The "wall of text" design can't be avoided really given the huge card pool BUT it's killed my enthusiasm for spoilers. I usually read a few cards and then my f'ing eyes glaze over.
Something important about Tazri and cycling: you can't use the mana from the tap ability that she hands out to pay for cycling costs when cycling a card since a creature in your hand is NOT actually a creature, it is a creature CARD and thus Tazris mana can not be used to activate it's abilities. You also can't pay for channel, ninjutsu or similar stuff where you activate the ability of a creature in your hand. Same thing goes for the graveyard or exil or any zone that is not the battlefield. Only on the battlefield does a creature card become and actual creature.
For the Urabrask//the great work: you do still have to pay the correct colors for any instant or sorcery you want to cast from your opponents graveyard. The 3 treasure help but you still have to pay the correct colors.

Rona, Herald of Invasion rules. I use her in Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer for the looting, and when I need an absolute house more than the discard I'm ready.
I built Otharri, re-tooling the precon. Awesome card, lots of fun and things to experiment with. Lots of interesting and fun calls here.

this week end I managed to "scam" my friends Sauron deck by flickering both Halo Forger and Ertai Resurrected while having malakir rebirth in the graveyard.Halo forger trigger happens first recasting malakir rebirth targeting Ertai, then Ertai ETBS targeting Sauron. For the ward you sacrifice Ertai to the ward since hes legendary then get the reanimation effect for another ETB. Never thought I'd get value from my opponents ward sacrifice a legendary
I'm not sure that works. You have to select targets as both creatures enter and Sauron's ward trigger should be on top of both your abilities.

I also absolutely love Otharri! Became one of my favorite decks ver quickly. It is so much fun because it gradually gets stronger turn by turn, is very resilient to board wipes and removal and just makes sure that even if it gets removed you come back with an instant board state to continue smashing face. Extra combats, ability copiers, proliferate and token duplicators also make it increadibly explosive.
I think the term for Seizan-type "huggy decks" you're looking for is Group Slug. I know generally Mogis, God of Slaughter and similar anti-hug or stax concepts are more the face of group Slug, but i think the two meet in the middle somewhere and generally there are people who enjoy a clock that speeds up a game. One of my all time favorite cards is Descent Into Avernus as it tends to dramatically impact the game once in effect.
Agreed! I used to play on demos discord a few times, and then and now my fav deck is still my mogis slug. I don't play much stax, just a lot of "damage to all opponents" type stuff. These games take too long, I gotta inject some crazy and some time limit in hahaha
I built an Aragorn deck and really leaned into the multicolored theme with a sub-theme of humans (turns out there is quite a bit of overlap there) and I love it. I had a game where the table was just constantly removing my Aragorn, so I jokingly made a "mana spent for Aragorn" tracker and I got it up to 66 mana total during the course of the game lmao. He is quite powerful as my pod-mates would tell you, so just make sure not to stack the deck with too many tutors and good-stuff cards as tempting as it may seem!
I love that you talked about both Aragorn and Sauron at number 1 even if you were mostly talking about Aragorn in how you weren't talking about him.
I cannot think of any two commander cards that feel more specifically designed to face one another. Like their abilities just parallel so well and give the whole table a vibe where weirdly imo both are probably spell slinging a lot as Aragorn reads like a Lucky Charms commander to me.
I have a Rocco deck so it was cool to see him so high. He's super fun. People think they're cool with it until big spells they can't cast in time get sent to exile.

I have a sauron deck with every amass orcs and ring tempt card in the colors (which ended up having a really versatile suite, cus theres a lot of cards like "[good effect], also the ring tempts you/amass orcs". Counterspells, card draw, removal, creatures.
I also threw in madness, flashback, and graveyard matters cards
I love your perspective on things. I’ve built two of these! And only the commanders that I feel I was able to really do something interesting with.
love that you put Rocco in the # 2 spot as soon as i play this card at my Saturday games everyone knows how deadly he will be this card is allways a big treat at my Saturday games .
Otharri is soo underrated he is super resilient

Funnily enough Crackleburr is also amazing in Tazri Stalwart Survivor. If you have Crackleburr, Tazri, and two other blue creatures, you can activate Crackleburr's last ability any number of times, netting 1 mana each time from Tazri's ability. In general, the Llorwyn block untap creatures are just ridiculously good with Tazri
Ob Nixilis Captive Kingpin has become my favorite commander of this year, it's incredible really. It goes "infinite" so easily and has a lot of sinergies with all those common bulk 1 damage cards, I had a lot of those laying around due to my old Rakdos Lord of Riots deck and having Ob as a commander made it a thousand times better, it does become the boogeyman of a playgroup really fast tho.
Ob Nixilis is definitely in that “the deck builds itself” category, where there are like 2 different deck designs on EDHREC that have been copy and pasted ad nauseum. The budget version and the high roller version.
Didn’t really build a lot this year. One thing I did do was pivot my Simic +1 counters deck to a proliferate deck with the new Ezuri at the helm.
I also build Samwise Gamgee from LOTR and it’s a gross deck. Honestly might take it apart because it does too much. The amount of triggers is a real pain.
Shalai and Hallar, and Aragorn the Uniter are my two favorites this year. Love the video content!!
Aragorn was almost too good. So much work put in.

