I knew you two would like this one, you needed a visual reminder, you haven't had many FZ videos requested. (There are far too few available) Of all his bands, this one had the best personality and chemistry, you could see how much fun they were having performing complex music, while making it look easy. The 88 band may have been technically better, and I say maybe, but they lacked the stage presence of this incarnation. I also like this because Ruth really shows her chops, and you could see she was gassed by the end after all the work she put into this song. Thanks for reacting to (and enjoying) this video!
The 88 band was larger, at least with all horns and equipment on stage. If you watch their Barcelona concert (which is here on TH-cam) you will see there’s no way they could have the same stage presence as this group. But it was an awesome group. Zappa stayed up front conducting. Jumping around during a jam would have caused them to fall off their tiered stages. But they seemed to be having fun nonetheless.
@@barrywilson1294 I am not discounting the 88 band, but having seen them live (Valentine's Day 88 to be specific), by then Frank was clearly slowing down, probably from the cancer. I also was blessed to see bands from the early 80s with Steve Vai and Ray White, and the late 70s bands with Bozzio. I enjoyed the 88 band, but I have fonder memories of earlier shows, they were more lively and Frank was more expressive with his stage presence. The Duke, Ruth, NMB band, which I never saw live, shows the real enthusiasm and cohesion that made them special. The 88 band was infighting behind the scenes, and blew up shortly after the European leg of the tour started, so I am not so sure they were 'having' fun, or just acting like they were. IMHO anyway.
This song represents what is great about Zappa; his mastery of rhythmic and melodic invention. I saw this band in '73 and was astonished by how good they were. Tight but loose. Decades ago on a flight to the coast, the flight attendants gave each of us a Florentine Pogen. It was delicious. I couldn’t wait to show the wrapping to our guitar player who was a huge Zappa fan.

