  • On June 6th, 2019, intermodal train 25z derailed at Swanton, Ohio, taking out both mainlines. In the days that followed, a parade of trains would ensue on an already busy Chicago Line.

I love RJ Corman. Short line operators and rail problem solvers. I especially love them as a flatbed trucker. They operate a warehouse for Logan aluminum in Kentucky. They are so much faster and more friendly to load at. As opposed to the crappyness of loading at the aluminum mill.

I counted 10 seconds in between the automobile being struck and the air brakes finally going into emergency from derailment and about 8 seconds before the RPM load on the engine starts to drop. These railroads and their habits of blaming the crews really does come back and bite them in the ass as crews refuse to throttle down or apply air before or immediately after the strike.

According to the report it didn't derail until the car that was being dragged hit the crossover further down from the crossing where the car was hit. The car got stuck enough to pull the train off the tracks at that point.

The priority of the train company was to get the line moving. Do to the backlog of trains that had to wait, many trains were moving close together such that clearing the wreckage could not be accomplished. Given that this is a busy line scheduling a crew to have enough time to remove the wreckage. I wonder how long it took and were the homeowners frustrated by this.

I think that footage is contributed by other people there at the time with their phones and they saw the inevitable crash about to happen when the car was left on the tracks with a train coming and started recording. I'm just really amazed at how many people walked toward the train while it was dragging a car down the rails. You really don't want to be near a train when it's certainly going to derail!

  • @jre617

Some of the best rail footage on TH-cam.
You don't need to show the entire train though. You can edit out the middle of unit trains, including stack trains (manifest trains may be an exception). Also, zooming is bad in train videos, though you do zoom pretty subtly. Long shots can be good, but then cut to normal FL, rather than zoom. I really appreciate your commentary on the area, the history of the line, the train itself. It really helps. Thanks

A Delta woman was sentenced Friday in Fulton County Common Pleas Court to two years of community control for her involvement in the June train derailment in Swanton.
Logan Guess, 26, previously pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while intoxicated and interference with the operation of a train.
According to authorities, Guess abandoned her Chevy Tahoe after it became stuck or disabled on railroad tracks near Main Street. The Tahoe was struck by a westbound Norfolk Southern train at approximately 10:17 p.m. on June 6, causing the derailment of 13 train cars and 2 locomotives between Main Street and Munson Road and damage to five nearby passenger cars struck by debris from the crash.
In addition to two years of community control, Judge Jeffrey L. Robinson ordered Guess to pay prosecution costs, stay out of bar and taverns, not possess or consume alcohol, abide by an 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew, and complete the Driving Intervention Program. Her license will be suspended one year, and once suspension is complete, will have restricted plates on her vehicle and be assessed and complete any treatment recommendations by Harbor.

It doesn't matter if you hit the emergency brakes, when
The train is going at track speed it takes at least 2 miles to come to a full stop.
And the crews are taught to
never throw the train in emergency brake cause it will cause more damage than it's worth. It's better to
      apply the brake evenly and
      Briing the train stop.

How do locomotives with les hp work with one that has more?! Won’t the lesser hp locomotive burn out, or how does it not?! Seems like it would drag and or over work!

Mike, think of it like a bunch of guys pushing a heavy car. One guy pushing not as hard will just make car move slower. With locomotives, one can actually be shut down or idling and it's not a problem, the others just push or pull it along. The wheels are driven by electric traction motors, which move freely when not powered.

Great video as usual. I enjoy all of your videos & have subscribed. Some video photographers, offer mugs 🍺, for sale, to support the channeril. I am a big coffee ☕ drinker, and will gladly buy one, if you have them available.

But what in this otherwise fine video has anything to do with levees? Wouldn’t a reference to derailment be more informative and attract more views?
