The solo from 5.05 to 5.55 is superlative to all others (except maybe the one on Hollow Years or perhaps Best of Times or In the Name of God or...) Petrucci is simply brilliant...
Nice to see other s giving this solo attention. That divebomb to the depths of hell was perfect. This is also my top 3 alongside Barstool and Constant motion
salute for Dream Theater, John Petrucci, John Myung, Jordan Rudess, James Labrie, and Mike Mangini (Mike Portnoy, Derek Sherinian , kevin moore, Charlie Dominici, and chris collins) you all my influences in music since childhood my father always play the songs Dream Theater, I remember dream theater song that was first entered into my ear that song called "home", and I started looking about Dream Theater, to this day I still enjoy a great melody touch in Dream Theater love Dream Theater
That Guitar Solo is Sick,,, Dude,,, it's not always about can someone plays it,,, it's sometimes about 'what the hell was John Petrucci thinking when he made that solo,,,' This song is one of the strongest DT has ever made,,,
+Rick Feith You're sort of right. Most of the comps he's done recently that are on 6-string are at least Eb. If he IS playing in standard E, it's usually on his 7-string running BEADGBE. But you are right, most of his riffs are anywhere between D-E standard. But some songs get down on that BEADGC on his Baritone model guitars, like "The Bigger Picture."
Stream of Consciousness is the only DT song that comes to mind for Eb. He has used a 7 string on every album since AWAKE, along with C standard & Baritone here and there. But I firmly stand behind my comment that he can write modern heavy guitar parts on a standard E tuned guitar with 10-46 strings.
I completely agree. I just wanted to make sure you remember that he rarely does truly write in standard E. Regardless, he is quite the composer and musician. Cheers
When I hear the intro, I feel like I'm in a forgotten forrest millions of years back in time. The silence is broken only by the distant calls of ancient, nameless birds. The peaceful silence is everywhere. The fluttering sound of the wings of gigantic odonatas through the dense forrest suddenly drowns in a massive cacophony as a gigantic predator blasts through the underwood in hunt for food.
This album is a masterpiece, even by DT standards. This is them at the top of their game for sure. The skill level isnt even human anymore. It's Alien.
The whole album is great. Since Scenes From A Memory, I feel they got used to compose thinking in virtuosism, not in music itself. But in this album, I feel a DT playing music for music again!!!
+EnD Cygnus This is literally the exact opposite of the truth. This is definitely their worst album since When Dream And Day Unite, and it makes me so sad that they can't create original great songs any more. Let alone the horrible sound and non existent songwriting by Jordan Rudess and Portnoy's departure that have made things even worse.
+Ioannis Kostopoulos You're a moron. If you don't think Enemy Inside or Enigma Machine, or Illumination Theory isn't some of the best playing you've ever heard, then you don't know music my friend. Go learn how to music. The new album is trash i'll give you that, but this one rapes face.
EnD Cygnus By the fact that you need to resort to personal comments, I can tell that perhaps you're a little salty. The songs you mentioned are let's say... adequate and somewhat interesting. I also like the Looking Glass a lot. The rest are CRAP. And this comes from someone who loved their music for 15 years.
Probably we won't hear such an album from DT ever again. This is them at their very top. It was such a welcome pleasure to hear 'em back to their original roots, focusing ond MUSIC instead of vistuosism.
The intro (up to 1:22 ) reminds me of the Talos Principle's soundtrack, but as soon as those heavy guitars and drums kick in I get woken up for sure! Love it!
Holy fuck this intro. Listened this song like 20 times but every time... Every single time it gives me chills. Sounds so beautiful and makes my imagination fly. Good job Jordan Rudess, I'm pretty sure that it's made with his MorphWiz. Amazing.
Okay, i know many, many, many people will dislike me today and tomorrow, but WITH THIS ALBUM, I find back Dream Theater. I thought they were lost with aDToE, but definitively, when you give enough time to Dream Theater to make an album, they do awesome stuff.
This song is easily one of the best they have done in modern times. It's a shame they apparently didn't play it at all on the last tour. That guitar solo is stupendous.
I'm in love with the airy, synth lead @ 0:47-1:21 I want to recreate it for personal use but I'm having trouble discovering what fundamental properties it consists of. I'm sure the real thing is some sort of modified Korg patch that Jordan created/modified, but I am trying to make it myself using oscillators and outboard effects. Any advice? So far I have speculated that it is obviously several voices with a certain light-overdrive, HP filters, light attack, and portamento/pitch bend. But nothing I have created sounds quite right at all.
It sounds kinda "vocal". I'm not an expert but to achieve this "vocal" effect , I would try adding some filters that modulate the mid frequencies and mess with square waves, or some LFO with very fast rate, and everything else you already said.
This album is not "overly" metal at all. They have harder tracks but all in all I think this album is very progressive rock with metal elements. Now, Train of Thought is an "overly" metal album.
Actually i would think it is more tied to the Elizabeth Smart story where she was kidnapped and forced to wear a face-veil to conceal her identity. There was one time where she came close to being rescued when a detective started questioning her and her kidnapper but citing religious reasons, the detective was not allowed to lift the veil and thus he walked away. It fits the chorus too perfectly
I really feel DT 12 is some sort of a concept album. And theme is Surrendering to the will of fate. If you check the songs Surrender to reason, Along for the ride and illumination Theory those songs discuss the concept of surrender
i am not a Megadeth fan at all, but music is not only about technical skills...and trust me, Marty Friedman(guitarist of the golden age of Megadeth), is of equal abilities to Petrucci
Yanoé Samson Go listen to the song Octavarium, it literally sounds like Mustaine makes an appearance on it near the end. And on Honor Thy Father I think he has a whole Zack De La Rocha thing going haha It's great
5:41 - 6:19
the way they used that riff for the chorus melody and the backing synth strings to drive it forward is truly genius
Its great to hear that they finally let the bass to be audible. The whole band sounds just huge now.
Despite the bass be more audible, the whole album is a little overproduced...
Carlos Alberto R.N da Costa Not just a little !
Yes and Mike is a monster the best drummer I know 😱
@@franckamec4156 , true.
I will miss him in the band.
I am addicted to this...it has every thing, power, emotion, aggretion, melody, technique.
Petrucci's solo just smashes through the brain my Lord what a sound..

