If we count protagonists not from mafia series then throw Dominic from The Godfather 2 between Lincoln and Tommy

I'd disagree that vito gets a knock thats hes less interesting without joe, but tommy without his boys isnt. The type of relationships the protagonists have in 1 and 2 are directly related to the narrative the game is trying to tell so joe is going to feel more important to telling vito's story, but id argue tommy and vito aren't too dissimilar in they individual characterizations.

  • @MasonPayneJericho

Comparing OG Tommy and DE Tommy. Well, in my opinion OG Tommy Angelo was just better. He always had that "innocent aura" around him, even though he was a gangster. And I find it kinda funny that DE Tommy dislikes killing animals, because when I look at him and his personality, I'd think that he would sooner shoot a dog than OG Tommy.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that (for me) the main thing about Mafia 1 was Tommy Angelo's story and his way of dealing with the mob life and it's hardships. That he actually didn't want to become a mafiosi, but he was forced into it. That there were occasions, when he didn't want to do a certain job (killing a friend or a woman), so he was hesitant. And of course he paid a hard price for it.
And Hangar 13 just messed this up in the remake with the way how they portrayed Tommy and how they changed/switched up scenes for no reason! They totally murdered the original game's message!
Sure, as a game, a sort of "different adaptation" I liked it, but it's sure as hell that it won't be the "definitive" Mafia 1 for me!
Back to topic, Lincoln was a hell of a fine character, imo! I liked him just as much as OG Tommy!
Vito was a bit boring for me (mainly because he joined the mob only for selfish reasons mostly), but none the less, he's good too.

I always thought of the protagonists as Neutral Alignment with Tommy Angelo as Lawful Neutral (due to to him confiding with the authorities to protect his own family), Vito Scaletta as True Neutral (due to him defecting allegiances such as him killing Clemente then Falcone), and Lincoln Clay as Chaotic Neutral (using destructive means to exact vengeance against Sal Marcano).

  • @rhysoneill7399
    @rhysoneill7399 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Vito is my favourite he didn't become a mobster because of evil reasons done it for his family.
Plus leaving new bordeaux to Vito at the end of 3 is the best ending dude basically turns it into something good whilst the rest flood it with drugs and leads to wars.
    Then I'd say Lincoln
Dude is loyal even to people that were uneasy partners he joined the mob because he had nowhere else to go.
Tommy is the lowest because he loved the mob life when it suited Him then turned rat.

I personally rank Lincoln Clay at number 1, mainly because I judge them on how sympathetic they are to me. Lincoln could have stayed out of the criminal life entirely if Sal Marcano hadn't double crossed Sammy, and the only reason Lincoln even enters the world of the mafia is to stop this absolute monster and find some justice for the death of his adopted family. His crusade against the Marcanos might have caused mayhem across New Bordeaux, but given that many of his non-mafia victims are virulent racists, crooked politicians and complacent elites, I have no sympathy for them. It probably even makes Lincoln a warrior for justice he never intended to be. True, it is possible for Lincoln to completely cross the line near the end, but then karmic retribution is close behind. And this completely depends on whether you listen to Donovan. Even the 'neutral' ending has Lincoln do some good with his criminal earnings. But him being able to walk away, and do what he originally had planned and move to California allows him to make the most moral choice out of all three. And prevents him from ending up as badly as Vito or Tommy.
Tommy is my number 2 pick, because he also never wanted to join the mafia. It's only when he doesn't see a way out that he fully joins the Salieri gang. Even then, he does the most moral thing on several occasions, sparing people that the rules say have to die. Tommy doesn't let his enjoyment of the money and power override his conscience. What knocks him down in rank though is his ultimately fatal decision to join Paulie's bank robbery. Even if Salieri was getting greedy, the mafia is not a partnership. Tommy wasn't "owed" anything, and he went rogue. He does redeem himself in the end by accepting the deal that Detective Norman is able to arrange, even at a cost.
Which leaves Vito at 3. He's a very enjoyable character, and the bromance with Joe is quite the heartwarming tale. But Vito is the only one who entered the criminal life for selfish reasons. Yes, the instigating event is to help pay off his father's loanshark. But Vito was already heavily involved in crime before that, and would have ended up getting involved with Joe's business either way. This makes him the most selfish of the three, looking at the mafia as a shortcut to money and the easy life. Not exactly a very noble goal. Which isn't to say he's irredeemably bad. He's still incredibly loyal to his friends and family, to a fault. Like Tommy, he breaks the rules on numerous occasions in order to stand by the people he cares about, and turns on those who wronged him. Such as when he guns down Derek, even though the sane course of action would have been to not start trouble with the Vincis when he's already started a mob war between the triads, Falcones and Vincis and is several dozen grand in debt. We get the impression Vito wasn't very close to his father when he was alive, but he obviously didn't turn a blind eye to his killers once the truth came out. And he gets his chance to thump his nose at the mafioso of both the Marcano family and the Commission when he joins Lincoln Clay, even some payback against the people he believed killed Joe. So even when he takes the bronze, Vito is still solid.

Tommy Angelo is by far the worst protag of the 3 for a few reasons. He is boring when compared to the other two, with a cookie cutter archtype of a mob rat, (oh no my family, these guys betrayed me). Compare that to Vito the unsung Mob soldier who realizes the life he has idolized and fell to is the one that took everything he cared for, then there is Lincoln, whos revenge story manages to be very engaging in spite of the repetitive gameplay loop. On top of that the story direction of mafia 3 trumps mafia 1 and the remake even though mafia 1 has a tighter written story. Why do i say that? Because Lincoln comes off as multi dimentional with the other non mafia/crime aspects of his life still having a satisfying impact with his mafia conflict. Tommy on the other hand just falls into everything rather quickly and feels like a blank slate or vehicle to watch the other characters around him, he just feels so damn bland. Another plus for mafia 3 is the reactive cutscenes, how Sal and Georgie react differently depending on what order u decide to deconstruct their empire.

plus back then video games barely even had a coherent story, I mean look at GTA III's story and that franchise is the titan of this genre, and the fact that most Mafia fans disagree with you, it should have been a clean sweep for Mafia 3 since by the time 2016 was around most AAA games were almost a movie and it still has to compete with a 2002 game where you can barely fit 30 2 minute cutscenes in the whole game