It made the song sound better knowing the weight of versillimilitude in the lyrics. Zappa was a musical genius and very witty.
"Pogens" is an anglified spelling of the Swedish bakery "Pagens" (where the "a" has a ring on top). "Pagens" is south Swedish dialect and means "the boy's" (cookies, say). ... It turns out that these Florentine Pogens being sold in California are a type of cookie that Pagens sells in Sweden, but under a different name.
The story has it that one night in the dressing room, there were packets of Florentine Pogens ("Toscapågar" in Swedish) and the band started BS:ing about "What in H€ll is a Florentine Pogen?"
Also, I love watching Zappa rearrange the process by which people think about music. Either you get it, or you don't. I feel sorry, truly for the latter.
I asked Frank during rehearsal for A Zappa Affair (world premieres of his ballets by Berkeley Symphony) what a Florentine Pogen was. He responded that a Pogen is a type of cookie and a Florentine is from Italy so, basically, she was the daughter of an Italian cookie (cookie has been slang for young woman since at least the 1920s).
For those unfamiliar, it's amazing to see how the band members ALWAYS are looking to Frank for his directions as to what's to happen next, melodically, thematically, and in terms of time signature. He TRULY was an orchestra leader for the 20th century.
He says in his book, The Real Frank Zappa, that he had up to 100 hand signals that he could use to signal changes in the music. For any tune there was three different levels that were called upon to make them unique, but don't make me explain that here. But the actual amount of improvisation in a well rehearsed and played piece is just insane.🤯
This is the fifth reaction on Zappa songs i watched from you two (non chronological) in a row this evening, and from song to song i started reacting myself a bit more, and at this song i was dancing in front of the laptop :). Zappa is my favorite musician and i can and do sing along to all of his songs. It is a real pleasure to see and hear your reaction to them and i will sure come back to your channel to see more Zappa reactions. There are so much emotions in his music, emotions of all color. It's worth reading about, but Zappa for some reason was in Hawaii and strolls into this hotel where NMB was performing in a lounge. Somehow Frank knew to check NMB out. How? After his set Frank approached him and essentially said 'you're going to be my next singer.' NMB was like 'I don't even know who you are, I don't know what your music is like'. Frank: 'NP, when you're in LA give me a call and we'll hook up.' that happened a few months later and ... NMB was blown away by the music, AND he was like 'I get to play with George effing Duke. George Duke! There was no way I would not join this band.' Then he gets introduced casually to Tina Turner, etc. The rest is history. NMB is one of the greatest performers ever. I had the pleasure of meeting him in Seattle in 1994 at a small bar where he was performing with a Zappa cover band called 'Project Object'. He was very gracious and just an awesome guy. (I also met Ike Willis who was there performing) I'll always be happy I met him (them). And, I saw the first 'Zappa Plays Zappa' tour in Denver, got to meet Dweezil, the saw them again in Seattle at a show which was eventually recorded and released on the first 'ZPZ' dvd. NMB was brilliant, Steve Vai was brilliant, Terry Bozio was brilliant, the whole band was ridiculous. What a huge undertaking and labour of love Dweezil embarked on. He's a good boy. This looks like the Zappa recording where they play my favourite version of Inca Roads. The band are on top form and Frank is in a playful mood. And as usual any version of Florentine Pogen is just great but this one is a veritable treasure trove of changes and inserts, flowery refrains and good old fashioned Zappa-ness! And I loved the gorilla.😁
This band and the live in New York are my favorite lineups. Just fantastic musicians and great compositions. There is so much more to explore. His bands through the years are all amazing.✌️❤️😃
in past videos you've occasionally commented on the interesting, unconventional lead lines and solos the band members play, which Zappa would frequently have written out - rarely with any mistakes at all - and handed them in the midst of a show. Frank wrote music on entablature incredibly quickly and accurately, he rarely had to correct anything. With Frank having initially started his musical journey as an adolescent drummer, he would at this point in the band regularly write a solo or lead run for a clarinet or sax or guitar, whatever, on the drums. So the patterning and inflections frequently involved percussive forms but for non-percussive instruments. A very interesting layer to the compositions. A lot of starting and stopping, hesitations, etc. on instruments that typically did not have that dynamic. Brilliant. Ruth talked about how he would write a piece for her in triplets, but remove one of the notes in each chord, so it was a triplet missing a note but which still had to be taken into account. Mind-bending conceptual compositions. And if you can't tell, I don't know shit about music. But, I went to school for art history and graphic design, so music anthropology is my main thang. I really appreciate your reactions and perceptions of what you are hearing. You are open to perceiving the 'conceptual continuity' in lots of bands' music, not just Frank - who coined that term. But a ton of bands had a lot of CC. Thanks again.
Solid example of Zappa music. Layers of fun,playful and interesting. Of course, the humorous lyrics. All built on a foundation of masterful musicianship.
The whole show "A Token of hes Extreme" is a milestone. Not long ago the Roxy Show was also released. It is from the year befor this, 73. The camera quality is not equally good, but good enough and it also contains the master of the trombone, Bruce Fowler.
Of Course, Inca Roads, Florentine Pogen, both you hear on One Size Fits All is live from this performance and mastered to remove some of the sound effects. Also for some clarification, referenced in this @ 4:19 "Marty Perellis, originally from Maryland, was FZ's road manager for a number of tours during the 70's. His antics, and sexual experiences, provided Frank with many of his most famous "bits". Marty provided vocal for You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 3, and cannot be seen (because he's in a gorilla suit) in the Zappa movie Dub Room Special....." Zappa Wiki Jawaka
Napoleon is still in great shape.... saw him with Ed Palermo band two years ago ..... his voice still great and he is my favorite Zappa singer for sure . Never saw Zappa live ....but chatting a couple of words after the show with him was so refreshing..........great show by Ed Palermo if you have the chance to watch that band it totally pays.......Used to play at Iridium .... go go !!

Yeah the Ruth band as I think of it. Definitely the best for me. They went everywhere musically and were having a blast. Got half the Roxy (sides 2/3 on vinyl) for a dollar 35 years ago and never looked back, a new world opened.
Zappa show cased his musicians. He let them shine. When they were where he wanted them talent wise,he let them loose,...if they were in his band, they were very good.

Can't listen to this to many times. Frank's fret hand reminds me of a square brick with 10 fingers playing redicoulis rifs. Tasty to say the least. This band is badass.

When you get Into Frank from 70 to 90 and try to get into it he is clearly a top 5 guitar player and composer. What a showman. And again Ruthie is a badass.
Florentine means from Florence and a pogen is a biscuit / cookie according to FZ himself. You certainly won't find a pogen that is "made in Florence", so in the song it's essentially an arcane non-thing that makes her a sort of heiress.
To pick up on your point Steve Via said in an interview that Frank was the only guitarist he knew that could play a 30 min solo and never repeat himself
The longevity of Frank's music is partially because there are so many live performances and Frank's solos along with the improvs by his band members are different even in the same songs. I'm still encountering live material especially now because of TH-cam that is new to me it's amazing. And I'm a guy who saw Frank live over 50 times. Still hearing new air sculptures by the maestro for the first time
One Size Fits All was the first Zappa album I ever heard as a teen in the 70s, needless to say I’d never heard anything like it and from that moment on I was hooked. I was too young to have seen this band unfortunately (I was 16 when I attended my first Zappa concert in 1980, the first of four shows I would attend 😀). Now I’ve seen Dweezil three times and one of the highlights of those shows of course was watching Napoleon belt this one out on the first ZPZ tour in 2007!
Nice observations....FZ agrees with you which is why he used so many live recordings on his studio albums. In the mid-late 80s when he wasnt touring he barely touched his guitar because he didnt see the point if there wasnt an audience to play in front of lol. Live guitar solos were a release for him
Funny you should mention his “studio” albums because this and some songs in this particular concert formed the basis of the studio album “One Size Fits All”. Frank liked to edit. I wonder what he would have done with Logic Pro or Reason.
FZ picked his musicians to play his music. They had to try out and if you made it, you got paid a salary, no drugs and you had to learn a lot of the same songs in different time signatures because they would play it different from concert to concert. We all know how hard it is to keep a band together and take it seriously. Frank had people lined up wanting to play in his band because of the music and it gave them instant musical credibility.

