  • Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad provides a comprehensive overview of the life and leadership of Abdurrahman Wahid, also known as Gus Dur, the former President of Indonesia.
Coming from a traditional Islamic Background, Wahid navigated the complexities of governing the world's most populous Muslim majority country with pragmatism, moderation and a deep understanding of both classical Islamic teachings and contemporary issues. Despite facing health challenges and political opposition, Wahid implemented reforms, promoted pluralism, and sought to reconcile diverse religious and ethnic groups. His legacy highlights the potential for traditional Islamic values to foster stability, pluralism, and progress in a modern context.

As an NU Activist, I am so thankful to Syaikh Murad for discussing about history of Islam in Indonesia, Colonialism, Nahdhatul Ulama, and our most respected Kyai, the late Gus Dur (lahul fatihah) in such beautiful and insighful lecture!! I am so addicted to your lectures since the time of Covid 19, alhamdulillah!

"Gitu aja ko repot?" ;) Gus Dur was so often lambasted for his very un-presidential countenance, but he was exactly what Indonesia (and I argue the world) needed in a leader.

Jazakum Allah, Syaikh. I had never imagined Syaikh would give a talk about Gusdur Rahimahu Allah.
The first time I watched Syaikh Abdul Hakim Murad was about 8 years ago. I was happy to know that there are many traditional Islamic scholaes in the west.
    Salam from Sunda, Indonesia.

I am Indonesian and I grew up in east Java not far from Pesantren Tebu Ireng Jombang where Gus Dusr was born. What the the speaker said about Gus Dur Leadership was generally true based on fact and was written in our History. If I can add about three most important figures discussed by the speaker were Ahmad Dahlan (The founder of Muhammadiyah organization), Hasyim Asyari (The founder of Nahdatul Ulama Organization), and Gus Dur (The The Fourth President of Indonesia also the Grandson of Hasyim Asyari). They all brought tolerance and right pathway of Islam based on Prophet Muhammad teaching through 4 Islamic teaching Mazab (Hanafi, hambali, maliki, and safii). Here we fight or abolish radicalism in Islam principles. Islam flourishes side by side with 4 other religions. 90% population hold islam. Like his Grandfather, Gus Dur has many miracles which difficult to understand or observed for it's beyond our understanding. Later, all of his prophetic come true such as Prabowo will be the next president today

I live in Lombok island (the east of Bali island in Indonesia) where the indigenous people are 100% muslim (the population is around 3 million), our tribe is called Sasak which means "The One". To qualify as a Sasak person one should be a Muslim and must be born to a Sasak family. Our island is also known as the island of a thousands mosques but we actually have many more than 1.000 mosques.

Abdurrahman Wahid as known as Gus Dur is a former president of Indonesia, also known as the father of pluralism because he really appreciates diversity, especially ethnic, religious and racial diversity and also the importance of respecting each other's differences as a diverse nation. Thank you Sir, for discussing the topic of Gus Dur. Assalamualaikum Warrahmatullahi Wabarakatuh, greetings from Indonesia 😊

I'm interested in British Islam and really love your books, been to Cambridge once, brought a collection poems of A. Quilliam.... I'm so happy that people in Cambridge also appreciate our culture, it's like two different worlds yet united by Islam.... I hope one day I can attend your lecture in person

From the reference to Hajj in older days in this discussion, It came to my mind that the purpose of Hajj for those Muslims who could afford it by health and money is to keep the uniformity of Deen across the globe and Pan-Isalmsium. Maybe Allah wants Muslims from every corner of the world should meet each other at Macca and Madina and learn from each other worldly knowledge and religious knowledge and take it back to their people and area for the betterment of entire humanity. What is a big way for Allah Pak to promote deen and worldly education through Hajj. The reference to classes in Macca before and after Hajj is a testimonial to this.
I am sure Hajj was another tool to keep uniformity of deen across the globe.
Maybe learned Ulema would shed more light on this topic

