Sorry the map is currently not working on PDXMods. There seems to be an issue with custom maps after the most recent update. I'll keep working on it and will give an update when it's working
French guy speaking, your town is quite good! A few tips and changes I could give you would be that French towns and cities are full of small roads going in all directions and sometimes only a few dozen metres long, so the use of the grid in urban planning is almost non-existent. Also, there are a huge number of one-way streets, which many towns use to distribute the flow of traffic more evenly. The city centers of French towns and cities are also made up of a wide variety of buildings. The main style is Haussmannian, but there are regional variations. As a result, streets are often made up of many buildings of different sizes and colors. In fact, what's most noticeable in French cities is the aspects of time and progress, the towns have developed slowly and gradually. You have to bear in mind that some villages or towns have existed for hundreds of years, which means that everything is different and gives a rather organic look. Secondly, the bigger the village, the more buildings with shops and, ESPECIALLY, bars will line the waterfront. Bars and cafés are everywhere, on every street. The culture of the bar terrace is deeply rooted in France. Finally, for the name of the village, I had in mind something like Saint-Centimes sur Mer (which means Saint Cent on sea), as France has a rich history with the Christian religion, many villages are named after a Saint, e.g. Saint-Etienne, Saint-Malo, Saint-Brieuc, Saint Mathurin, etc. Secondly, many towns and villages have geographical specialties in their names: Boulogne-sur-mer, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Aix-les-Bains, etc. And finally, Centimes means "cent"/"penny", a nod to the channel's name. I love your videos on CS2 and can't to see the next ones about this new serie on french and uk towns !
Some great suggestions! Unfortunately due to how the game works, having non-gridded streets is really complicated, so I assume that's why he didn't do as many squiggly roads, though 2.20 being a detailer he could definitely go around plopping buildings to make them conform to the squiggly roads 😅 But narrow one way streets is totally something he could implement.
Things I'm hoping for: -London (with it's own airport seperate from the mainland, with both rail and road connections) -Scottish Highlands + British farmland -Dutch city a la Amsterdam mixed with Dutch and German port cities -pan-Mediterranean town (S. France, Italy, Spain; maybe even Turkish or Morocco influence) -Alps+fjords (Bavaria, Switzerland, Norway, etc. combined) -beyond said mountains; East Germany/Russia (This represents the transition to former Soviet States in both the alps and Nordic countries)
Wait.. I thought that was the entire reason the water tower was put.. THERE... because it looks like a lighthouse.. I felt for sure that it would then be moved to the spit to "be" a lighthouse... was that JUST me?!
I was thinking the same. Just missing the 360° glass at the top. I live in Brittany and we don't have such water towers. Most of them get built in the 50-70's so they are made of concrete, no window at all. Really strange but this asset would be perfect as an asset for my upper Brittany run!
I think for the name of the French village that "Fort aux Bruines" is cool because it’s mean Mist Fort, and these types of villages with an oceanic climate often have this kind of rain in winter, for example in Brittany or Normandy.
Fantastic build. Having spent a fair bit of time in France, I’ve found many of them have coastal fortifications from the napoleonic period, which might be a nice addition if possible
For the connection to the uk, build an underwater train across the river to replicate the channel tunnel, as the channel tunnel is a real life underwater train tunnel which links the uk and France. It would be really cool to make a little uk and little France, and connect them with a little channel tunnel
Hey I'm French, and i hope i can share some knowledge about France. - Channel Islands could give you some inspiration. - North of France is more dense and industrial, than south is more about food and tourism. - "Beauce" has been named "the attic of France" as it produced the main part of grains (and we eat a lot of bread). - "Deauville" and "Honfleur" is small rich town basically made for rich Parisian to go on vacation. They are really pretty small cities on the sea side and of course really expensive leaving of tourism. - I am from north of France so I can not speak to much about south. Keep in mind wine and food. - A lot of cities are named based on the river next to them. XXX-sur-Seine is a citiy near the Seine, XXX-sur-Loire is the city near the Loire. Alternativally some are called XXX-sur-mer because they are near the sea.
mostlt unrelated but I honestly find it quite interesting how few cities in former colonies have a "XXX-on-River" name, I wonder why it was seemingly dropped during colonial times
@@qhu3878 where i live, there's cities on the Great Lake of Lake Erie called xxx-on-the-lake. i always thought it was strange until i looked at other countries and realized it was more strange that that wasn't the case in more places
This is honestly so great to see. Seems like you've found your flame again, and it really shows. The detail is incredible and the town looks so good! Awesome episode.
From France: bravo et merci ! My name suggestion for this town is Belleville-sur-Mer (which literally means "Beautiful city on the sea"). Many French towns have their name ending in -ville, especially in Normandy, where you got your inspiration (Deauville, Trouville, Barneville, Granville, Gouville...) Many other coastal French towns are named Something-sur-Mer, with "sur-Mer" meaning "on the sea". Also, Belleville is a neighborhood in Paris, so I think that would be a very fitting name.
