Floodgate is stupidly easy tho. It's the previous mission in reverse but with elite allies that spawn with energy swords you can take to one shot flood, flamethrower can delete hordes of flood and the inside sections have lots of upper platforms you can use to completely skip most of the enemies
Lore wise, it's fucking crazy to think the master chief could have possibly done this without dying, really. It would make for amazing blur cinematic movie.
The sure-fire method for getting through any tough halo mission is as follows: 1) Play on Co-op 2) Don't turn on Iron skull 3) Have one person hide in a corner 4) Have one person run out and kill as many enemies as possible until they die 5) Respawn person 6) Repeat steps 3-5 until section is complete 7) Move onto next section
Drinking game: take a shot every time he reminds you that the Flood want to kill you. Hardmode: take an additional shot every time he says you can die fairly quickly.
I wouldn't say Cortana's the hardest Halo mission ever made, but it definitely gets to you psychologically. I never feel safe no matter where I am in that god awful place, and the flood are pretty much endless, as you said. Not to mention I've gotten lost numerous times because the exits or entrances blend in with the map.
Honestly even you stay back to kill all the flood. You can. Bungie placed tons of boxes with new plasma rifles on them and it’s more than enough to kill everything and then some.
I was 7 when a got this game, my first FPS game btw, I was fine with this mission and i returned to it recently and got through it easily though. My strategy was to stab everything because the energy sword one shots all the flood
This mission is easy as long as you duel wield the plasma rifle. Seriously the plasma weapons are super effective against the flood. They give you more than enough plasma rifles to do so, so long as you know where they spawn.
Reclaimer2525 it's shame, plasma rifles shine against the flood especially on this level. It has the best RoF, damage, and range for this mission. It hurts me to see people try to use ranged weapons against the flood.
DayKnightDragon And it's also kind of surprising that so few people do it, considering how many there at in this mission. Glad to see we're on the same page.

Hey! I mentioned a question of "What was the most difficult mission on legendary in Halo 3" on one of his latest live streams, and Luke replied saying it was absolutely the mission Cortana. And now he made a video regarding the same topic! :D
I thought Cortana on legendary was far easier than some other missions in Halo 3. The hardest missions were the ones that had vehicles in them. The Ark on legendary was the hardest of them all, because the vast majority of the game involved tons and tons of vehicles. The part where you reached the scarab and had to fight all those choppers and ghosts and wraiths made me want to tear my hair out. Cortana on the other hand, was kind of relaxing and fun, even on legendary (except for the ranged flood).
What?! I love the Ark! When it came to those vehicle sections I absolutely kicked ass. Even on legendary. Those spiky flood vaginas from cortana deserve to be hated.
The scarab section is pretty easy mate. First tower is way harder. Just fly in circles around the scarabs, shooting their legs. When they get damaged, shoot away the rear playing and go for the kill shot. Repeat twice and let the marines take care of the rest, only pausing momentarily to shoot rockets at banshees and ghosts that try to take you on. Honestly the hornet is pretty op and that’s why the aerial sections of halo 3 suffer for me.
I don't know man.....I feel like the hardest mission EVER was Halo 5's mission that had you fighting 3 Wardens on Legendary.....yeah. I could go back and do Cortana on Legendary with no major problems, it was insane for me as a kid sure, but now I feel like its not as bad as it use to be.....doing it on LASO however is another thing all together.
The Breaking is hard in the worst kind of way, overwhelming you with enemies and severely limiting your ammo supply, while said enemies also force you to stay in one place behind cover and shoot from a distance. While it certainly is difficult, I’d say The Breaking is the worst mission in Halo history. And I definitely don’t think Cortana has the top spot, more like number 2, because the hardest mission in halo on legendary is almost certainly Gravemind. In that mission, the covenant throw the best they have at you, in layouts that give you a severe disadvantage to them (You will die in that first room at least once). The most powerful Covenant units, one after another, never ending until you finish the mission.
@@thegrapethief5514 How bro? Gravemind is hard but at least you can kill the covenant efficiently. On the mission cortana there is a flood thing that morph's into a shooting turret whats the name of that? Does it have a head? How do you kill it without using most of your ammo on legendary. I had to run past most of the sections because I couldn't handle it the amount of times I died...... I've completed every halo mission on legendary even done reach laso, but this mission here is the worst. I shouldn't have to run past sections on a normal legendary run just to complete it.
