So I’m watching these while exploring BG3, and this video came up right while I was exploring Gauntlgrym!
I have no knowledge of the Forgotten Realms setting, which makes it difficult as a DM for player who know it so well. Thank you for producing this content, its now my go to for lore and understanding this world.
that's great! I'm learning as I go to, originally making these videos because I couldn't find any myself when I wanted to learn about the Forgotten Realms. I'd read the comments, especially on the early videos to point out corrections! Thanks for watching!
Poser.
One of my favorite channels on TH-cam. Stick with it man, you do a great jobph. The ph is silent of course.
Jophking aside, that was great ;P
Just discovered you yesterday and watched all of your videos. You rock and I can't wait for more content!
Welcome aboard!
This series is absolutely fantastic, thank you so much for the time and effort you have put into each and every video. I'm just starting to DM and I was finding that just reading the modules alone wasn't giving me the amount of information to really bring it to life. You've provided me with so much confidence and I can really see how, when I become more experienced, I can riff off the history to create amazing homebrews. You're awesome!
That's great! Happy gaming, I'm glad to help 🙂
I ran a campaign once and two of my players were elementals ( steam and stone respectively but brothers) from Gauntlgrym and I decided to make the fire primordial their mother. I made the city so that it had made a pact with fire Primordial to keep their Forges hot in exchange for protection and fuel. Their birth story was that one day there was a leaking pipe and spilled a magic enhanced liquid on her, causing a part of her body to be cleaved off, resulting in two elementals- one steam and one rock. They decided to build themselves a sister as well, who was an automaton powered by an eternal flame from the primordial. They whole reason the three of them left was to search for a natural rift to the fire realm so they can learn more about where they came from. I had a lot of fun when they went back to their home city
I absolutely love this! Thank you so much!! There is very very little narration videos about the forgotten realms and it's such a shame because it has such a rich history. You just won yourself a new subscriber! Thanks again for this fantastic series and keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching, welcome aboard!
Azuth, as a mortal, was a lover for the goddess of magic? That's even more amazing than winning that fight.
The dude is a legend
If I have my current lore correct - I wonder if one of the Seven will take his place.
@@DavidCodyPeppers. Hm.... I don't know. It makes sense if it does happen but we really don't know what can happen.
i wonder if that would tie into baldurs gate 3?
@@namekman01 Who knows?
Just found this channel. Enjoying the playlist ! Fantastic work sir.
These are my favorite d and d lore videos. 10/10 it made faerune history so much better
Great job, I really like these.
Two points, dealing with one section.
1. It is pretty well established that Jhaamdath is destroyed by a tidal wave created by the elven High Mages of Nikerymath. This is mentioned in both the Grand History of the Realms and the 3rd Ed. Lost Empires book.
2. There are (to my knowledge) only two references to Murdane. The first is a passing reference in 3rd Ed. "Faith and Pantheons" in Lathander's write up, but oddly not in Helm's (her lover) or Umberlee's (her killer). And the second is a sermon that appears in the Grand History. The sermon itself mentions that pinning a date (and so any action on Toril) to the Dawn Cataclysm is impossible.
So, there is not much directly linking the destruction of Jhaamdath to the drowning of Murdane.
Thanks for the updates!
No problem. I am just getting back into the Realms after a long absence, and your post and my reading just happened to line up.
Very enjoyable videos. Keep them coming!
+zorrozoronducksauce Jr Thanks!
I know I'm super late, but I'm a lore fiend! I love your videos!
As someone just starting to DM , and with not much for money or time to read up, I am really enjoying this series. Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make this. It seems to be very well put together. Thank you for the time spent.
Awesome! Good luck with your DM'ing! Game On!
LOVE THE VIDEOS, just a suggestion but maybe a series of videos on the heroes of Faerune, Elminster, Drizzt, Kelbehn Blackstaff etc. I see a lot of bad guys but not good guys. Also some artifacts of forgotten realms Crystal Shard for example. thanks dude
Next event ideas: Ascalhorn(hellgate keep), Destruction of Myth Ondath, Fall of Myth Drannor, Birth of the Seven Sisters, Rise and fall of Daggerdale, Alias' saga, then the Time of Troubles.
Those are all great. I make videos ahead of time because I have an upcoming wedding so I'll have to backtrack to hit those! Thanks for the suggestions :D
This series is a great DM resource.
Beautiful work as usual!
Thanks!
I would be interested in hearing your process for researching these.
The short version is it's a lot of reading PDFs and searching for specific words. I am collecting PDFs (campaign guides etc) that relate to my topic and then I search the index for specifics. Aside from the game guides some websites have pointed me to the Volo's Guide books, as well as certain modules, as was the case for the Netheril videos. I try to read all I can and write up my video, condensing it to a 8-10 min video.
Maybe a video in the future of a behind the scenes making Forgotten Realm Explains? Would anyone find that interesting?
I would watch it, but I have done my own deep dives into forgotten books and settings, so I am curious what other people's processes are.
Great Videos. I like the Forgotten Realms a lot because of the old baldur's gate and icewind dale games. So its all about the time of troubles for me.
All the ancient lore is so confusing. Thanks for your videos. The Netheril storyline is very cool and should really be used more in games.
I used to stick to Elven or Dwarven ruins....a waste of potential with all those cool flying cities crashed about.
That's how I always felt, love the magical cities of the Netherese. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching :D
And it's a primordial. Definitely _not,_ in any way shape or form, a balrog.
100% not a Balrog :P
But there is a fight on a stone bridge with a balor, lightning sword and fire whip included.
Though your first couple of videos seem to gloss the early histories these have gotten increasingly better. This is really great stuff!!
You are doing an amazing job here.