I recognize that French town! I once solo-biked through there ten years ago. It's called Port-en-Bessin-Huppain. I remember it smelling like the sea, and there was a local festival going on, with lots of people crowded in the port. Excited to watch the series.
maybe the town's name could be Deux Côtés? its just "two sides" in French because this little town is separated by a river and matches with the channels name a little!
First off: love the map and the way you filled it in this first episode! Few ideas (some might have already been mentioned): - The boat ramp seems a bit oversized for it's surroundings. Maybe you could add a (former) shipyard on the grass patch next to it. It would give an industrial touch to this old coastal town. - The hill next to the river really lends itself to have some sort of fortification. I doubt there are any assets for it, but it would be a great touch. - As you're starting out small, try to keep farming on the arable flat land and try not to expand too much into it. Both France and the Netherlands have lots of farms and they are integral to the way their layout. Just putting this up as inspiration. You do you, cause you're a magician in this game!
Ooh ooh ooh. With the farm areas, it might be a good idea to do a little market town/corner here and there. Basically a pub, a general store, a church and a place where an old market used to be, probably with a war memorial of some kind in the middle now.
I feel like that retaining wall along the waterfront street next to the hill is doing a LOT of work! Also, a castle totally makes sense on top of the hill if this is a European town. It would look so cool! The path leading down from the castle could be the real old town with old businesses along it, like pubs, and maybe a church.
29:40 Sailor here! The green and red pillars either side of the channel into the marina in france are for navigation I guess. The pillar is for starboard and the red pillar is for port, as you enter the port you'd keep the green to your right and red to your left, it is obvious where you are meant to go usually but ports still have these all the time. They usually are connected to shipping lanes that use buoys of the same colours to let you know which direction you are going as the lanes will be directed clockwise around continents. They should have lights on them too so if it is really foggy you know where the channel is between the breakwater. For more information there are lots of helpful videos on IALA Buoyage, I am pretty sure that France falls under system A.
The hill overlooking the town actually makes me think of Notre-Dame de la Garde that overlooks the Old Port of Marseille, so a church could work there if you have the right asset for it. It also reminded me of the Riviera map from World in Conflict, which had a lighthouse and old WW2-style bunkers overlooking a French village that is not dissimilar from yours, lol. Alternatively, I also thought of Mount Royal Park in Montreal if you prefer the more forested look, with it's chalet overlook, Cross, and broadcasting tower.
French sub here 👋 your work is great! May I suggest some names for this little town. In the north/ouest france names style we could name it something like « Pontoband » [pɔ̃tobɑ̃], « Guersy » [geʁsi], « Meseriac » [mezeʁiak]. These are invented names that i think would fit nicely 👌 Very exited to see what’s comming with this new map ❤️
When you get to England you should definitely have driving on the left, it will add an interesting but if realism and can easily be achieved with road builder and I don’t think there will be any other issues with it
Idk if it’s the grid, but this feels a lot like a midwestern coastal town on Lake Michigan. These assets would work well as a bed and breakfast when spliced together
Could see the new water tower on top of the hill. There would 100% be something on top of that hill in a European country. It would either be a small church/chapel for the tower or a watch tower to protect the harbour. Even if you did the ruins of a simple look out tower, most parks have a castle or ruins in them across Europe.
Yeah this is absolutely incredible work! And the economy will balance once your savegame grows, the early economy is brutal if you're focusing on detailing
download the tree grates mod in pd mods for peak france. Also for UK build don’t forget the sewage drain from Thames water into the sea, to pollute as much as possible
I swear you detail like nobody else, the realism you manage to get in both the farmlands and that beach front is insane and its so satisfying to watch!
This is truly exciting! I finally feel like watching the $2.20 of old, with the micro detailing and hand placement of buildings. I can't wait for the next episode!
37:45 your first 9 tiles (including the ones selected in map editor) do not have tile upkeep. Upkeep applies to all tiles purchased after that. Its based on amount of buildable area and resources. So all that fertile land you put in will make the tiles more expensive.
Very cool build and as a french dude, I recommend to put a chapel on top of the hill in the village, it will be 100% realistic. It's obvious a chapel were built there during medieval times.
