    This 1983 song was their only radio hit in the US, but their lead singer Limahl had a hit the following year with the title song from a movie soundtrack, mentioned elsewhere in the comments.

    That drum sound is called "Gated reverb" invented and made popular by Phil Collins after he left Genesis

    • @josephdolman

      It was actually when he was recording the drums for intruder for peter gabriel I believe.

    • @chucku00
      @chucku00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, he didn't left Genesis, he just made some solo albums, then came back to Genesis when they made their "Invisible touch" album in 1986, way after Kajagoogoo splitted.
      And Joseph is right, the gated reverb drum was used by Phil collins with Peter Gabriel "Intruder" in 1979, before Genesis recorded the "Duke" album with Phil collins.
      Anyway, the drums on "Too shy" sound more like Simmons elctronic drums than gated reverb drums. They were really a staple of 1980's pop scene.

    New wave funky, poppy punk band, typical synth heavy band of the late '70s, '80s, early '90s. Fun band from Germany or UK. This was a big hit. They also had other good videos, songs like "Ooh To be Ah", see that video! I was a child when they were big, '80s. Singer Limahl also sang "The Neverending Story" duet with a female singer, for that movie, same title. See the video. Also a big song.

    19 year-old bass player, Nick Beggs, now playing bass with Howard Jones. So odd to have heard this in the 8os, because while it was pop, it was super complex. This song was produced by Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, who came up with the middle 8. Brilliant song, one of the real gems of the 80s.. they broke up shortly afterwards…because they didn’t get along with the singer, Limahl. But they did have a reunion in VH1, in the 90s or early 2000s. Worth watching on TH-cam.

    Hadn't heard this track for many many years until I stumbled across this video. And wow, yes it's a great pop song, but with much older ears I now appreciate just how brave & complex it is as a pop song. Yes it's got a great vocal & pop hooks all the way through, but how many pop songs these day start with a killer jazz-bass run for 46 seconds before the main vocal comes in?! And have a complex minor key main verse, before a huge chord change to the bridge and another huge chord change to the vocal?! And a middle 8 with Fripp-esque guitars??! Hats off.

    Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes helped Kajagoogoo sign with Duran Duran's record label and then Nick Rhodes, at the age of 21, co-produced Kajagoogoo's first album and this song, "Too Shy" with Colin Thurston, who produced Duran Duran's self-eponymous debut album and their follow up to it, Rio. Before Duran Duran had their first #1 song in the U.K., "Is There Something I Should Know?" on March 26, 1983, which also debuted at #1, a rare feat back in the day. Nick Rhodes produced Kajagoogoo's Too Shy to #1 on February 19, 1983- before Duran Duran had ever reached the top spot.
