Oh, this was basically the soundtrack to EVERY awkward 1980s and 1990s young-teen school dance. Of course it took about 5 minutes for HIM to ask HER to dance, and another 5 minutes for HER to check with friends to approve, and by then the song was over. BUT this was usually followed up with Prince's "Little Red Corvette" which was enough of a mix between fast dancing and slow dancing to be acceptable by the chaperones.

This song has the unique ability to make you think that lead singer Tony Hadley is going to belt...then denies you. Until he does. And he does it like a boss. So may New Wave (or New Romance) artists' voices were overlooked because they were considered a trend and nobody took them seriously, until songs like this came out (or Bono in U2, or Alison Moyet in Yazoo, or solo). I understand why people recommended 'True', but I really, REALLY think you should make it three Spandau Ballet tracks in a row and finish with 'Through The Barricades': read up the background to the song and it'll hit you in all the feels. If you like Spandau Ballet you'll probably also like ABC, a similarly 'classy' band from the same era. Check out 'The Look of Love' (hilarious official video BTW) or 'All Of My Heart'. When I was a teenager, an instrumental version of The Look Of Love was the theme tune to a radio show that played some seriously good tunes on a Saturday night: good memories... 🙂