According to one biographer/autobiographer, this song was written about her sleazy relationship with Zappa. I mean, she wrote a whole book. Ah, I just remembered her name -- Essra Mohawk, or Sandy Hurvitz. Rock 'n' roll is so much fun. 😀
One of my favorites with lots of humor. Oh, and the studio version has no guitar solo. It stops with Chester's gorilla. This is from "A Token of my Extreme", I suppose. They showed that on German TV once a long time ago. Can you believe it?
When she's facing Frank,, the xylophone is the large instrument to Ruth's right. The Marimba is the large instrument to Ruth's left. Xylophones have metal keys and the marimba has wooden keys. The glockenspiel is a smaller xylophone octaves higher (used a lot in marching bands). The vibraphone is a xylophone with tuned pipes below the keys that give it a mellow, jazzy tone. Those are the four main mallet instruments and NONE of them are toys. The kids toys is called a xylophone as well. Love your Zappa deep-dives.

@@youjazztube from what I learned many folks confuse the Glockenspiel? with the xylophone, because some of the former were marketed as xylophones. But the difference between the Glock and the Xylo were the metal versus wooden keys. Frank, however, liked, and used 'idiophones' that had resonator tubes to create sustained notes, like the marimba and vibraphone. The former has wooden keys and the latter metal, but the Vibraphone got its name because it had dampers inside the resonators that had a motor to spin them, creating the vibrato effect. I watched a good tutorial on the family of instruments that really opened my eyes to how complex and diverse these instruments actually are!
Florentine Pogen is a cookie. When you hear something that is strange or you don't know, look it up. There's usually a story behind it. Saw Frank 5 times in one week. Same song, 5 different guitar solos. All were really good. NMB is a show unto himself. Makes very difficult songs seem easy. A true pro.

in past videos you've occasionally commented on the interesting, unconventional lead lines and solos the band members play, which Zappa would frequently have written out - rarely with any mistakes at all - and handed them in the midst of a show. Frank wrote music on entablature incredibly quickly and accurately, he rarely had to correct anything.
With Frank having initially started his musical journey as an adolescent drummer, he would at this point in the band regularly write a solo or lead run for a clarinet or sax or guitar, whatever, on the drums. So the patterning and inflections frequently involved percussive forms but for non-percussive instruments. A very interesting layer to the compositions. A lot of starting and stopping, hesitations, etc. on instruments that typically did not have that dynamic. Brilliant. Ruth talked about how he would write a piece for her in triplets, but remove one of the notes in each chord, so it was a triplet missing a note but which still had to be taken into account. Mind-bending conceptual compositions. And if you can't tell, I don't know shit about music. But, I went to school for art history and graphic design, so music anthropology is my main thang. I really appreciate your reactions and perceptions of what you are hearing. You are open to perceiving the 'conceptual continuity' in lots of bands' music, not just Frank - who coined that term. But a ton of bands had a lot of CC. Thanks again.

The whole show "A Token of hes Extreme" is a milestone.
Not long ago the Roxy Show was also released. It is from the year befor this, 73. The camera quality is not equally good, but good enough and it also contains the master of the trombone, Bruce Fowler.

Also for some clarification, referenced in this @ 4:19 "Marty Perellis, originally from Maryland, was FZ's road manager for a number of tours during the 70's. His antics, and sexual experiences, provided Frank with many of his most famous "bits". Napoleon is still in great shape.... saw him with Ed Palermo band two years ago ..... his voice still great and he is my favorite Zappa singer for sure . Never saw Zappa live ....but chatting a couple of words after the show with him was so refreshing..........great show by Ed Palermo if you have the chance to watch that band it totally pays.......Used to play at Iridium .... go go !!

