thank you maffs guru!! a few ways to solve some questions much quicker. Q35: you can use eulers formula because we will assume the graph is planar since the question is asking to determine the number of faces. (2 = 7 - 11 + f) and f will equal 6. Q39: first you use the 4x4 matrix (without edgar) which gives 43 hours minimum allocation, then you can make a 5x4 matrix with edgar to give a minimum allocation of 39 hours, then 43 - 39 = 4

question 40 you can look at the number of activities which appear as immediate predecessors, since the given network has 2 activities which aren’t immediate predecessors to any other activity (those 2 activities converge together to finish the diagram), knowing this only table B can be right since the rest have more than 3 activities missing from the predecessor list.

Especially with the one question that had you construct a matrix out of a rule, I had your CAS shortcut (matrix-construct-then input rule and matrix order) which made me a million times more confident in answering it
I'm game! Don't have quite this level of video quality though. For Q37 I didn't have a quicker way, did the same thing. Q40 though there is a very quick way to solve. All of the tables have 4 activities at the start but only the table in option B has 2 activities that aren't immediate predecessors to anything else. Option A would finish with JMNO, option B would finish on FO, option C would finish EFO and option D would finish on FMO. Edit: I see some other commenters have already suggested this as well. Oh well!

a lot of people including myself r saying we got B for Q39 because we worked it out by hand and we can’t do hungarian on cas (idk we never got taught) but people with the inspire cas r getting D
Hi and thanks for your comment. I am pretty sure (having done it over and over again) that D is the answer. Again, I might be wrong ... and will see ... but I can't see any other way of doing it. The wording did make he have to sit and think for a while.
As someone who doesn't do Hungarian Algorithm on the CAS I managed to do it by hand but it just took a while. I ended up doing the algorithm 5 times which gave me an answer of D in the end. (I'm a tutor, not a student)
@@talianewfieldd I've just added this in the description which might help! For those who do not have the ti-nSpire and hence the program which works this out I tried to find out how to do this by hand without having to do it 5 times! When you add Edgars line into the CAS it works it out for you. When I try and do it by hand it didn't work. Until I realised that the matrix MUST be square. A quick search of google found the following: "I'm trying to implement the Hungarian algorithm. Everything is fine except for when the matrix isn't square. All the methods I've searched are saying that I should make it square by adding dummy rows/columns, and filling the dummy row/column with zeros." So. When you add Task 5 and make the column zero and THEN do the algorithm, it will work,
Q40 you can elimate all but B as a dummy is needy for all the others as they have paradoxical letter combos ( eg in A, L appears alone and with something else)

@@MarvelShorts_336- I got it right based of hidden chance. If you look at A compared to the other 3 answers, it’s completely different so I immediately ruled it out. That leaves B,C,D Activity F is the same for answers B & C, which allowed me to rule of D. That leaves B and C. To decide here, you look at the other similarities that D has either B&C. If we look at activity K, it’s the same for B & D. The last 4 activities of C also match B. This means, by chance and the way VCAA makes their ‘alternative answers’ B has to be the most likely option. I used this technique for 3 questions today in the paper, and by luck, this little algorithm got me all three correct.
@@RGDRaiseYT Using your approach is the way to go here as distractors often give clues. Once you've narrowed it down to B, a simple check should then be done by referencing the table to the diagram.

Yup! I've just sat and rethought how to do a lot of the questions and would use the dummies for 39, a quicker way for 31 and a couple of the other questions!
@@JesseT-g1k you look for activities which are repeated in the predecessors list. If they appear exactly the same, then it's not a dummy. If they appear differently .. they are a dummy. The Cambridge book does a pretty good job in explaining this.
Question 40 can be done by inspection, in reading time I found that answer C and D both included dummy paths and answer A’s values which had no predecessors do not correlate to the graph, the same can be said for question 31 as J has already won 2 games and one of which being against K therefore no matter what happens, J can never fall below K in the ranks meaning J can never be last.
Hi! Thanks so much for your comment. In hindsight, I should have checked for dummies first!! As A, C and D all would need dummies. Sigh. This might have made this quicker. But ... I got there in the end and will make sure I check for dummies and predecessors first ... if this question ever comes up again!
I think there is an easier way to do q39, you make a new column (task) all as 1s and add E into the matrix, whoever gets assigned the task with the 1 is the weakest link (C). You could then sub them out of the matrix for E and find the time lost compared to the original matrix. I don't know if this made any sense or if it would work for similar questions but it worked for me with this question!
I just added an update to the description for the video. I didn't know there was another way until about an hour ago when I was trying to find out how to do it by hand. You add another column and call it Task 5. Make the values in the column all zero and then do the normal Hungarian Algorithm. It works perfectly and gives the correct answer.
@Maffsguru going into monday with full preparation as ur a generally the goat,. Although I didn't generally do that great with 20/40 on Exam 1. But with ur tips it will definetely help me get the score I want for Exam 2.

