I love your channel for a number of reasons but one of the big ones is how you don't take yourself seriously. So many Americans get offended when humour is aimed at them but you recognize it's all in good fun, especially with us English as we take the piss out of literally everything, including ourselves.

I'm English and lived in the states for a little while, indeed I was applying for citizenship before this COVID nonsense came about, and while I love the US it is their simplistic humour which was most frustrating. Although I must say there are pockets of people who do understand these things and they were the people who became my friends. In my experience I have found such people to be more common in red states, but I have found the comedy battle lines are often very clearly drawn no matter which state you are in (I should be clear and say I have only visited 23 states so I can't be accurate about all of them). Whether it is a Dem or Rep state the people seem to be very black or white when it comes to comedy, but there is more leeway with the Rep states in my humble experience.

I've said for years that American documentaries repeat information 2 or 3 time just so they are sure that their (target) audience stand a chance of understanding the facts presented. It becomes annoying, imagine if David Attenborough did that. They didn't do that type of thing on classic UK documentaries like Horizon, Equinox, Dispatches, and others. For us "nerdy" types they were informative but expected you to grasp a point as it was presented (or go look it up later).

You should definitely check out his routine about how Scottish national dress including the kilt came to be and his routine about how everything in the UK grinds to a halt at the first sign of snow. Unfortunately a lot of people have turned on him since he became so popular and successful, which is sadly typical of the UK.

It's not bad or wrong English, it's just different English. English is one of the most diverse languages on the planet. South England "I'm going to the swimming pool" or "I'm going to the pool". Up north (Yorkshire) some would say "I'm going up bath"
People get far too worked up about the differences. I used to be one of those people until maybe this year. One day in maybe January/February, I had a light bulb moment: Think about it like this, I'm in England and I speak English, you are in America so you speak Americanese. They are not the same but they are very similar. It means the endless bickering can indeed end. Life has been so much more peaceful since that idea hit me. It sweeps away the endless spelling changes and all the other crud. All you have to do in either of the languages is be as concise as possible and you surely will convey what you mean as well as possible in each language. It's all good. :o)

In truth its just a cultural thing in the UK academically taught Queens English is the base level and slang stays on the streets, so when your at school, University or work in an office you have to switch to the queens English and then switch to your area's variation of English slang in your own free time. But in the US the education institutions will change the way they teach English based on what the common man says on the streets.
What's great about this joke (and I love MM for this) is it's all in good jest, and doesn't feel insulting. But also, what I love is that the Americans are just doing what language is supposed to do - become more efficient over time. It's only archaic standards that mean English (until social media) was stuck in the past. In writing, dropping the U, using a Z instead of an S (voiced vs voiceless pronunciation), and in speech using more descriptive words. It happens everywhere Wardrobe = "Robe Guard" from French. It's a basic concept of language evolution. Pendle Hill is the most famous example. Three different periods in history wanted to call it "Hill", so called it "Pen" + "Dle" + "Hill" = Hill-Hill Hill

For me, the biggest differences between UK English and US English (not counting regional slang, which is a WHOLE different kettle of fish) are in words for things invented or popularised in a very specific time period... See, things that existed when the US was still run from England are the same on both side of the channel, so a horse, a cow, a dog or cat... Things invented in "modern times" - by which I mean in times where cross-Atlantic communication was made quicker, and cross-cultural pollination was easier due to telephones, television etc, tend to have the same name on both sides of the pond - e.g. email, satellites, helicopters... Where you see the differences are in things where both the US and UK had to come up with what they called something, WITHOUT that level of communication. One area you see this is in motoring - so in England you fill your car with petrol, and pop the bonnet to check the engine, and the boot to store your shopping. In the US, you fill your automobile with gas, and pop the hood and the trunk...

I love the joke of it, but real history here about American letter shortening of English words. Americans spelt words exactly the same until the over capitalism of the cost per telegram in the US heavily increased. When it evolved from paying total word amounts as was normal around the world, to total letters used per telegram was the total cost. Which dramatically increased the cost of American telegrams that quite quickly Americans started abbreviating words to make telegrams obviously cheaper. But an extra situation eventually formed that the newer shortened words for telegrams became the standard norm for everything else.
You could do this for any country. I'm in Australia and people think it's hilarious to say G'day to us. It's simply an abbreviation of "Good Day", a common English greeting. Not as if the English don't abbreviate words ie; BREXIT.

What happened to adverbs in American English? For example, "real quick", " real good". This is a relatively new development.
What's great about this joke (and I love MM for this) is it's all in good jest, and doesn't feel insulting.
But also, what I love is that the Americans are just doing what language is supposed to do - become more efficient over time. It's only archaic standards that mean English (until social media) was stuck in the past.
In writing, dropping the U, using a Z instead of an S (voiced vs voiceless pronunciation), and in speech using more descriptive words. It happens everywhere Wardrobe = "Robe Guard" from French.
It's a basic concept of language evolution. Pendle Hill is the most famous example. Three different periods in history wanted to call it "Hill", so called it "Pen" + "Dle" + "Hill" = Hill-Hill Hill

English has changed over the centuries from French to Latin and to my horror it is changing to something called "street talk" .Anyway horse back riding sounds pretty logical to me. and i actually find that Americans have only adapted English just as English has always been adapted. Strangely i have found American accents so easy to understand compared to some of the accents in my country where many jokes are made by U.K. comics about funny U.K. accents . The whole point is that there is very little that has not had a joke made about it .....beware making jokes about a certain religious profit that can actually get one killed....tis a very strange world.
At least Americans haven't started ending every sentence with "innit" yet but it's probably just a matter of time before they do :)

Even 'trash can' is a can for the 'trash' (rubbish), it's a bin.
For me, the biggest differences between UK English and US English (not counting regional slang, which is a WHOLE different kettle of fish) are in words for things invented or popularised in a very specific time period...
See, things that existed when the US was still run from England are the same on both side of the channel, so a horse, a cow, a dog or cat...
Things invented in "modern times" - by which I mean in times where cross-Atlantic communication was made quicker, and cross-cultural pollination was easier due to telephones, television etc, tend to have the same name on both sides of the pond - e.g. email, satellites, helicopters...
Where you see the differences are in things where both the US and UK had to come up with what they called something, WITHOUT that level of communication. One area you see this is in motoring - so in England you fill your car with petrol, and pop the bonnet to check the engine, and the boot to store your shopping. In the US, you fill your automobile with gas, and pop the hood and the trunk...
lol fair play mate.. Autumn is kinda my fave. I sorta feel many British comedians can take the piss without being 'personally offensive' (?) - they make an arse of themselves in the process to sorta avoid implying that they're perfect. It becomes less 'point and laugh' at the USA but at him, with a funny bit about the American-English thrown in.

I love the joke of it, but real history here about American letter shortening of English words. Americans spelt words exactly the same until the over capitalism of the cost per telegram in the US heavily increased. When it evolved from paying total word amounts as was normal around the world, to total letters used per telegram was the total cost. Which dramatically increased the cost of American telegrams that quite quickly Americans started abbreviating words to make telegrams obviously cheaper. But an extra situation eventually formed that the newer shortened words for telegrams became the standard norm for everything else.

You could do this for any country. I'm in Australia and people think it's hilarious to say G'day to us. It's simply an abbreviation of "Good Day", a common English greeting. Not as if the English don't abbreviate words ie; BREXIT.
