  • After doing the other 3 wheels I recorded this, this is my first diy video, I am not a pro, just didn't see any videos out there when I went to do this. forgot to add the snap ring back in, just take the outer cap off and grind it down a little and put them back on the back axle. front axle is the same steps without the snap ring. I didn't record the hour and a half of cleaning all the old and new surfaces, but make sure everything is clean. I lifted the rear axles to 5.5 degrees with was plenty to keep the gear oil from running out of the axle. let it sit there for 48 hours and switch sides. Also afterwords clean the threads and torque all the bolts to spec, add a little lock tight as well.
    the first one I put in backwards, so hopefully this helps someone, the bevel faces inward, not outward like I originally figured, so the welded plate sits inside the hub.
    the muffler is down because I am also working on the trans, the dreaded c6 thrust bearing broke. May have a video on that coming up.

    Don’t forget the snap rings on the rear axles. And a little silicone on the aluminium cap. Great video! Thanks for posting. This will help a lot of people!😊

    Hi John, I was considering modifying my S&S M1083A1 and was very curious about the installation. After watching this, it seems pretty straightforward. So I appreciate you taking the extra time to make the video. Btw, not bad for a first TH-cam video.
    Also, once you've had a chance to put the Eco Hubs through a good workout and stress test, consider doing a following up video with your thoughts. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

    What is the tool you you are using during the first three or four minutes shoving into the hub cover bolt holes after pulling the bolts? Is it an air gun or is it some kind of brush?

    • @johnbarbarick3291
      @johnbarbarick3291  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just an air gun to blow out the sealant that was behind the bolts. All 4 of the wheels had gobs of it stuck in the bolt holes. First wheel I spent a lot of time picking it out with a needle pick and brake cleaner, then tried blowing it which got it a lot better and a lot easier.

      @@johnbarbarick3291 Thanks appreciate the response. My set is supposed to ship today! I usually comment while I watch the video and I meant to send another comment that at a later scene in the video it was obvious that was an air gun…too tired and fell asleep LOL!

    John, given that this is a rear hub can you tell us if there is any significant difference between this and a front hub replacement? Thanks!

    • @johnbarbarick3291

      It is the same except without the snap ring so they are easier. Make sure to take the cover off and put the snap ring back on the rears and seal all the covers, I saw the snap ring sitting there after I clicked to stop the video. Took it for a short spin the other day, still need to calibrate the speedometer, but it got to 60 mph with ease before I had to slow down for a red light, but was a lot smoother and quieter. Didn't have a load, but accelerated pretty good. Hopeing to get it to the hwy soon to further test it out.

    • @fsfazekas
      @fsfazekas ปีที่แล้ว

      John, my set arrived today, had a follow on question - the instructions say you have to mod the snap ring by removing some metal off the “ears”…I didn’t notice this in your video. What was your experience?

    • @johnbarbarick3291
      @johnbarbarick3291  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fsfazekas you do need to grind a little off the thick part where the holes are (the ears). You remove the outside cover (4 Allen wrench bolts), use one of the bolts from the old hub and hand thread it into the axle shaft, pull it out just enough to get the snap ring on and push it back in, clean and seal the outer cover. If you pull the axle shaft to far it will drop out, in that case, prop it to the right angle, jiggle, wiggle and shake it while turning it with light pressure till it seats back in, do not force it, it will seat in when it finds the right angle and the gears align.

    Great Video John. How did the test drive go?

    • @johnbarbarick3291

      With a stock 3116 it does great empty, does ok with 5,000 pounds, but feels it on the hills when not in its power bands, little too much between gears for heavy loads on hills. If you have a 3126 or C7 engine it will already have more power. It still had plenty of low end to tow up hills from a stop without dropping to 1st gear.
      It ran quieter, smoother and not sure on the mpg i am averaging yet, but is definitely not going through fuel as quickly. If you plan to regularly tow heavy (over 5k) I would recomend the highway gears, otherwise these are great.

      @@johnbarbarick3291 Mine has a stock 3116. I'm interested in the mpg also. Can't expect much change with a 17,000# truck. I have read claims of 70 mph with gear change. Little faster then I care to go in a LMTV. I couldn't find tires rated for 70mph.

    • @johnbarbarick3291
      @johnbarbarick3291  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does 65mph in 6th gear, so I don't plan on ever using 7th gear again. I have heard of people going over 80mph with the eco hubs, would imagine they are getting into 7th gear at that point, but my goal was only to get to 65mph and up 67 to pass because of the tire ratings. Currently I still need an alignment and balance, much over 60 it gets a bad vibration in the steering wheel, same feeling when one of our rigs at work has a steer tire goe out of balance. Currently building a removable camper box for it is taking all my free time, so it's not seeing much road time.

    • @bula001
      @bula001 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnbarbarick3291 My plans also to build a camper box. I thought about using a ambulance box but are pretty heavy. Currently to many other projects in front of it. Removable camper is good ideal. Keeps the truck usable for other things. I have found the tires get flat spots from setting. Maybe jack up all 4 corners when not being used. Have you tried the tire balance beads? Not sure they will help.

      Mike Marckel sells them, he is on the Stewart & Stevenson FMTV & LMTV - Knowledge & parts group, and I think he is also on some other LMTV groups and possibly steel soldiers forum. There is a thread about the eco hubs on steel soldiers and a lot of comments on his Facebook posts.

      @@shiftpod136 have only had one short trip so far with no load, but was massively better accelerations, smoother and quieter. I will be hooked to a small tandem axle Saturday, Sunday and July 4th, so I will be able to give a better answer after getting some highway miles on it with a 5k or so load. See how the temps do and if any noticeable power loss on the low end take off up the hills.

      @@shiftpod136 so towed a 5 thousand pound trailer for a ways and put a couple more hours on it unloaded for a parade a few towns away. Driving with little load it does great, plenty of power. With the 5 thousand pound trailer, it struggles at certain speeds up grades till it gets slow enough to downshift, when rpm are high, like 65+ mph it did fine, at 60 it couldn't hold it and slowed down to below 55 to downshift and then it could hold that (the reason semi trucks have 10+ gears so you can stay in your power bands at different speeds). At lower speeds it did fine climbing grades from a stop to 25 mph without having to drop it to 1st gear, so plenty of low end still. I am in a m1078 A0, mechanical motor with no modifications, just the stock hp. So if you plan on heavy loads (over 5k) or towing up mountains, would recommend the 3.07 gears or these with getting more hp (if you have an A1 or A2, you already have more hp). If just driving for fun, parades, travel, ex. with no major loads, this is an awsome upgrade. I am waiting on a new firewire cable to get the video off my camcorder for an in cab recording with binaural 3d audio of how it does with the trailer, was going to record more today at and after the parade but the battery was dead.

      As stated, I let the sealant dry, then take them out one at a time, clean the sealant off, reinstall with locktight and torque to the specs in the instructions provided. I tried lock tight on the first wheel, but it ended up in the sealant and none took to the threads. (The first one I installed the plate backwards with the beveled edges facing outward).