For question 31 I just figured that 'I' could end up with a one-step dominance of either 1, 2, or 3, and 'J' could end up with a one-step dominance of 2 or 3. Given 'K' has a one-step dominance of only 1, I figured that either 'I' or 'K' would be the only ones ever ranking last overall, therefore 'J' would never rank last - so D is the answer. Whilst this working/thought process doesn't check the two-step dominance and therefore overall dominance, I figured 'J' still wouldn't be last given they have a greater one-step dominance, they should also have a greater 2-step dominance and therefore overall dominance. Does this check out for this question? I realise it wouldn't always be a reliable method for this type of question depending on the numbers that might be given, but for this particular one I was able to get it done fairly quickly this way.

A someone with a CASIO I find it a little unfair and strange that vcaa would make q39 is virtually unsolvable without a certain CAS function. I’d say it definitely makes most people disadvantaged when solving this question so the percentage of people who got this right will probably be really low. Anyways enough of my rant, thank you so much for the video, well done for posting so soon after the exam, and I will definitely be tuning into more of your videos for methods next year!
I fully agree - I personally found out about the CAS function the day before and was able to take advantage of it on the day. Completely unfair for those who use a different calc entirely or are not taught about it at school.
VCAA pulled a stunt like this last year with the 2023 Methods Exam 2 paper where one of the questions you could solve using a CASIO, but a CAS couldn’t solve it forcing CAS users to do it by hand; somebody really needs to resolve this!
On reflection, I didn't know that the Hungarian algorithm can be used with more people than there are tasks. Whilst doing it by hand is a pain in the butt, you didn't need to do it 5 times. It could have been done twice. Firstly to get the original allocation and then to find the allocation with Edgar added. I get the frustration that there is a CAS program for the Ti-nSpire. Texas have 80% market share and so it makes sense for someone to write a program to solve it. There are SOOO many programs out there for the CAS. I have hoped that someone would write one for the ClassPad and make it seem a little more equitable. Thank you for your kind comment about my videos. I really appreciate it!
I get it ... I really do. But I have been hammering on about this in all my videos - including the 2023 VCAA solutions video where I discovered it and explained how to use it. I was really hoping more students and teachers were aware that it was an option.

For qu 31, given it's mc, a quick strategy to check would be to observe that K only has 1 one step win, and only 4 two step wins (ie k only beat l and l can only beat max of 3)-so 4 total. Just by looking at J, even if they didn't beat I, they would have 2 one step (H and K, and then for their existing wins H has 2 two step and K has 1 two step for a total of 5) Thus J has more than K and can't finish 5th. This sounds long...but it only took a few seconds of looking at it!

Hi. I don't think you can use it as a widget. It is annoying that you have to open it in a new document ... but the time it saves you in doing the Hungarian Algorithm certainly makes up for it!
Better solution for question 40 - there are two final activities, aka activities that don't act as a prerequisite for any other activity. Only B had two activities that didn't act a prerequsite (O and F), the rest had three.
Thanks for the comment. I really appreciate it. I have a number of comments trying to point me in a better direction to answer this. To be honest, I was so exhausted by the end of the paper, I didn't even consider looking at C and D. I will make sure, next year, to use this as an example in my teaching.
Question 40 B is the only option with one of the activities (K) with four immediate predecessors that is also and immediate predecessor in the bunch of 4 leading into (F). Making it the only possible solution without having to map it all out. This can be seen that A C and D are not possible by looking at the activities with 4 immediate predecessors.