@@haydencassidy9536 if it tucks into that little ball, don’t bother. It’s nigh invulnerable to plasma, ballistic, or explosive damage in that state. Your best option is either a flamethrower, fire grenade or sword. My suggestion is to always keep plenty of the first handy and keep the last in your back pocket at all times. You’ll need to constantly switch up your armament throughout the mission, but if you find loot caches nearby, they or the flood you kill should have the right tool for whatever job that room demands. Just look around a little. During those hallway bits there should be at least one carbine nearby, or carry one in yourself. 2 shots to the weak point (there should be one in its base, move your reticle until the dot appears if you can’t find where) of those flood ranged forms should kill them on the spot. The noob combo doesn’t work on brutes, Hunters, or sniper jackals. Those are what you will die to the most in Gravemind. That bridge section near the end took me tries that numbered around 50. Gravemind provides all the tools you need if you just look around a little. I remember a cliff in the first room with an SPNKR, and a pile of energy swords begging to be used on the tanks. Just look for the weapons you need and they’ll almost certainly be there.
Fun fact: this was actually suppose to be the second half of floodgate, that is why the corridors look more like Truth and Reconciliation's corridors and also why High Charity has randomly gained some reactors.
Major Chief is that why theres virtually no combat during the Infinite Devil Machine segment of Floodgate? To pace out the game differently & have 3 flood missions instead of 2?
I love the way you did this video is because even if someone barely knew anything about halo they would understand what you’re talking about, even if they haven’t played the game
I recently beat this mission on legendary for the first time since I was a kid. Mainly I just managed to ran past everything. The brute hammer from the previous mission came in handy
Totally agree with what you said about the mission being so much more difficult without the arbiter, especially when you said it's because the flood are excellent at attacking the unwary. Thanks for the guide man :)
I think the fact that the mission is so annoying game play-wise (even though it's a big plot point for the story) makes many players not care enough to try hard. It's like 343 Guilty Spark (the halo 1 multi-layer flood level) but with more beige.
Its really easy to lose your bearings and get turned around, everything looks the same. I swear i think they made it so ridiculous is because the mission "floodgate" wasnt very difficult, so they wanted a tough flood mission like those in CE and H2. good job guys you nailed it
Nitro He's talking out of his arse, cortana is piss easy, and easily done with 0 deaths and even 0 kills. You want the hardest mission across all of the halos like he said this video was about then look no further than halo 2 gravemind. So when I was 7 me and my dad would play Halo 3 together. For about 6 months I thought Cortana was the final mission of the game because my dad had never beaten it, and always refused when I asked to try it. One day, I decided to do it on my own, and after my first attempt, I didn't try again for 3 years. This bloody mission scared the shit out of me!
I still remember at the first time playing this mission at the final part (pelican) i jut grab the flame thrower and start killing every single thing that moves on that zone eventually i got stressed out cause i didnt know were to go, so i decided to see a video guide and notice i could have ended that mission 30 minutes earlier!!!!! That was awful!!! I still have those bad memories every time i play that mission and laugh of myself
I always found dual plasma rifles and an energy sword worked very well for me. The plasma rifles seem to do well against ranged forms and combat forms, plus you don't need to reload. The energy sword is a good backup against tank forms.
Thank you. I am playing Halo 3 again and recall that I had help during this level last time. Playing it on my own was much more difficult. The most difficult thing for me is getting lost in those rooms and hallways!
Brandon Geehan yes same here, I love the flood only when the covenant are involved and I get to see them all fighting together while giving flood certain zones of the mission where they dominate and you see them already finished with kiling the covenant, such as the mission two betrayals or keyes in CE.
I just recently replayed Halo 3 for some nostalgia. I had a heck of a time with Cortana on Heroic difficultly, because for some reason I felt that I should kill all the flood in every room (except for the ‘escape’ part at the end). The wall clingers felt ridiculously tanky when my only gun with ammo was an alien carbine/spiker.
I'm sorry sir, but we don't talk about the library, we don't have it in our database, it seems to have been destroyed by the master chief................. BUT WE WILL NEVER FORGET ;-; (edit) thanks for 9 likes! never thought i would get this many!
Brace Land you really can you don't have to do it alone I did it with my brother and you can beat the levels separately you don't have to it all at once
Omg ur actually my favorite person ever. I have dreaded and hated this level so much and almost skipped it on my recent legendary run. The first time I played it on heroic it took my like an hour. I just beat it on legendary in like 20 min. 🙏
You should check out Halo Completionist's Cortana LASO guide. It made the level fun. I know it's a LASO guide, but the idea is the same. My opinion this guys way of running it is a lot harder. Although I enjoyed almost every LASO level in halo, so this may be easier. idk XD
Disagree, the flood in this game are easy to kill with the exception of the tank forms which are slow and can only melee you. Spikers tend to camp a lot and very rarely move. There are a lot of enemies yes but they always come from one direction, in front of you. They dont spawn behind you to trap you and this means you can always run away.
I remember doing this mission and finishing the game in middle school. Took me waaay longer but no other feeling better than finishing something on that difficulty.
