I’m 49 yrs old and this scene brings me to tears every time!!!! They don’t make em like this anymore. These are the good times I remember as a kid watching Jerry Lewis movies on Sundays after church or Dagwood and blondie movies among others. I get emotional about movies like this and it’s why I prefer the oldies to anything that is new because the comedy was better and the drama movie had dialogue and you had to listen and use your imagination. Well thanks for reading and happy New Year
The film for me is a testament on how we as a society undervalue people. Any body who runs a company, should have this film as required viewing, or even an government agency of any kind. the last line is a true indictment of our society. When the guy asks Lewis, WHY DON'T YOU EVER SAY ANYTHING. His response his truly what is wrong. And the joke is somewhat on the Hotel, who they thank in the end, for help in making the picture.
Every part of this is well done: the set-up, the dialog, the expressions, the sounds (footsteps echo in the huge ballroom). And in the closing line- the guy "breaks the fourth wall" by talking to us right at the camera!Jerry was not just funny. He was a CRAFTSMAN. He paid attention to every little detail. This scene really only take 30 seconds to tell the joke. But Jerry stretches the tension. It fills 2 1/2 minutes.
I remember reading an interview with one of the original writers of Spongebob who talked about him and Stephen Hillenberg watching this scene and Hillenberg turning to him and saying "THAT'S who Spongebob is!"
A sad shame that SpongeBob got ruined as a character. His selective hearing problem got old really quick. He and Patrick have basically become sadists.
What a hysterically classic scene! I clearly remember this from childhood. I remember almost falling off the sofa at the reveal (the room fully loaded with chairs). I can't imagine many directors today setting up a joke like this. That static camera holding for as long as it did as he receded in space was great! Thanks for posting.
One of the funniest scenes in movie history...! I too rolled off the couch when I 1st saw this in the early 70's on Saturday/Sunday late afternoon TV in NJ (Channel 5, 9 or 11 remember...?). My Dad would say back then "watch Jerry Lewis he's sooo funny...!" RIP Jerry Lewis
Hahaha!! That's it! Thank you. For some reason though, it's not the way I remember it. I could have sworn that scene was longer, and he ran back & forth confused, left to right, right to left, until finally the camera cuts, and you see all the chairs set up. Oh well, still funny though, and gets the point across. Thanks AlwayzKickinIt!
You know, I remember it that way too! I remember about 12 chairs set up at first. Damn. Now I gotta research this by finding a different video of this scene. I'D PUT MONEY ON IT THAT YOU ARE RIGHT!

Yet there are too many comments from the usual idiot haters convinced that the man had no talent. Idiots and basically ignorant anti-Semites

Jerry was doing his show at the Fountainblau at the same time in that ballroom in this scene during a 3 month run at the hotel.
Wow! What a great theater. Wonder if Neil Young ever played there?