The keyboard intro is one of the most beautiful things I've heard in my whole life...

+Ron Fleig I totally agree, It's in my TOP 3 all time DT solos!
+Ron Fleig top 3 Hollow years Japan, Behind the veil, and Through her eyes NY version.
Nice to see other s giving this solo attention. That divebomb to the depths of hell was perfect. This is also my top 3 alongside Barstool and Constant motion

Daniel Laua what’s up with the commas wtf? 😂😂
@@istolethisaccount Com,ma,t, me, bro
Octavarium would like to have a word with you.
I can't find a single thing to complain about in this album, I truly can't. Not one!
The snare is the only thing I complain about. I love absolutely everything else about it
You actually appreciate that first minute?
@@Metalton95yes its cool shut up 🙄
@@Metalton95the first minute is the best part for me
I can see why Dream Theater included the helicopter in the video because that's what Mike Mangini's drumming sounds like. He's so fast.
Fast? Hmm...
Go listen to Archspire! 🙂
@@postthraumaticheamnesia exactly ! haha
Isn't this song from the Portnoy era?
Daniel Andrei Rusu yeah, I was thinking the same...
Also, Petrucci's shredding.
This album is fantastic
DT skills are like a machine
One of their best opening 2 and a 1/2 minutes ever for a song. The chorus, IMO, right there with any of their best chorus' they have written.
I love how JP can write modern heavy guitar parts without having to tune everything down. Some of the best DT tunes are in standard E.
+Rick Feith You're sort of right. Most of the comps he's done recently that are on 6-string are at least Eb. If he IS playing in standard E, it's usually on his 7-string running BEADGBE. I believe Root of All Evil is in Eb as well.
That is correct. Eb tuning Key of F.

+EnD Cygnus Who cares for the playing when the songwriting is mediocre.
Ears, your good time has come...
it is my favorite band actually
I like the metal side of Dream Theater but I also love their light side. A band able to do both is a great band in my book.
THE LEVEL OF MUSICALITY HERE IT'S OVER 9000!
One of their best intros incorporating sound design layering. Pure angelic beauty.
that's a freaking good solo, I'm blown away.
The SOLO is one of DT's ALL time Best! Amazing work!!! \m/
2:56 I like how the guitar sounds here... :D Dream Theater is one of my favourite bands...hello everyone...
I love DT. This music is incredible and I identified that the beginning sounds like "Alone" from Judas Priest`s Nostradamus album. Awsome.
Probably we won't hear such an album from DT ever again. This is them at their very top. It was such a welcome pleasure to hear 'em back to their original roots, focusing ond MUSIC instead of vistuosism.
yes and thank fuck for that..
The intro (up to 1:22 ) reminds me of the Talos Principle's soundtrack, but as soon as those heavy guitars and drums kick in I get woken up for sure! Love it!
This song is completely underrated.
Amazing album. I've listened to DT from the beginning, and I would place this on a list of their best work.
Holy fuck this intro. Listened this song like 20 times but every time... Every single time it gives me chills. Sounds so beautiful and makes my imagination fly.
Good job Jordan Rudess, I'm pretty sure that it's made with his MorphWiz. Amazing.
Thene same here mate! The Intro is a catapult to another world
This could be my favorite DT album ever. At least it was the album that got me into Dream Theater
It's surprising how much this album has really grown on me. Keep thinking of "Sacrificed Sons" at 0:30 though
DT is band for musicians,I like this harmonys and JP solos and this stiles...amazing music
behind the veil and surrender to reason are the most beautiful track i ever listen...
Still come back to this song.
MY FACE MELTED AT PETRUCI'S SOLO. so fantastic!!!!!!!
kangooroo1 relax dude. He just spelled his name wrong. That‘s easy ✌🏻