Thanks so much!!
So in gauntlegrim they battled forces of Asmodeus and drow... As well as bird people who dominated the place... What I was wondering is... There seem to be no trace of the illiads invasion (who are hive minded to a certain point, very messy, uses a huge blob of flesh as a central brain and slaves who would certainly leave traces ... In stone or in bones...), Or the human invasion... Or the orc attacks... There were many dwarven ghosts still fighting on too... Why is that?
The events of gauntlegrim happens near 1350 ad ... So....?
Love the video. Keep it going.
Originally the plural of phaerimm was phaerimm. In later editions they dumbed down some things, and made all plurals use -s, hence "phaerimms". Many fans bristled at this change. Personally I prefer the earlier usage.
Thank you Jorphdan!
sweet azuth seems almost like a magic user version of beowolf
looool... I am just starting to read the Salvatore's Neverwinter series... and daaaaamn... that primordial is from the Dawn War, so old... wow... no wonder he is causing so much destruction.
Well Wizards had so many horrible inconsistencies in their lore LOL. How are primevals, still in the prime material realm when they were supposed to be separated out during the sundering? The only one left in that room should be the one who made the deal because he betrayed the others during the war and has domain over that jungle Dinosaur Island. Or is this the time period before the second sundering?. So confusing lol
any chance of a Mithril Hall video??
Are you going to revisit this to incorporate more recent texts? I'm in the middle of the Storm King's Thunder, which mentions it was a Drow city as well.
Updated videos would be fun, it's all just a matter of time and interest of the audience.
Lanthander once wanted to undo the split of Tymora and Besheba. He was nearly tricked to do something very foolish by Iyachtu Xvim, see Tymoras' Luck by Jeff Grubb and Kate Novak.
Love the series, but there were a couple of errors as it pertains to your history of Gauntlgrym. As stated in the series of books by RASalvatore, the water elementals that kept the fire primordial contained we supplied by the root system that stretched from Gauntlgrym to the Sea of Swords, through Illusk. The root system itself was constructed by arcanists of Netherlands utilizing power from the primordial itself (this is how Catti-brie, Gromph Baenre, and the other collected magic users were able to reconstruct the Hostower). The arcanists took residence in the initially constructed tower to safeguard that end of the containment system of the primordial, while the Delzoun dwarves held the Great Forge and the shutoff lever for that containment system.
Secondly, the other Delzoun settlements (i.e Citadel Adbar, Mirabar, Mithril Hall, Sundabar, etc.) were all settled because of the fall of Gauntlgrym. These dwarfholds didn't exist until the fall of Gauntlgrym and were the result of the exile of the remaining Delzoun clans.
You should do a video explaining what "year zero" was in the forgotten realms first.
Great idea. There are a lot of different calendars in Forgotten Realms, explaining them all would be fun.
I’m kind of sad WotC don’t provide more info from this time. Thank you for trying though! I like the story about Azuth
1:03 what Total War mod is that with the Dwarves in it 🤔
What city did drizzit and brounor find that had both orcs and dwarfs living in it
Please tell us more about "The Magister"
Is there an explanation as to how the Water Elementals summoned by the Arcane Brotherhood keep Maegera in a state of slumber?
Sweet. Keep it up.
Would love to know more about Moander
Why is the PH silent?
Good vid, gautrilim.
I kind of wanna know more about the primordials.
Lathander was in second edition, i believe...
Wait, so what event caused time to go from negative to positive DR?
The Dale Reckoning is the event that set the calendar most used in Faerun. You can learn more about it in this video!
th-cam.com/video/sJdHAlzpXDE/w-d-xo.html
great video as always. why have you not reach 1000 subs yet, I do not understand.
It's been slow but steady! Spread the word! I'd love to get to 1,000 and have some kind of give-away :D
Every time I hear about Mystra she's either dying, or getting laid.
What happens to people who pronounce the PH?
There are no reliable writings that have the backing of sage-reviewed support that our glorious Morning Lord ever did such callous and manipulative things. Truly, it sounds like propaganda to me. Murdane and Umberlee’s contest would have never gained even the slightest attention of Inspiration’s Dawn had it not threatened to plunge all of Abeir-Toril into disorder. The Wise Lathander strove to teach peace and tranquility to these unhinged “deities” but His work was shunned.
-Mala Halfsleigh, Cleric of Lathander The Dawn, 1483 DR
i can only read that word in the voice of Tim the Enchanter
Vibe check
4:32 uh... okay. kinda random duo there
Lathander started this war between the gods?
Generally yes, he was the cause of it but the specifics aren't known unless Wizards of the coast comes up with some lost piece of lore for us in the future. Still shrouded in mystery...
O__O WOW Now I know why they call him Buttander
What is the Name of DROW That Worship a DRAGON??? or is this a Myth???
how does a god drown?
Didn't Selûne become a goddess?
Selûne is a goddess yes, always was as far as I know~
Jorphdan OMG.....sephnpai noticed me.....
3:17 why did you raise your voice here? scared the shi outa me 😣😣
You should do more minor history.
Informational but not really much on Gauntlgrym
Engagement
I'm not sure, but I don't think it is "negative X DR", if it follows normal dating rules it should be "X years before DR".
Wait a sec. When is the Neverwinter game based on?
The dwarves dug too deeply and found and ancient fire demon?
*cough*lord the rings ripoff*cough*
The whole game legitimately was a LOTR ripoff. Nothing new.
I don't think you really need to state the ph is silent when you say your name is Jordan. Just say hello everybody Jordan here and every one automaticly knows the ph is silent.
Unless it's a stick.
Little advice, please stop swallowing right next to the microphone, it sounds disgusting