Looking lovely! Something for me that could improve it is making the roads in the town a lot more narrow. which fits my perception of small french towns better
I really wish they did an Australian region pack too! Not the generic suburban look that's really no different to the USA, but the inner-city Victorian & Edwardian era architecture that is very unique to Australia. The kinds of houses you see in places like Darlinghurst, Surry Hills etc in Sydney or Carlton, Fitzroy, Windsor etc in Melbourne, the typical inner-city shopping strips, even our older high density CBD buildings are very different to those in either the UK or US too, and even on the Steam Workshop after C:S had been out for years there still wasn't a whole lot that captured that architecture, so a C:S2 commissioned region pack that does it right would be amazing! Not to mention of course Australian sports fields (AFL/cricket ovals in particular) needing to be included!
As for making money, what I often do at the beginning is NOT building things like cemeteries, clinics etc... they cost a lot of money to operate and aren't necessary. Also, electricity import is incredibly expensive. What you can do to get money, is develop the industrial part of town until you unlock offices. then tax the industries 12%, they will still come to the city. Also, reduce unemployement to reduce poverty and increase taxes on households (max. 10% until they actually complain). Once I make loads of money I usually reduce/revamp the random industries to make them look realistic. Hope it helps :)
Hey TDT, if you want inspiration for any more coastal French towns, Roscoff in Britany is one such example. It's very quaint and historic and the feel of it could be easily replicated in CS2
I've been feeling a little uninspired with cities of late but seeing these new assets is doing a good job of reigniting that spark. Being from the UK originally I'm very excited for both the UK assets and what you do with them!
Love how the map turned out so far. Also yeah, tile upkeep was introduced a good while ago with Economy 2.0. However it is disabled iirc if you use like unlock all or infinite money or something. I don't know specifics as I haven't touched CS2 personally in months, waiting for those US region packs because low density NA zoning is probably my least favorite. Tile Upkeep was added because people felt the game was too easy and had no challenge and you made too much money once you had a decent sized city. I personally am not a fan of it because it sort've forces you to use your tiles "efficiently" and by "efficiently" I mean really build up larger towns and cities and have less rural countryside and small towns. It basically makes the small town or county build incredibly difficult. I've seen most people who do like the upkeep counter this argument by saying "Just play with infinite money or whatever. Then you won't have to worry about tile upkeep." That response just annoys me though, because I like having a sense of progression, but don't want to feel that the game pigeon holes me into building a specific way. It needs to be a separate toggle imo. Great for people who like it, but we should be able to disable it without losing all progression (I.E. Having infinite Money, or unlocking everything at the start).
I think the castle/fort/ruins should go where you put those houses up on the hill, I feel like it’s a realistic spot for it since it would overlook the old harbor and the river channel, while also keeping the top of the mountain nice and natural.
Hey man, love the vids and this new project. Just in case you'r going for something realistic, don’t be scared of spamming roundabouts for the France part 😂, also there isn’t that much dirtroads, they are only used for entrances of private properties. Cobblestone roads are very much a thing for historical mainways in cities. Never forget that cities are built around points of interest and never around roads (wich appeard after the cities). I really like this new projects, hope you enjoy doing it!
36:56 I think there would be waves, I live on puget sound and there are large islands and land masses about the same distance out, and we still get some pretty large waves, especially during storms.
7:33 "I need to make money" my thought : well, you could raise taxes, we are used to it in France... on a more serious note, in france the In and Out of an Highway can not be on the same level than the highway, it must be higher or lower, if that can help you building a more realistic connection to the rest of the map
unfortunately the Recolor mod won't work properly with the french buildings by design. Gèze has said that the colormap (which is what can change color in the vanilla buildings) is things like the storefront, lights, etc while the (very bright imo) walls and roof are set as they are
hey two dollars, the town already looks gorgeous. there is a name suggestion for this cute place "Lapinet" inspired from rabbit as the geography of area where the town is situated looks like rabbit. if you observe carefully the crossroad where river is splitting looks like rabbits ear and the place near water tower where river meets the sea look like rabbit mouth.
I think a pretty interesting idea for this town would be a D-Day memorial of some sort because the area where it's at reminds me of towns along the Normandy beaches.
Tiles with natural resources cost more in tile upkeep. You might want to download a mod to dial back the tile upkeep fee so you can keep building instead of paying your bills lol
I would love to see a little railcar going up that hill to any kind of small castle or ruin. like the drachenfelsbahn in bonn, germany or the zahnradbahn in graz, austria.
You could call it “le vieux port” It means “the old port” in French and it would make sense because it’s a historical French city so ‘old’ and because it’s an island the port would also make sense!
Gotta build an alpine road like Lacet Montevernier. Steep gradients are common place in the mountains of France. Dont be afraid to really ramp up it 12% -18%
I think like in the future, you could build like a small little state similar to the Vatican City like a religious little state. I think that would be really interesting to see all the churches or all of them cathedrals if they have any, but this is just a recommendation.
So.. a very interesting thing is developing here... I am starting to prefer watching YOU play the game than actually playing it myself. There's something about the game I both love and hate, which is resolved by your content that I can't resolve myself in game..
