A few tips: - To find narcotics efficiently you need dogs or search the cells/prisoners manually (or do a shakedown) - Metal detectors don't work very well for narcotics, poison, etc, they are usually not made of metal. Use dogs instead or search the prisoners. - Build an export zone below deliveries/garbage so your logs (and later license plates) will be sold automatically - There is no real need to put metal detectors on the shower. Kitchen/canteen is much more important because prisoners love to steal spoons and dig tunnels.
Picked this one up in the Humble Bundle 12 yesterday. Amazing game. Totally worth the $10 minimum donation/purchase just for this game. Not to mention the 5 other games that come with it, and the 3 that will be released today if you spent more than the average amount....so I got 9 games for 10 bucks...not sure what the other three are yet, but check it out if you don't already own this one.
Instead of dumping unneeded items, dismantle them so they can be reused. You can also sell the logs as well. Make a storage room so your workers can place all the extra stuff in.
This reminds me of how I play rollercoaster tycoon. Build everything as small and dirty as possible, do no planning at all and still win the game with flying colors.
Perhaps for your next prison take high security prisoners and treat them like trash. It would be exciting to see what happens and would also help others view the other side to the game, so we can form an opinion on whether or not we should buy it for our selves. Plus, I think it would be fun to watch you be a complete scum bag to them. "You want more freedom?" *Shoot in leg.* I wonder if there is a kick option. :P
There aren't any non-self defense violence options, but they have said they are working on making "rule by force" a viable option in prison creation instead of now where you're generally just neutral throughout.

Old Dwarf Fortress building trick: plan future expansions in advance (with the dig tool) but disconnect primary connections to focus your workers (miners) on the priority sections. With the planning tool and cloning, you should just be able to set up future walls.

You only need 1 drain for showers. If you use a metal detector in the doorway though you need 3. Water can go diagonally, so a 3 wide set of drains at a 1 block door will stop the water. But if you put 1 drain in a doorway that will also stop the water.
I don't know if he does this later on, but I think he should install more metal detectors so the prisoners don't smuggle different silverware or other things into their cells and other places around the prison. :) great series so far!

A lot of contraband probably is coming from visitation. You should try a metal detector there and have a guard stationed. Also make a storage room to store those logs in, they'll be helpful to have later. Otherwise, you've done a really good job so far.

If you want them to pick up the logs you need a storge room :D you could use your ugly and small "solitary" cell separated from the rest And if you want to find narcotics easily you need to put dogs or do a cell inspection (for example a whole cellblock)
- Your metal detectors aren't detecting the "zinc" in the narcotics, they are detecting metal contraband, then the prisoner gets searched and their narcotics are discovered. - Fulfill the narcotics grant by ordering a shakedown rather than just waiting, if you want the money faster - Why is their a jail door on the morgue but a normal door on the infirmary? You don't want your doctors murdered or their drugs stolen, nobody is stealing corpses though

Yard's looking nice, if a bit far from the upper cell block, might need a common room or something maybe, And even though it's not here, folks. You've got to believe. "The Crackle is Real!"

from what i have read split kitchens do not work well. Better to make a large canteen and a large kitchen that you will never need to upgrade again