Is there any chance VCAA give both B and D correct for Q39 as I used the steps of Hungarian Algorithm without the CAS extension and got B just like many others

How do I get a Hungarian algorithm on my calculator you awesome man (I hated the 39th question I've been trying to work it out for an hour now, never again)
You need to have your teacher download it and then use the teacher software to transfer it onto your CAS. 39 was a pain in the bum! I can't imagine how you were supposed to do it if you had a CASIO calculator. Trying to do it by hand would have been tough. Perhaps there is another way of doing it ... but I don't see one at the moment.
@@MaffsGuru I found another way to do it, I made task dummy and I was able to find it out through that, it saves a lot more time doing that than everything else
That is a really hard question to answer to be honest. I think it was nicer on the whole. Some of the questions took a time to complete which would have felt tough in the actual exam room. The wording on some meant you really had to think, but I think it covered all the content well. Let's see what the exam on Monday will bring!

I think it was a lot more accessible to be honest. I found the questions a lot nicer than previous years. There was some change of wording which made me have to think for a while ... but it wasn't as horrible as it could have been. I hope you feel you have done well. And ... not a problem. I enjoy doing the exams ... gives me something to do of an evening lol.
@MaffsGuru really? I've been talking to people in person and on forums and stuff and so many strong students performed very poorly and the consensus was that the exam was quite difficult
@@glyphocyxniefwe1416 Now I feel bad. There were some interesting question which were worded differently than before. And some of the questions too a shed load of time to complete. This might be why people are finding it hard. Some students were telling me that they didn't have their normal 30 minutes to check ... and this made it feel harder. Hopefully, even though people found it hard, they did better than they think.

For Q40, there is an easier way you could do that. In the exam, I basically I found out which TWO activities are not immediate predecessors of other activities. We need exactly 2 as indicated by the graph. Options A, C, and D all had 3, so therefore, the answer was B.
Thanks so much for this. I have had a few other similar comments. To be honest, I was exhausted at the end of the paper (after a LONG day) and I was just grateful the paper was over and I found a solutions which wasn't D. I'll have a look at it again in a few days :)

@@MaffsGuru I thought that you could put Edgar’s times in a fifth row and create a fifth task, which would all be 0’s and would model when someone is allocated nothing. Then you can apply the Hungarian algorithm to these new tasks and I found a minimum allocation of 41. What are your thoughts on this/could this be right? I was quite confused by the wording though…
@@x2haze I had the same thought ... but this wouldn't make the matrix square and nothing I have taught before suggested putting zeros in. The wording made me think long and hard for a few minutes. The only sensible way left was to replace each of the people in the table and work out the allocation again.
@@x2haze that is exactly what you are supposed to do! I just learned that myself. I ran it by hand and came out with the correct answer. With Task 5 all zeros. I'm surprised you got 41. Perhaps go back and check it again. When I had 5 rows and 5 columns, with the last column as a zero, it gave me 39.

Hi, There is a quicker way to do question 37, if you assume x and y are on the critical path, we see that for the critical path to equal 34, x has to be 14-y. None of the answers make it such that this is the case, meaning that both x and y arent on the critical path. Then we take the case where y is not on the critical path but x is, meaning y is greater than 7, one scenario for this and it is only true if x=7, so cross that one off. Then we have to assume the x is not on the critical path but y is, this is only the case when x is greater than 10 and y is less than 7, which is only a possibility in D, where x is 11. Plug it in and we see it is correct.
I am a little confused. I'm going to look more at what you're saying ... but I don't see how the critical path has anything to do with this question. Pretty much everyone I spoke with says it's trial and error. They were smarter than me and started at the end!

I can't really comment on this. I felt they were similar except for only have 4 options to choose from. The questions pretty much covered the content in the same way others did.