What are you talking about??? This mission on legendary was so easy. Pretty much all of halo 3 on legendary was a piece of cake. Halo 2 on the other hand .....
Great Journey and Quarantine Zone were the most difficult for me, especially with my OCD of having to keep at least 2 allies alive on Quarantine Zone and at least 1 Councilor on The Great Journey.🤣 (On Legendary)
You say that killing all the flood is a mistake, but to get the par score I put on Heroic and a bunch of skulls and killed all of them I never even looked at the timer. I got more then enough points too.
Covenant always gives me the most trouble on legendary play throughs. Those scarabs at the end are so finicky and I always die in strange yet hilarious ways.
It must be fate, but this just popped into my feed and I just beat it on legendary yesterday. My tip is know where the flamethrowers are, they're basically the cheatcodes for pureforms. Also always have a ranged weapon.
Fun fact, I made all of that with out seen that guide, that was on the time when I finish halo 1 to 4 alone in Legendary, it took some time but it was fun.
The days when I kept getting lost on this map and killed on harder difficulty and jeez the atmosphere on this level is spectacular, miss the good old days
One time I set up this mission for LASO as a joke while my friend and his 8 y/o brother were afk, but he told me to start it after seeing my terrible idea. I have no idea how, but we made it through in about 3 hours. The greatest highlight from that was the pure desperation for collecting equipment and hording it in the reactor room, and we were trying to find the last active camo after piling up all the deployable covers only to see his brother say, "you mean this?", while turning invisible.
My strategy every time I play this level: Energy Sword and Grav Hammer. Sword for single targets like tank forms, and grab hammer for larger groups of enemies, resort to shotgun if desperate.
I recently picked up the master chief collection for my xbox one, and I had beat reach and 3 on legendary solo. despite this difficult level, I figured I got through it easily enough, and I was ready for halo 2! ....oooooooh boy was that one a doozey....
Dude, your videos are incredibly good. Very niche subject to make your channel all about halo, but I really enjoy watching your videos. Im curious, have you complete the vidmaster's for halo 3 and odst?
Recently played the game for the first time on Heroic. The flood generally isn't bad, but those ranged forms were annoying as hell. Sometimes it feels like they don't register damage properly. I remember shooting one Stalker form in the back with a carabine across the reactor room. Because I was so far it didn't do anything, but I empties all of the carabine ammo I had into it (about 50 shots) and it still didn't die.

I'm sorry sir, but we don't talk about the library, we don't have it in our database, it seems to have been destroyed by the master chief.................
BUT WE WILL NEVER FORGET ;-;
(edit) thanks for 9 likes! never thought i would get this many!
Delta Dragon YT that mission is easy lol if u know how to play it
God this takes me back. I grew up on Halo, and this mission was hell on Legendary.
Cortana is a cake walk compared to Gravemind in Halo 2 on Legendary I beat halo 3 and 2 in under 3 hours Cortana was not bad at all
Joshua LeMay physically impossible
Goose 22 I really did lol the achievements I unlocked in the master chief Collection we're called Monopolized and the other one was Devastating
You literally cannot beat halo 3 legendary in under 3 hours it's impossible
Brace Land you really can you don't have to do it alone I did it with my brother and you can beat the levels separately you don't have to it all at once
Brace Land not if u keep practicing
You know-- man, i couldn't figure this one out for myself, thank God have someone to ramble on for over 10+ minutes to tell us why!
cortana was more creepy and annoying for me...never really had an issue even on higher difficulties. Creepy as hell though.
Somehow I missed this video, but holy hell! It made me your rival on the MCC timer. Sweet!
This is the mission she keeps interrupting gameplay with those little audio blips right? I fucking hated this mission.
Very good video, I never struggled with this level but these are great tips!
I remember my first broken controller attempting this on Legendary.
I broke my controller on The Maw legendary :/ I am ashamed but that's what happened lmfao
Although I enjoyed almost every LASO level in halo, so this may be easier. idk XD
Love you Luke
love you more
Luke TheNotable not possible😘
No homo
Great tactis you are AMAZING
Keep making the best Halo content
i remember playing this for hours #hammerjumps
I think you forgot something: As long as you have a friend, the Arbiter will always be with you.
Tank forms die in one swipe from an energy sword, and because the sword lunges from a distance, they have no time to retaliate.
I disagree. I would always try to go fast and end up in a corner with an energy sword on my last stand
@@xavierrenegadeangel1356 a brute shot melee can kill the tanks in one hit.
Gabriel Garcia that’s only on easy
I remember playing this mission all the time as a kid and I don't have any memories of frustration. Maybe I need to play through again
I thought the picture on the video was ispiteful
I remember doing this mission and finishing the game in middle school. Took me waaay longer but no other feeling better than finishing something on that difficulty.