I feel like the vanilla European assets work way better for a town of this size compared to the French pack townhouses. I think they would fit way better, flanking a wide boulevard in a bigger town.
It looks fantastic. This makes me want to upgrade my computer. One idea - How about you build a bastion fort (aka trace italienne, aka starfort)? Many European cities have been shaped by 16th-18th century forts into their geography. For example, Neuf-Brisach or Perignan in France
There would be waves between two island in sea there is currents. I remember in Finland archipelago you cant swim against them when the waves or current gets rough.
I think including a Palace and making it sort of a political landmark will be cool since this is inspired by European countries. It' can be the one thing in this new "country" or city that makes it a well-known tourist destination. Kinda like Buckingham Palace in London.
Looks great, missing mechanics and full of bugs, they should’ve released in 2025 with way more mechanics and stuff, now they cant release mechanic since most devs prob left project
When you do the UK towns, you should do some beach side rainbow coloured buildings. Places like Balamory and Eastborn, also do a rock beach for one of the UK beach coast towns

You are a bit of a ways away but I definitely think that you should theme the tunnel to the uk around the actual channel tunnel
I feel like a series about a strictly-art deco city would be amazing. Given it's the best architectural style.
Looks great mate. Love those little farm textures.
Nice, great start :)
Thanks for sharing!
36:56 I think there would be waves, I live on puget sound and there are large islands and land masses about the same distance out, and we still get some pretty large waves, especially during storms.
I really wish they added waves into cities skylines.
You should try making part of the city developed on the mountains. Good Build tho
7:33 "I need to make money"
my thought : well, you could raise taxes, we are used to it in France...
on a more serious note, in france the In and Out of an Highway can not be on the same level than the highway, it must be higher or lower, if that can help you building a more realistic connection to the rest of the map
unfortunately the Recolor mod won't work properly with the french buildings by design. Gèze has said that the colormap (which is what can change color in the vanilla buildings) is things like the storefront, lights, etc while the (very bright imo) walls and roof are set as they are
Brother that farmland is 10/10 work 😮💨🔥
36:17 very impressive detail work
Even inside the sea-break there will be some waves on the beach - just they won't be as large as waves outside the sea-break :)
hey two dollars, the town already looks gorgeous. there is a name suggestion for this cute place "Lapinet" inspired from rabbit as the geography of area where the town is situated looks like rabbit. if you observe carefully the crossroad where river is splitting looks like rabbits ear and the place near water tower where river meets the sea look like rabbit mouth.
Amazing !! Love the detail that went into this
I think a pretty interesting idea for this town would be a D-Day memorial of some sort because the area where it's at reminds me of towns along the Normandy beaches.
You used Port en Bessin on the French normandy coast. I recognized it immediately, we stayed in Port en Bessin last august :)
Gotta build an alpine road like Lacet Montevernier. Steep gradients are common place in the mountains of France. Dont be afraid to really ramp up it 12% -18%
Excited for this series exploring the region packs!
A post-soviet region pack would have so much use in this series
I love the fact that you named it Doggerland
You should also do off shore wind farms. They're quite common in the Netherlands.
It looks fantastic. This makes me want to upgrade my computer.
One idea - How about you build a bastion fort (aka trace italienne, aka starfort)? Many European cities have been shaped by 16th-18th century forts into their geography. For example, Neuf-Brisach or Perignan in France
I'm hoping to see a Dutch style canal town, and a lot of railways aswell
There would be waves between two island in sea there is currents. I remember in Finland archipelago you cant swim against them when the waves or current gets rough.
Fyi the two towns used for inspiration are Boulogne-sur-Mer and Port en Bessin
Nice spotting!
I suggest making the sea shallower and a less steep gradient on the coastline.
A castle would look nice on the top of that hill!
Nice I really like it, thx for more inspiration.
Doggerland is the land that used to be where the sea is now between the UK and the Netherlands,
Since it’s a small French village you could call it “Centime” (said like Saun Team) which is cent in French. 💶
I think including a Palace and making it sort of a political landmark will be cool since this is inspired by European countries. It' can be the one thing in this new "country" or city that makes it a well-known tourist destination. Kinda like Buckingham Palace in London.
I have a bug right now. I’ll mostly get just gas station.
detailed areas look incredible
43:05 i'm dying my god this game
Looks great, missing mechanics and full of bugs, they should’ve released in 2025 with way more mechanics and stuff, now they cant release mechanic since most devs prob left project
Missing a nice (fish) market square in the town! aswel as some boats & docks in the harbour! apart from that it's an amazing town you made so far!
I always love the music you choose!
When you do the UK towns, you should do some beach side rainbow coloured buildings. Places like Balamory and Eastborn, also do a rock beach for one of the UK beach coast towns