It’s impossible to say at the moment, in 2023, it would’ve been a B+ and in 2022, it would’ve been an A. Judging by the fact that I feel most people have found this to be more difficult, i’d say it’s closer to being an A, but some people have found this years paper to be easier than 2023.
It turns out you only needed to do it twice. I didn’t know that you could have 5 rows and it would return the best allocation from those 5 even when one is ignored. I learned something too!

a few ways to solve some questions much quicker.
Q35: you can use eulers formula because we will assume the graph is planar since the question is asking to determine the number of faces. (2 = 7 - 11 + f) and f will equal 6.
Q39: first you use the 4x4 matrix (without edgar) which gives 43 hours minimum allocation, then you can make a 5x4 matrix with edgar to give a minimum allocation of 39 hours, then 43 - 39 = 4

question 40 you can look at the number of activities which appear as immediate predecessors, since the given network has 2 activities which aren’t immediate predecessors to any other activity (those 2 activities converge together to finish the diagram), knowing this only table B can be right since the rest have more than 3 activities missing from the predecessor list.

For Q37 I didn't have a quicker way, did the same thing. Q40 though there is a very quick way to solve. All of the tables have 4 activities at the start but only the table in option B has 2 activities that aren't immediate predecessors to anything else. Option A would finish with JMNO, option B would finish on FO, option C would finish EFO and option D would finish on FMO.
Edit: I see some other commenters have already suggested this as well. Oh well!
@@BossClockFFXIV another way is to look at dummies. It seems that A, C and D would all require dummies. Sigh. This was MUCH quicker!!!

a lot of people including myself r saying we got B for Q39 because we worked it out by hand and we can’t do hungarian on cas (idk we never got taught) but people with the inspire cas r getting D
Hi and thanks for your comment. I am pretty sure (having done it over and over again) that D is the answer. Again, I might be wrong ... and will see ... but I can't see any other way of doing it. The wording did make he have to sit and think for a while.
As someone who doesn't do Hungarian Algorithm on the CAS I managed to do it by hand but it just took a while. I ended up doing the algorithm 5 times which gave me an answer of D in the end. (I'm a tutor, not a student)

For those who do not have the ti-nSpire and hence the program which works this out I tried to find out how to do this by hand without having to do it 5 times! When you add Edgars line into the CAS it works it out for you. When I try and do it by hand it didn't work. Until I realised that the matrix MUST be square. A quick search of google found the following:
"I'm trying to implement the Hungarian algorithm. Everything is fine except for when the matrix isn't square. All the methods I've searched are saying that I should make it square by adding dummy rows/columns, and filling the dummy row/column with zeros."
So. When you add Task 5 and make the column zero and THEN do the algorithm, it will work,
Q40 you can elimate all but B as a dummy is needy for all the others as they have paradoxical letter combos ( eg in A, L appears alone and with something else)

If you look at A compared to the other 3 answers, it’s completely different so I immediately ruled it out.
That leaves B,C,D
Activity F is the same for answers B & C, which allowed me to rule of D.
That leaves B and C. To decide here, you look at the other similarities that D has either B&C. If we look at activity K, it’s the same for B & D. The last 4 activities of C also match B.
This means, by chance and the way VCAA makes their ‘alternative answers’ B has to be the most likely option.
I used this technique for 3 questions today in the paper, and by luck, this little algorithm got me all three correct.
@@RGDRaiseYT Using your approach is the way to go here as distractors often give clues. Once you've narrowed it down to B, a simple check should then be done by referencing the table to the diagram.

With question 40 you can look at the immediate predessors and immediately see that B is the only one without a dummy. I did it reading time.
Yup! I've just sat and rethought how to do a lot of the questions and would use the dummies for 39, a quicker way for 31 and a couple of the other questions!

@@JesseT-g1k you look for activities which are repeated in the predecessors list. If they appear exactly the same, then it's not a dummy. If they appear differently .. they are a dummy. The Cambridge book does a pretty good job in explaining this.

Question 40 can be done by inspection, in reading time I found that answer C and D both included dummy paths and answer A’s values which had no predecessors do not correlate to the graph, the same can be said for question 31 as J has already won 2 games and one of which being against K therefore no matter what happens, J can never fall below K in the ranks meaning J can never be last.
Hi! Thanks so much for your comment. In hindsight, I should have checked for dummies first!! As A, C and D all would need dummies. Sigh. This might have made this quicker. But ... I got there in the end and will make sure I check for dummies and predecessors first ... if this question ever comes up again!
I think there is an easier way to do q39, you make a new column (task) all as 1s and add E into the matrix, whoever gets assigned the task with the 1 is the weakest link (C). You could then sub them out of the matrix for E and find the time lost compared to the original matrix. I don't know if this made any sense or if it would work for similar questions but it worked for me with this question!
I just added an update to the description for the video. I didn't know there was another way until about an hour ago when I was trying to find out how to do it by hand. You add another column and call it Task 5. Make the values in the column all zero and then do the normal Hungarian Algorithm. It works perfectly and gives the correct answer.
@Maffsguru going into monday with full preparation as ur a generally the goat,. Although I didn't generally do that great with 20/40 on Exam 1. But with ur tips it will definetely help me get the score I want for Exam 2.