As-salamu aleykum, thank you sheikh for this wonderful talk. Could you please educate us about the turbulent experiences faced by Muslims in Cyprus since the British took over in the late 1800s when they leased Cyprus from the Ottomans for a century. Unfortunately, this led to the curtailing of Islam amongst Turkish Cypriots, which has led to them becoming probably one of the most secular Muslims in the world. However, despite this there has been a revival of Turkish Cypriots who are now observant of Islam especially among the younger generations and it seems especially the case in the UK diaspora. Could you also please educate us about the most prominent Turkish Cypriot Muslim sheikh of recent times Sheikh Nazim and his life and how he influenced the spread of Islam in Cyprus and how he resisted secular Turkey’s turkification of islam with its ‘Turkish ezan’. He has also been influential globally as well. If you could do this it would be amazing and inshaAllah eye opening for Turkish Cypriots worldwide. JazakumAllahu khair, thank you for your efforts Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad and team

Back in early 2015, i and my rural shalawat group went to annual gathering for remembering one of the most respected ulama in solo, indonesia. The crowds was about thousands fully packed the streets around the mosque in the center of solo city, recite shalawats and listen to the preach, and i didn't consider, the ulama preach using english language then translated to audience, was Sheikh Hisham, and i'm not about to know about him. many times, many years now in my 40's, suddenly i read alot about Sheikh Nazim and Sheikh Hisham, Sheikh Abdullah Faiz, Sheikh Syarafuddin from youtube, internet. Now in my wall there's prints of Sheikh Nazim and Sheikh Hisham met Gus Dur. Cyprus/Qubrus is beautiful country and Sheikh Nazim and Sheikh Hisham is in my heart.. it would be amazing listen the history of Sheikh Nazim from Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad, amazed by the detailed history of Gus Dur, our modern day ulama/kiyai and president that support the minority and humanity with his authority and we indonesians missed him so much..

Models of how many people or teachers are needed to get a lasting movement only hold up in face of ignoring exceptions.
Those who know and practice religion will have a better result than those who just have the material resources.
It is important to realize cultural origins of problems; rather than define them in terms of blood, soil, and religion.
It is important to have an idea of the different affect of the different groups that can evangelize.
Islam is the best unifying force for a constitution, if we look at how Islamic fundamentalism bans forcing religion and doesn't make it unfair against minorities-like so-called State Religion.
It would not only be tolerant of all actual material and psychological culture, but use it. That doesn't mean they will favor what can be done with these mindsets and technology.

So he came out of the presidential palace in t-shirt, shorts and sandals to "demystify" himself as a leader of the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, to calm down his supporters, avoiding the expected blood bath and chaos that might have happened.

The sultanate of Jogjakarta was Ottoman representative. The Dutch could never deformed the sultanate of Jogjakarta.
My opinion, the Hamengkubuwono IX was the most influencing person to the birth of republic of Indonesia. Some Javanese considered HB IX as a Kiai. Kiai is ulama, minority of them has a very extremely good relationship with Allah and i believe the HB IX was one of the minority.
The HB IX acted as a king, on the other hand he's also acted as religious leader.
A quality which the present sultan has lost it.

And what Gusdur is most famous for is his visionary ability, which can predict the future even with joking narratives ..
For example, when he met Jokowi when he was still very young and said that Jokowi would become president ..
In fact, Gusdur's biggest enemy was a political party called PDI, whose leadership was ousted by that party ..
However, after he died many years, Jokowi, who initially had no chance of becoming president, succeeded in becoming president after being invited to join the PDI party ..

Nahdlatul Ulama should learn a lot from this.. as like you said, Nahdlatul Ulama didn't really much develop on the philosophical work but in the other hand we urgently needed that modern interpretation of syncretism between Islam and our traditional culture values..
Recently we had a sort of like wave scholars or preachers that come from Saudi Wahhabism and a group of people called themselves "Habib" who is allegedly have a bloodline of Prophet Muhammad PBUH..
The problem is they kinda tries to infiltrate this syncretism and hijacks the institution like Pesantren from within with their ideology and personal interest. for example they calls peoples who only have different opinions about fatwa or fiqh as infidels/kafir. Or the "Habib" with their status as a descendants of the prophet can do whatever they want..
There's a practice which I think is really bizarre to see, where their follower kiss the seat their Habib used just for the sake of pursuing the "blessings" of the teaching.. or on the extreme case was the feces of their Kyai or Habib in pesantren.