ADTOE is probably their finest effort.
That's a great song and at 1:50 I get goosebumps. But that's literally just the beginning
One of my fav, this song is literally masterpiece. listen THAT bass sound! my heart is crushed by that
i love the guitar solo of this song... great feel.
This song is easily one of the best they have done in modern times. It's a shame they apparently didn't play it at all on the last tour. That guitar solo is stupendous.
This song is amazing once you learn what it's about! I love this band!!!!
One of the best on this album.
This album is a great focused release from Dream Theater. Good melodies & songwriting with just the right amount of wanking off. Good stuff!
I'm in love with the airy, synth lead @ 0:47-1:21

The intro riff reminds me of the good old days of Majesty (Vital Star etc.). Really great. The Bass and Keyboard sounds are really great too.
When all things fall apart DT once again rise from the ashes and take us back to their original sounds!... they never seize to amaze us.
Great song. From 4:45 to 5:54 is amazing!
this solo is awesome ......OMG !!!
This album is not "overly" metal at all. They have harder tracks but all in all I think this album is very progressive rock with metal elements. Now, Train of Thought is an "overly" metal album.
Great song. Loved it. Didn't actually cared for DT for so long but this album is not bad at all. Nice job. The best solo in the album.

Guitar Solo of the Year!!!!!!
I love the intro of this song. Its so strong!
just like all other album a nice master piece of prog metal
i enjoy so much of this album
Thank you for putting up so many songs from the album to check out. Enemy Inside almost made me skip this one, but now I'm almost convinced to get it.
best band ever:)!!!!
After led zeppelin
This is a great great great piece of music!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you guys!!!
This would be so good to open a show with
Amazing song one of my favorites of this Album
Legit. This album is good.
Personally, I don't really like this album but this song, love it.
Best song!!
Few days more this guys will play in Chile yeah!
and the happiness arrives !
I can't stop listening to this.
I love how the beginning of this ties in with The Embracing Circle in Illumination Theory...
I really feel DT 12 is some sort of a concept album. And theme is Surrendering to the will of fate.

2:13 - 2:30, maybe some "black album" vibe, if it was in straight 4/4.
I love this song!
U could make the argument this is his best solo
One of album's better tracks, other being Surrender to Reason and Looking Glass
Although I'm not very fond of the vocals but he used it every well for DT's style
Miss you portnoy😟
strange how amazing the guitar tone on this song is compared to some songs on the album
A good album of progressive pop
I hope you are kidding
Esta canción me gusta para apertura del concierto en esta gira del nuevo Album :). Excelente canción.
Am I the only one who thinks LaBrie sounds like Dave Mustaine in some parts of the song?
What part?
Of course. Megadeth is a huge influence
Yanoé Samson Go listen to the song Octavarium, it literally sounds like Mustaine makes an appearance on it near the end. And on Honor Thy Father I think he has a whole Zack De La Rocha thing going haha It's great
The full song sounds like holly wars
I hope Holly is a typo and not a thrash Christmas song...wait that might be cool
MegaTheater
DreamDeath
con este tema fusion megadeth -dream theater, espero siga siempre adelante y no conserve su forma de componer. Es uno de los mejores en el mundo..
2:13 that riff...fucking epic
1:22 is where the fun starts ;)
Came here to say it sounded like Megadeth. Everyone already said that. It sure does sound like classic metal.
alucino ...tremendo tema¡¡¡
Truely Epic Metal Ballad. (I believe one could call this a ballad, correct me if I am wrong).
Dimebag has headbang this song ! :)
Wish the song just started at 1:22, no reason for a verse-chorus song to be almost 7 minutes long without extended instrumental sections...
Had front row at Graceland, yes Graceland most excellent!!!
They're both ethereal sounding, but they really aren't tied in musically if you listen them.
Dream theatre hla ah chuan kala duh berrr 🥲
2:31 James labrie being Dave mustaine
2:12 riffage gets me fucking pumped every time
So cool!
