  • In this video, we improve on last year's technique of storing the honey supers on moth Crystals so they come out in the spring with no wax moth damage and ready to go. Check out how fast and easy this improved method was compared to last year.

    Darren, next time use the weight of the supers to hold the plastic wrap when you start wrapping. Just lift a super a bit, stick the plastic in, and then wrap em like a banshee!

    Hey how about showing us the unwrapping in the spring? How many moth crystals are left, condition of the paper, airing out time before use, etc.

      Hi Kathy. Glad to see you are knocking the dust off of some of these old videos. LOL I think these were from 2019. Not much going on right now in the bee yard. All set for winter, although we just had an 85 deg day last week. Crazy weather. Thanks for stoppoing in and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    I've been told if you put the frames of drawn comb in the freezer for 24 hours after the bees clean them up the wax moth larvae will die and you can stack them ,wrap up with plastic it will be good until spring.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a big deep freeze dedicated to beekeeping, that would probably work.

    What happens if you leave these supers in their place at the top of beehives, please? In addition, what would you do for this situation in horizontap beehives, please?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You shouldn't leave them on over winter. It's extra space your bees have to heat with their bodies and they won't survive winter. If you leave them on full of honey, the bees will migrate up into them, but I run queen excluders, so the queen won't be able to move up and the cluster would stay low with the queen and starve. Honey supers are for honey harvesting only. You need to get them off. I would think for a horizontal hive, you would still want to minimize the open air hive space the bees have to keep warm over winter.

    Darren, I have a deep box that has drawn comb in the frames and I would like to store it with my supers, but several of the frames have pollen or bee bread in them. Would it be okay to still use this same method or will the crystals adulterate those frames with the pollen?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rob. I really don’t know on that. I would think so though. Usually the crystals are gone by springtime gets here. It’s when you first store them and the time after before a freeze to kill any moth larvae that emerge and protect from moths getting in there while still active.

    @Jerome Bee Farm & Homestead, THX for sharing. I'm using this method. The question I have is do you only put the crystals in this one time and don't have to add any additional crystals?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do it in October/November yes one time. I just put some away (August) and I will need to check them again in October and may need to retreat. Once it freezes, most of the moths are gone. I’m in central Oklahoma.

  • @ardagman
    @ardagman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Darren when do you remove the crystals, and start to air out the supers for next springs use?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Duane, thanks for stopping by. Usually I air them out towards the end of March about 2 days before I plan to install them. For me it's when the red bud trees start to bloom. Here's a video from last year when I aired them out. th-cam.com/video/kV_Qsjz9r_4/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Do supers need to be stored in a heated area or can they be stored in a cold non climate controlled area?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Steve, I don't think it matters where they are stored just so long as once the crystals are gone moths can't get into the boxes. My building in this video isn't heated and they do just fine.
