My husband was on the construction crew that built the Rawlins House, on Newport Harbor, not the ocean. Upon their deaths, he also refreshed the home to prepare it for sale. It was the next door neighbor who surprised Mr. and Mrs. Rawlins when he put large, shark teeth around the opening, hence the house being named the "Jaws" house, not because of the shape. The beautiful wooden sink in the downstairs bathroom was hand carved by T. Duncan Stewart, the general contractor who built the home. The Rawlins family supported the symphonic arts and held concerts in their home. The orange couch is actually modular so that it would become individual seating for concert guests.
Thanks for your reaction. Great to read that your husband helped to built the amazing house. Yes, I knew about the shark teeth around the opening, but for me personally the house looks a bit like a shark with it's grey colours and big ''mouth like'' opening. So I guess there was a reason why they choose to put the teeth in the house: they already thought that it looked like a shark. I also knew that it's next to newport beach, but the ocean is right behind it. Thanks for sharing your story about the symphonic concerts, I didn't knew that! I would love to visit a concert in this house, it would be a great place for concerts.
Great presentation. I used to live across the bay from this house on the peninsula and would walk past it often. They would leave the curtains open in the evening and you could see right in to the living room and kitchen. My dad would say "who would want to live in a fish bowl like that?"
Haha.... At night with the open curtains you can indeed look right into the livingroom, having not so much privacy. Thanks that you admire my presentation.
Mostly simplicity on the outside that is easily visible. Then, the magic of John Lautner takes place in every way to making it a living spectacular experience. Thx to him and to the documentarian.
The house looks so simple, but is yet so complex when you look closer. That's what I like so much about Lautner: each house is full of surprises. That why I love making these videos : you discover all the great details by researching the houses. Thank that you like the videos so much, more will come up, but it takes a lot of time to make them, so terefore I haven't uploaded any of them the passing three months. Next month the firs of a new serie of videos will be uploaded.
Yes, I think it's one of the most underestimated and least known houses by Lautner. I'm glad so many people watch the video to know the house better, it deserves more attention.
Love your very descriptive videos. Lautner homes are intriguingly clever and able to provide such a rich living experience in very small footprint. Modern but homey. So beautiful. The more recent modern homes where I live in Malibu are often stark and cold and cookie cutter boring I feel. Thank you for sharing these.
Thank you that you admire my videos so much. Sorry for the late reaction (after three months) but I forgot to respond to your reaction. Yes the houses by John Lautner are so clever and rich. Therefore I love to make these videos. Great that you live in Malibu, I live at the other side of the Atlantic ocean, in the Netherlands.
the channel starts again with a new series of videos. The first video about Fallingwater by F.L Wright is available now th-cam.com/video/2CjANCkhfHI/w-d-xo.html Many more videos about Lautner and Wright will come up in a few months .
Definitely a house that’s the product of a creative mind! Lots of interesting details. Nice also to see that it’s occupied by Mid-Century Modern enthusiasts, as evidenced by the choice of furniture and books. Thanks for the informative and stylishly presented video tour. :)
Haha... Funny that you recognised that it was inhabited by mid century enthousiast based on the choice of books in the photos! (I hadn't noticed that yet ;) Yest I also love the details in the houses by John Lautner, they are so rich of inventions and so creative.
This home is about 15 miles away from where I live now. When we were younger' we would roller skate on Balboa Island and skate past this home. I have several friends that live on Balboa Island and while it is nice, it is quite crowded, and parking is (when visiting) is very hard to find. We will typically park a mile or so away in a shopping center and ride bikes the rest of the way. If you can't afford a home here it is nice to friends that can...
Okay inice to read you fond youth memories. If I had a lot of money I would built this house and place in on another location. Balboa Island is much to narrow and to crowded for me. Low watersports though...

There is a John Lautner lecture online. The video quality is low, he uses a slide projector and it's in black and white. The pictures of the houses etc.... look like blobs. One suggestion is to take that lecture video ( in two parts) and add color images of the architecture etc... so it becomes clear what he is discussing.
Great idea!!! Thank you! Yes I have saw the lecture by John Lautner and yes it was very bad quality. I can do it in the way you describe. But it will be a video that is a lot of work, it demands a lot of research. But in the future I will do that, first I will finish some other videos that I've already prepared.
Amazing like always.. Waiting for the next masterpiece .. Thanks to Mister Cornelius for good yob , maybe would be nice to show another mid century architects with, as much as possible, similar style like my favorite and one of a kind ,John Lautner.. Regards from Vienna
Thank you for your appriciation. Yes, i'm intending to make some videos about Frank Lloyd Wright in the future, but first I want to finish some videos about houses by John Lautner. Regards from The Netherlands :)
Yes it looks like a ship with it's mouth open towards the ocean. And yes the houses is similar to the Stevens house and very different at the same time.

What a fantastic house. The ceiling and the wooden sinks are outstanding, and like nothing I've ever seen.
I wonder how those sinks were made and how durable they are. They look amazing for sure. The house is beautifull designed to the smallest detail.
Another Lautner masterpiece and wonderfully presented by your tour! Thank you again!
Yes, I think it's one of the most underestimated and least known houses by Lautner. I'm glad so many people watch the video to know the house better, it deserves more attention.
This house is a Masterpiece,I walk past is all the time.
Yes, its a house unlike any other. we need more strange houses like this one. When I walk over the streets most houses look the same.
That couch is simply DIVINE.
Yes I also love it. It's very expensive however
You have the perfect voice for these videos. Thank you for this wonderful channel.
Thank you! Not everybody says that to me, sometimes people complain about my Dutch accent. Haha! Always try to improve my English language skills.
@@SuperJobbel your accent is what makes it so cool!

Thanks so much for making these great videos. They are fantastic!

@@SuperJobbel Good Idea to finish J.Lautner first..
Good video, not so good music at such a loud level.
As genius as the Stevens hause but totaly diffrent yet same type of lot… like a stranded ship

I don't know what they're called, but when it's closed up it looks like a very large telescope should be coming out of it at night
Nice comment. I didn't saw the similarity with the telescope, but I can see what you mean. Thanks! :)
