I always line the sides from the box down but everyone is saying go ear up to the box but I'm scared of throwing it off but by hitting the line by the box and then bringing it up I might have it . I know this is old but just you see it Do not buy high shears for the simple fact you going to drop them and when you do you going have to get them fix. I tell all beginner stylist use the ones they give you in school until you get the good feel of them. A good starter will be the $50 (I know cheap) but trust me on this. And remember only move your thumb not the whole hands Shear size 5 1/2 or 5 3/4 great for graduation cuts 6 in all around good 7 in very good doing men's cuts but do not get those until you master your shear work.
Finally, a barber who doesn't push the hook and sideburns back just to make it look sharper. Cool cut.