@@fatima-ul2dq I would love to ... but I think I've answered pretty much every VCAA exam out there! And I'm not allowed to do company exams :(
For question 31 I just figured that 'I' could end up with a one-step dominance of either 1, 2, or 3, and 'J' could end up with a one-step dominance of 2 or 3. Given 'K' has a one-step dominance of only 1, I figured that either 'I' or 'K' would be the only ones ever ranking last overall, therefore 'J' would never rank last - so D is the answer.
Whilst this working/thought process doesn't check the two-step dominance and therefore overall dominance, I figured 'J' still wouldn't be last given they have a greater one-step dominance, they should also have a greater 2-step dominance and therefore overall dominance.
Does this check out for this question? I realise it wouldn't always be a reliable method for this type of question depending on the numbers that might be given, but for this particular one I was able to get it done fairly quickly this way.

A someone with a CASIO I find it a little unfair and strange that vcaa would make q39 is virtually unsolvable without a certain CAS function. I’d say it definitely makes most people disadvantaged when solving this question so the percentage of people who got this right will probably be really low. Anyways enough of my rant, thank you so much for the video, well done for posting so soon after the exam, and I will definitely be tuning into more of your videos for methods next year!
I fully agree - I personally found out about the CAS function the day before and was able to take advantage of it on the day. Completely unfair for those who use a different calc entirely or are not taught about it at school.
VCAA pulled a stunt like this last year with the 2023 Methods Exam 2 paper where one of the questions you could solve using a CASIO, but a CAS couldn’t solve it forcing CAS users to do it by hand; somebody really needs to resolve this!
Totally agree and I'm going to contact VCAA about this one.
On reflection, I didn't know that the Hungarian algorithm can be used with more people than there are tasks. Whilst doing it by hand is a pain in the butt, you didn't need to do it 5 times. It could have been done twice. Firstly to get the original allocation and then to find the allocation with Edgar added. I get the frustration that there is a CAS program for the Ti-nSpire. Texas have 80% market share and so it makes sense for someone to write a program to solve it. There are SOOO many programs out there for the CAS. I have hoped that someone would write one for the ClassPad and make it seem a little more equitable. Thank you for your kind comment about my videos. I really appreciate it!
I get it ... I really do. But I have been hammering on about this in all my videos - including the 2023 VCAA solutions video where I discovered it and explained how to use it. I was really hoping more students and teachers were aware that it was an option.

For qu 31, given it's mc, a quick strategy to check would be to observe that K only has 1 one step win, and only 4 two step wins (ie k only beat l and l can only beat max of 3)-so 4 total. Just by looking at J, even if they didn't beat I, they would have 2 one step (H and K, and then for their existing wins H has 2 two step and K has 1 two step for a total of 5) Thus J has more than K and can't finish 5th. This sounds long...but it only took a few seconds of looking at it!

Hi. I don't think you can use it as a widget. It is annoying that you have to open it in a new document ... but the time it saves you in doing the Hungarian Algorithm certainly makes up for it!

Better solution for question 40 - there are two final activities, aka activities that don't act as a prerequisite for any other activity. Only B had two activities that didn't act a prerequsite (O and F), the rest had three.