Listen dude you gotta stop saying if you're smart enough to do so
This isn't smarts it's foresight.
That hallway with all the long range flood on the walls and roof
U can get gud
Fax
The first mission in Halo 3 and Cortana were 2 of my most favorite missions on legendary 'specially in coop
What are you talking about??? This mission on legendary was so easy. Pretty much all of halo 3 on legendary was a piece of cake.
Halo 2 on the other hand .....
HaloFanSince04 but were you playing alone ?
I played halo 3 on legendary alone......
JACKAL SNIPERS!
Great Journey and Quarantine Zone were the most difficult for me, especially with my OCD of having to keep at least 2 allies alive on Quarantine Zone and at least 1 Councilor on The Great Journey.🤣 (On Legendary)
HaloFanSince04 I agree with you on that regarding Cortana.
The explosions in the Reactor room have launched me off that platform so many times
Guys, obviously Osiris is the hardest mission in all the Halos.
Nah, "Before the Storm" takes the cake on that.
No way "Arrival" is ridiculously difficult
The Heretic is god-tier
I agree, it’s so hard
No mission is harder than "prepare to drop"
You say that killing all the flood is a mistake, but to get the par score I put on Heroic and a bunch of skulls and killed all of them I never even looked at the timer. I got more then enough points too.
I thought “The Covenant” was the hardest mission. 😒
TribalFaller
Unless you know how to kick ass with vehicles.
NCR Elite Riot Officer I can kick ass with a tank with spartan laser/rocket launcher marines in the side.
Covenant always gives me the most trouble on legendary play throughs. Those scarabs at the end are so finicky and I always die in strange yet hilarious ways.
cortana is harder below legendary but on legendary covenant is way harder.
so many memories are flowing back
Beat it in 5
On easy
Dark metallic adolescents No lies I did to
It must be fate, but this just popped into my feed and I just beat it on legendary yesterday. My tip is know where the flamethrowers are, they're basically the cheatcodes for pureforms. Also always have a ranged weapon.
It wasn't hard the thing was it was just long and boring for me.
Fun fact, I made all of that with out seen that guide, that was on the time when I finish halo 1 to 4 alone in Legendary, it took some time but it was fun.
Bull shit I completed this when I was 3 and the worst thing was me always getting lost
Drastic Ethan8 i started then to and my problem was being scared and he said that cortina was purple it's not halo 1 anymore😂😂
Oh God, I got so stuck on this mission when I played it. It made me HATE the flood! But when you finally escape it's pretty satisfying.
I have Halo 3 it's a really great game I never played the first 2 but still my love for Halo and it's story is huge
Another great video Luke, but wait you already knew that didn't you?
Nostalgia. Me and my buddy spent so much time on this level.
I really like this channel alot
Love these level videos!!
The days when I kept getting lost on this map and killed on harder difficulty and jeez the atmosphere on this level is spectacular, miss the good old days
Why Cortana is such a hard mission, my patience runs out before my ammo. Thanks for slowing me down Cortana!
My brother and i played a lot of cortana when we were like 8, very nostalgic
Very useful for beginners like me. Good tips
One time I set up this mission for LASO as a joke while my friend and his 8 y/o brother were afk, but he told me to start it after seeing my terrible idea. I have no idea how, but we made it through in about 3 hours. The greatest highlight from that was the pure desperation for collecting equipment and hording it in the reactor room, and we were trying to find the last active camo after piling up all the deployable covers only to see his brother say, "you mean this?", while turning invisible.
the brute shot blade is just as effective as the sword, and never runs out.
Flood: exists
Flamethrower:so you have chosen death
My strategy every time I play this level: Energy Sword and Grav Hammer. Sword for single targets like tank forms, and grab hammer for larger groups of enemies, resort to shotgun if desperate.
I replayed the whole campaign in heroic and this level made me cry
I recently picked up the master chief collection for my xbox one, and I had beat reach and 3 on legendary solo. despite this difficult level, I figured I got through it easily enough, and I was ready for halo 2!
....oooooooh boy was that one a doozey....
Definitely one of my favorite missions
this is one of my favorite halo missions simply because it's the only time we've seen a place that 90% flood converted
Dude, your videos are incredibly good. Very niche subject to make your channel all about halo, but I really enjoy watching your videos. Im curious, have you complete the vidmaster's for halo 3 and odst?
Slaps roof of mission: This baby can fit so many flood in here.
You explain this like a person explaining how to do any destiny raid on the 390 light difficulty
Watched this video, gave me flashbacks of long nights with my cousin trying to beat this mission.
I was 7 when I played Halo 3 for the first time. I wasn’t ready.
Oh, good. I thought there were no youtubers who play universal reclaimer. I’m comforted
