we don't care who we step on to do it" - is dark, yes, but the song itself is an upbeat anthem of taking oneself back, standing up on one's own two feet, and spitting in the eye of anyone who says you don't deserve to.
      It's an anthem of empowerment that is made dark not by its lyrics, but by its singer in the context of the show.

    I've kinda always thought "Gee, Officer Krupke" was a subtle manipulation of the members of the Jets. It's sung by the gang leaders, they acknowledge the frustration many of the underlings have felt as well as the experiences many of them may have had with the justice system in a way that labels the police as a clear enemy, meanwhile they reinforce the idea that the gang members can't change, and the leader of the gang himself finishes off the song with the line "no one wants a guy with a social disease." The sad truth feels wielded to tell the gang members "you have no choice but to stay, we are the only ones who will accept you."

He freaks me out, and if he weren't so cartoonishly over the top he'd probably be my second worst nightmare, but he's so over the top that he still fits the tone, which allows me to both get exactly why the main character picks him to feed to Audrey II, and process that doing so is still getting close to the dark side

    My answer will forever be The Ballad of Sara Berry. Beneath the upbeat pop and cheer sound, the song describes the title character’s descent into insanity and subsequent murder spree. Not to mention the depictions of societal pressure, borderline abusive parents, and an amputation in the first verse. The song ends with the main character being arrested, locked in an insane asylum, and not even realizing it because of her belief that she’s still at her prom. However, dark content alone does not make a good song. The masterful subversion of expectation and rhyming schemes, the upbeat and almost triumphant feeling of the chorus, the witty lyrics, and the sudden shift in tone near the end create an amazing listening experience. DEFINITELY check it out!
    Also Everybody’s Got The Right from Assassins, because need I say more?