@@actiondk2279 I tried to build a non-aggressive deck with all of the doctors from the Doctor who set and it's still crazy. I have to play it in a lobby cause he's good bro
I love my rocco deck, it's the deck I've been having the most fun with. I also love my urtet list since I'm a huge myr fan, but rocco was my biggest surprise for sure
The Invoker creatures come to mind for Agatha. (Wildheart Invoker, Bhaal's Envoker, Valakut Envoker)
I’m so glad that Cirdan got mentioned on here! I built him as a funky group hug/blink/big mana creatures. My whole group has a blast playing against it.
My favorite this year was Treebeard Gracious host.
Cirdan is probably my favorite commander of the year, the mini game he adds is SO fun!
One thing about Rocco is that the showcase version looks great. I built it too and it's tons of fun.
Into the AM is by far the best shirt brand I've ever owned.
The sad thing about the food commanders is their inclusion of either white OR black, which excludes a lot of neat cards from interacting with each other. I really love my black food cards, so it's agony seeing such awesome commanders without black in their identity. :(
I know that heliod is n°4 only because he has 4 as cmc, he is a 4/4 and most importantly he has a flavour text! (loved the video)
I built a Xavier Sal deck as a legend rule deck, trying to make copies of my commander either by making the copies non legendary or removing legend rule all together
Cycling as an acticvated ability is super clutch I wont lie. Kept a sketchy but great 1 land hand at recent prerelease. t1 played the mana dork who taps for mana for dino/dino abilities.
t2...still havent drawn second land. tap dude, tap land...use my forest cycling dinosaur. get land 2...easily win with my hand of 3/4 drop dinos. XD
I have built that Heliod deck and my god it is insanely good
So insane. It's not a hug theme like you think. It's, your opponent draws more than once and I snowball into an end step win.
I also built Rocco. A couple games within the playgroup, and he is no longer seen as group huggish.
He is closer to a Nekusar in evaluation. Ive had to shift my protection up quite a bit!
It's kind of embarrassing how bad some people's card evaluation skills are. Almost every youtuber and streamer immediately dismissed Rocco as soon as they saw the card-share text and didn't even try to think critically about the rest. I actually think there's a good chance that Rocco's cheaper mana cost makes them a BETTER commander than Nekusar or Prosper, but some people have to play against it before they understand it. Glad to see EDH Deckbuilding recognizing Rocco's potential as both a powerful and tremendously fun commander.

There were a lot of cool ones. I really like the master formed a new, witch king of angmar, Indominus rex, tazri, polukranos and the thirteenth doctor.
I use SAint Traft and Rem Karolus as a Vehicle commander
I want to give a nod to *Venser, Corpse Puppet* for being a balanced Infect commander. He's very decision heavy, using his Hollow Sentinel tokens as blockers, sac fodder, and eventually combo pieces to close out the game.
The last 3 commanders I've built actually have flavor text on them!

I do wish he would be more positive in his videos again. I missed when he would talk about the cool ways to use niche cards and how they worked together. I get enough negativity in the real worlds id like to get something that isn't pumped full of complaints about how "I wish this commander did less" when he still puts it in his top 20 commanders list.

generally it's hard to play against due to instant speed and explosive card advantage.
Currently using Wayta to build the Enrage typal deck I've always wanted to construct.
I honestly thought you wouldn’t like Zimone and Dina. It’s a very powerful card that does alot and I thought that it kinda built itself. But the way that you explained it make sense, there is multiple different ways to build it and it doesn’t truly build itself
i would say it's an easy build. it's not hard to make a really good deck with all those payoffs. but i imagine most decks aren't going to look the same. the thing that annoys me most about certain commanders is that build is so obvious that most decks are just carbon copies.
Love my Heliod deck, will definitely jump on discord to play a game with it sometime!
I'm putting Seizan in my Aclazots deck. He benefits off of discarding, but I don't want it to be a completely feel-bad deck, so I'm throwing in grouphug draw like Font of Mythos, Howling Mine, Temple Bell, Mikokoro Center of the Sea, and Gaier Reach Sanitarium. I get my discard triggers and bats, and everybody rummages through cards.

Just as a constructive criticism, it would be nice to have time stamps to find any of the commanders more easily
why would you be trying to find them? it's a list from 20 to 1
how do you hunt for something specific with kethek? would only work in scenarios similar to sacrificing a 3 drop, having no 1 drops and only one 2 drop in your entire 99. every other creature is legendary besides whichever ones you're trying to hit or?
I always wanted to build a Flash Deck, Heliod seemed perfect!
But i opted not to, i imagined the lines of play and i think he would be too overwhelming and strong, thus being an auto-remove commander, despite the Group-Hug aspect

@@FasFas160 i actually rebuild my kykar eggs deck and made mono white gandalf. It's not so much egg anymore. Though I love the archetype, it really lends itself to unbearably long turns.

I know it's a little nitpicking, but Rona DOES have flavor text, just on the backside. A little bit cheating because the intention of pointing out that Legendaries rarely have flavor text is to make a point of showing just how much text is on a card nowadays, but I thought I'd point it out!

Zimone and dina is cool, but I'm still bummed that we didn't get a krav, and regna, card. I wanted to know how they were doing.

I love Shalai and Hallar. It's a bummer she's such an easy combo but I feel people that resort to the cheap plays are just unimaginative and lazy. There's so many much more fun and interesting things you can do with her.
Beat all of these easily with Slimefoot and Squee. The best and most underrated Commander of 2023.

Good point with the Shalai and Halar commander; commanders designed for the past few years with “whenever” and other conditional words with capabilities to be infinite with something else are just immediate red flags to discuss before games which can take away from the experience. At this point there’s infinite combo commanders in plenty of colour combinations so it would be nice to depart from combo capabilities or at least have “once each turn” limits added in.
I love 1 per turn limitations just for that reason
Just wanted to say that Sméagol, Helpful Guide does not mill. They reaveal cards and you may steal the lands but the cards are just revealed, not milled.
whenever you're revealing cards they have to go somewhere afterward.

On another note aragorn is really strong for 4 mana, wizards is really ramping up power level drastically and the cards are showing it.