To be honest, I was so exhausted by the end of the paper, I didn't even consider looking at C and D. I will make sure, next year, to use this as an example in my teaching.
Question 40 B is the only option with one of the activities (K) with four immediate predecessors that is also and immediate predecessor in the bunch of 4 leading into (F). Making it the only possible solution without having to map it all out. This can be seen that A C and D are not possible by looking at the activities with 4 immediate predecessors.
And i just read down - the dummies should have probably been even easier to spot :)

How do I get a Hungarian algorithm on my calculator you awesome man (I hated the 39th question I've been trying to work it out for an hour now, never again)
You need to have your teacher download it and then use the teacher software to transfer it onto your CAS. 39 was a pain in the bum! I can't imagine how you were supposed to do it if you had a CASIO calculator. Trying to do it by hand would have been tough. Perhaps there is another way of doing it ... but I don't see one at the moment.
@@MaffsGuru I found another way to do it, I made task dummy and I was able to find it out through that, it saves a lot more time doing that than everything else

That is a really hard question to answer to be honest. I think it was nicer on the whole. Some of the questions took a time to complete which would have felt tough in the actual exam room. The wording on some meant you really had to think, but I think it covered all the content well. Let's see what the exam on Monday will bring!

I think it was a lot more accessible to be honest. I found the questions a lot nicer than previous years. There was some change of wording which made me have to think for a while ... but it wasn't as horrible as it could have been. I hope you feel you have done well. And ... not a problem. I enjoy doing the exams ... gives me something to do of an evening lol.
@MaffsGuru really? I've been talking to people in person and on forums and stuff and so many strong students performed very poorly and the consensus was that the exam was quite difficult
@@glyphocyxniefwe1416 Now I feel bad. There were some interesting question which were worded differently than before. And some of the questions too a shed load of time to complete. This might be why people are finding it hard. Some students were telling me that they didn't have their normal 30 minutes to check ... and this made it feel harder. For Q40, there is an easier way you could do that. In the exam, I basically I found out which TWO activities are not immediate predecessors of other activities. We need exactly 2 as indicated by the graph. Options A, C, and D all had 3, so therefore, the answer was B.
Thanks so much for this. I have had a few other similar comments. To be honest, I was exhausted at the end of the paper (after a LONG day) and I was just grateful the paper was over and I found a solutions which wasn't D. I'll have a look at it again in a few days :)

Hi! Thanks so much for your comment. I'm about 90% confident that's the only way it should have been done. I know there are other theories floating around, but I can't see how it could have been done any other way - in the time you had.
@@MaffsGuru I thought that you could put Edgar’s times in a fifth row and create a fifth task, which would all be 0’s and would model when someone is allocated nothing. Then you can apply the Hungarian algorithm to these new tasks and I found a minimum allocation of 41. What are your thoughts on this/could this be right? I was quite confused by the wording though…
@@x2haze I had the same thought ... but this wouldn't make the matrix square and nothing I have taught before suggested putting zeros in. The wording made me think long and hard for a few minutes. The only sensible way left was to replace each of the people in the table and work out the allocation again.
@@x2haze that is exactly what you are supposed to do! I just learned that myself. I ran it by hand and came out with the correct answer. With Task 5 all zeros. I'm surprised you got 41. Perhaps go back and check it again. When I had 5 rows and 5 columns, with the last column as a zero, it gave me 39.

I think it had some time consuming questions ... but I think it wasn't too bad. I quite liked it. Some wordy questions which took some time to decode.

Hi, There is a quicker way to do question 37, if you assume x and y are on the critical path, we see that for the critical path to equal 34, x has to be 14-y. None of the answers make it such that this is the case, meaning that both x and y arent on the critical path. Then we take the case where y is not on the critical path but x is, meaning y is greater than 7, one scenario for this and it is only true if x=7, so cross that one off. Then we have to assume the x is not on the critical path but y is, this is only the case when x is greater than 10 and y is less than 7, which is only a possibility in D, where x is 11. Plug it in and we see it is correct.
I am a little confused. I'm going to look more at what you're saying ... but I don't see how the critical path has anything to do with this question. Pretty much everyone I spoke with says it's trial and error. They were smarter than me and started at the end!

I can't really comment on this. I felt they were similar except for only have 4 options to choose from. The questions pretty much covered the content in the same way others did.

It’s impossible to say at the moment, in 2023, it would’ve been a B+ and in 2022, it would’ve been an A. Judging by the fact that I feel most people have found this to be more difficult, i’d say it’s closer to being an A, but some people have found this years paper to be easier than 2023.

It turns out you only needed to do it twice. I didn’t know that you could have 5 rows and it would return the best allocation from those 5 even when one is ignored. I learned something too!
