I always enjoy your videos! I'm in zone 7a, St. Louis. A few years ago I made a gardening mistake. Planted Hydrangea tree form and a couple of Hydrangea bushes. All Fire Light with the bushes being Tidbits. My front yard is full afternoon sun, but I thought with a little extra water when temps became hot I'd get away with it. They bloomed a beautiful creamy white, but that's as far as they went. Too much sun in the afternoon and the blooms died never reaching the pink to dark red stage. *Stick with me I'm getting to the Butterfly bushes, lol.* Transplanted all of them to the backyard a month ago for morning sun (fingers crossed I'll see leaf's blooming next spring) Now, I have a spot where the Hydrangeas were. I had to dig about 2 feet down to get most of the root ball out. After filling the spot back up and making sure the soil wasn't packed I did my research this time and figured Butterfly bushes is the way to go with all that afternoon full sun. Plus, the soil isn't packed any more so that should be great for no wet feet. I looked over the Proven Winners site and I believe the Lo & Behold Pink Micro Chip and Blue Chip Jr. should do the job. I've always had good luck with Proven Winners plants and I buy over 100 annuals from them every spring. I'm used to the bubble bees every summer I plant Lantana (also in the front yard with full afternoon sun.) in my large Mexican Talavera planters and watering them by hand doesn't seem to upset them. Can't say that about the darn wasp I came across last summer, ouch!
I love miss mollie butterfly bush! I planted one at our other house and I planted one at our new house out in the country but deer and jackrabbit's love eating it. So I caged it up. Hoping miss mollie will take off soon. Thanks for the video!
My favorite shrub! I have very old varieties as well as many newer beauties. I refer to it as Butterfly Central when they are in bloom..nothing more beautiful. Thank you for the great info!!
Cool. Exactly the video I was needing. Just bought two of these and, not ever having grown anything, this was very helpful. The store also sold me potting soil to go with it, so that was helpful
@@GardeningwithCreekside Thanks, and my wife and I will probably be there later today. Your beautiful place has become her new place to shop for flowers.
I just bought a Miss Molly from Lowes and planted it ,,,,should of watched your video BEFORE i planted it lol , cause i mixed in some Black Kow compost to my dirt and planted it level with the ground instead of raised above ground .. BTW Jenny you are beautiful,, i'm guessing you probably won that Miss Carolina crown before ..
Great info as always. Just planted one and it’s leaves are turning light green with dark vines. Going to check out the roots then will check for iron. Thanks again!
Jenny,, I will be planting my Miss Molly this spring, will plant it high, will not add anything to the planting hole. You mention mulch and Proven Winners suggests 2-3" of mulch. What are your thoughts on that, what kind of mulch would you suggest to add around bush?
Wow! All the info I need in one video! Thank you! That’s hard to find. One question though. I live in N Cal zone 9b. We have very hot and dry summers. Would you say that everything you suggested applies to my zone as well? Thank you so much!
Ok… with my Pugster Amethyst, you’re saying that I can plant it in my hard packed clay soil without amending & leave it about 2 niches above the soil level for water run off and don’t mulch up against the trunk and it should survive our 7a winter? I’ll bite the bullet & plant it. Ty for the great video & giving me the confidence.
Interesting info as I will be planting a Miss Molly in the spring. Its crazy how varied everyone who grows these will tell you something different about the planting hole to the point Im not sure what correct, but I like your thoughts on it.
The exact planting method will largely depend on your soil. Because we have heavy clay that retains water & butterfly bushes hate to have wet feet, that's why we plant them high.
I will follow your advice as I have mostly clay soil, but I have another question. When first plant a BB do you water it in at that time . From your vid sounds as if you are saying no extra water should be added. Waiting for your reply
I love butterfly bushes I have four Black Knight, Miss Ruby, Pink Delight and a random multi color one. I wish Proven Winners would come out with a yellow butterfly bush like honeycomb because I would sure love to get a yellow butterfly bush that was a PW plant. 💛🦋
I have to put extra soil in my planting holes, our ground is full of rocks like big rocks too by the time I get rid of them there's not enough soil to backfill the hole. Hopefully it's not damaging too them.
Hi Jenny! Love your videos! If you can remember how many plants you used to achieve the look in your garden, let us know! When I shop it’s usually because of inspiration and I gotta have that look! Sure I can figure out the spacing requirements but it would be helpful to have a quick reference. 😊
I thought “Butterfly bush “ was a joke and that it didn’t really attract butterflies. WAS I EVER WRONG!!! I now have 5 very effective butterfly bushes (NJ). I just bought whatever the store had- nothing fancy- all attract butterflies (tiger swallowtails, monarchs, skippers,…) and bees. RUN to the nursery and get one! Oh! some of mine get less than 8 hours and they’re fine for me.
Can you talk about the vitex shrub and its care? I have one of the newer cultivars which is doing well in my Raleigh, NC garden but I don't know a lot about them.
I've been watching a bunch of them planted at the back of a shopping center that has stopped construction. They've had ZERO care, weeds all around & they're growing & blooming along. Seems they thrive on neglect. I'm looking to put one or more in our new yard, love their later bloom time. Medicinal plant too!
@@GardeningwithCreekside seem untroubled by Japanese beetles too! Those buggers are eating EVERYTHING right now. Next year I'll know to put traps up early as they must leave pheromones on their favorites. Last house was only 4 miles away but rarely saw any. Had more birds there & I'm sure that helped. I made friends with the rooster when I worked at a local garden center by collecting them in my empty lunch bag & feeding them to him 😆
All of Proven Winners butterfly bushes are noninvasive so they are safe to plant. Otherwise I would contact your local Agricultural Extension office and ask them about it. They are a great resource for your region’s information!
I only fertilize them in early Spring with an all purpose slow release fertilizer (like Plant-tone). They do not need to be fed water soluble fertilizer weekly so yes I would stop that.
Immediately after they bloom. So run outside and trim them really quick [he he he]. They bloom on old wood so don't wait too long before you prune them. You want them to have plenty of time to put on bud sets for next year.
I’ve got a sunny spot along an adjoining chain link fence that I’m trying to find something to make a hedge. How many Miss Molly’s do you have in that hedge? It’s gorgeous. Are they deciduous? I’m in NC Zone 7 also but northeast from you about 2 hours. Plant in the fall? Thanks for all the great information and videos. 😋😋
There are 5 bushes in a span of about 20-25'. I have found that in our climate the butterfly bushes are semi-evergreen. They certainly aren't as full as they are now, but they will retain some leaves.
I have 2 that I just planted this year. I did one in a container. I realized that was a mistake but it’s thriving for now. When would be the best time to transplant it into the ground?
Have you found your bushes to be invasive? I've seen a lot of discussion around that topic this year. I planted a Nanho Blue this year (which is a sterile variety.) Even it's first year in the ground it has really taken off so I really look forward to seeing it come back next year.
Best video I have seen on these yet.
I always enjoy your videos!