I was hoping for that live version. I'll say it again: His best band ever. Excellent performances and music. The Gorilla suit must have come from the Marx Brothers. (At the Circus). You guys must definitely buy the Roxy movie to see more of its glory. It's really entertaining. Florentine Pogen was from a TV show a few years before Roxy I think. (A Token From His Extreme)
I once actually asked Chester about the gorilla and he said it was part of Frank's "studio humor"

Yeah the Ruth band as I think of it. Definitely the best for me. They went everywhere musically and were having a blast. Got half the Roxy (sides 2/3 on vinyl) for a dollar 35 years ago and never looked back, a new world opened.

Can't listen to this to many times. Frank's fret hand reminds me of a square brick with 10 fingers playing redicoulis rifs. Tasty to say the least. This band is badass.
I recall reading somewhere that Florentine Pogens were a type of cookie that Zappa enjoyed.

Florentine means from Florence and a pogen is a biscuit / cookie according to FZ himself. You certainly won't find a pogen that is "made in Florence", so in the song it's essentially an arcane non-thing that makes her a sort of heiress.
Was "Muffin Man" written before or after "Florentine Pogen" Frank sometimes threw in little references to other songs of his sometimes when he wrote.
To pick up on your point Steve Via said in an interview that Frank was the only guitarist he knew that could play a 30 min solo and never repeat himself

The longevity of Frank's music is partially because there are so many live performances and Frank's solos along with the improvs by his band members are different even in the same songs. I'm still encountering live material especially now because of TH-cam that is new to me it's amazing. And I'm a guy who saw Frank live over 50 times. Still hearing new air sculptures by the maestro for the first time
One Size Fits All was the first Zappa album I ever heard as a teen in the 70s, needless to say I’d never heard anything like it and from that moment on I was hooked. I was too young to have seen this band unfortunately (I was 16 when I attended my first Zappa concert in 1980, the first of four shows I would attend 😀). Now I’ve seen Dweezil three times and one of the highlights of those shows of course was watching Napoleon belt this one out on the first ZPZ tour in 2007!
Nice observations....FZ agrees with you which is why he used so many live recordings on his studio albums. In the mid-late 80s when he wasnt touring he barely touched his guitar because he didnt see the point if there wasnt an audience to play in front of lol. Live guitar solos were a release for him

Funny you should mention his “studio” albums because this and some songs in this particular concert formed the basis of the studio album “One Size Fits All”. Frank liked to edit. I wonder what he would have done with Logic Pro or Reason.

FZ picked his musicians to play his music. They had to try out and if you made it, you got paid a salary, no drugs and you had to learn a lot of the same songs in different time signatures because they would play it different from concert to concert.
We all know how hard it is to keep a band together and take it seriously. Frank had people lined up wanting to play in his band because of the music and it gave them instant musical credibility.

Freakin’ Awesome. I can’t think of a greater band than this particular line up. Incomparable musicians, beaming out some of the finest music ever written. I agree re Frank’s solos - he always took it somewhere interesting, even transcendent, if he was really on it.

Tom broke his hand (he says on Nappy's butt playing football) which triggered the end of the "little band." There are some charming interviews out there in which Tom speaks fondly of this unit's abilities and satisfying performances.

When she's facing Frank,, the xylophone is the large instrument to Ruth's right. The Marimba is the large instrument to Ruth's left. Xylophones have metal keys and the marimba has wooden keys. The glockenspiel is a smaller xylophone octaves higher (used a lot in marching bands). The vibraphone is a xylophone with tuned pipes below the keys that give it a mellow, jazzy tone. Those are the four main mallet instruments and NONE of them are toys. The kids toys is called a xylophone as well. Love your Zappa deep-dives.

@@SightAfterDark A: I was incorrect about the metal bars on the xylophone, they're wooden. B: Xylophones are still real instruments not toys. I just seems that Ruth doesn't have one.
@@youjazztube from what I learned many folks confuse the Glockenspiel? with the xylophone, because some of the former were marketed as xylophones. But the difference between the Glock and the Xylo were the metal versus wooden keys. Frank, however, liked, and used 'idiophones' that had resonator tubes to create sustained notes, like the marimba and vibraphone. The former has wooden keys and the latter metal, but the Vibraphone got its name because it had dampers inside the resonators that had a motor to spin them, creating the vibrato effect. I watched a good tutorial on the family of instruments that really opened my eyes to how complex and diverse these instruments actually are!

Saw Frank 5 times in one week. Same song, 5 different guitar solos. All were really good. NMB is a show unto himself. Makes very difficult songs seem easy. A true pro.