Great video from your favorite nephew. Tell Jackson I said hey
Will do!
My buddleia is in a container it's a favorite of the monarch butterflies in my ft Lauderdale garden.
I am so glad I happened to watch this video!!! I have an Asian moon I have been needing to plant and I would normally amend with compost!
Real good tips for planting in clay.
Beautiful! We love their fragrant blooms.

I definitely want to get one for my yard.
We have 2 butterfly bushes in large pots. They are beautiful. Thanks for the information on pruning. We were not sure what to do.
Glad it was helpful! Check out this video where I show you exactly how to prune a butterfly bush. th-cam.com/video/ROQo4_HYHSw/w-d-xo.html
They are stunning I have none right now but will be getting some!
Wow,I have a spot for one butterfly bush for sure!
Check and see if the Gecko has an Australian accent. LOL

Great to pair with hardy lantana for a hot, dry, sunny spot. Not many butterflies left though, really sad.
Excellent idea!

Hi Jenny! I'm in zone 7b do I need to prune back Pugster blue butterfly bushes in the winter before new growth appears?
I love my Miss Molly's.

When can you transplant butterflies bushes? Iam in Zone 8b in Ga? I have a couple I want to move
Now is a good time 😊
Some states consider butterfly bushes as an invasive plant. How do you know which type to plant? I live in zone B.

No not at all. Maybe it’s our climate or just the varieties I plant, but I have never even thought of butterfly bushes as invasive here.
It's beautiful! Do the butterflies lay eggs on it, too?
No. They do not lay eggs on it. It is a nectar plant.
