This is such an amazing technology to create so many cool smoke effects. My personal favourite is the dry ice effect. I also love the bubble smoke effect when dipped in bubble solution. 😍
@@m4tik I will say this seams to work straight away every time I pull it out if the bag, no matter how long it has sat in storage unused. Are you using the genuine fluid
@gaffergear i'm using the genuine fluid since i didn't found any valable "alternatives" here in France. At least they are distributed in Europe now, so the fluid is easy to come by.
Thanks for the video Andrew!! Just for the dry ice effect it would be worthy for me since it saves the pain of using the real deal!

I bought the Smoke genie and when the cheap knock offs came out i sold the knock offs and got the cheap ones. And while thesy do the job too for the fraction of the price the output is not comparable ... so if anybody has the same idea, if you need higher output the cheap 90€ ones do not have that much output.
Have always wanted to get the genie, it's just a bit out of my price range. but yes same situation here. Bought another knockoff for $100 and totally regretted it. It's not only weak, it smells really, really bad. Also very bad Customer service Had to throw it away after one use. Now interested in the smoke ninja, they seem to have just released the pro version for 199, wonder how that compares to the og Genie
Hi Andrew great video as always. I have 3 questions are you gonna keep these machines or shall I say would you use these smoke machines? Next have you thought of any cheaper alternatives for “proprietary”smoke juice? Last question where is the “not in the instruction manual button”? Can’t find it on their site
@@Filmgoblin I'll keep these, but I would only use them in small rooms for like one shot on a commercial, otherwise a real hazer should be used. I figure in that situation where the DP says "if only we had some haze" it would be handy to pull out. I haven't found any cheaper fluid. On the on-line instructions I couldn't find how to shut it off either. It looks off but the remote can turn it on.
@@gaffergear I have a couple cans of "atmosphere aerosol" for this scenario, feels a tad more cost effective and less faff than the genie for these situations. The art-dept applications do look really cool but not my wheelhouse. Enjoyed the video as always 👍
Hey Andrew, a couple of quick questions… what is the hang time like on the fog/haze, and have you noticed any sticky residue on surfaces in the room after use? Thank you for the review… top shelf as always. 🙏🏻
In a room it doesn't feel like it leaves a residue, but on products where it is directly applied, like the dry ice in the glass shot, you would need to clean it before a second take. Hang time is a good 10 to 15 minutes for a snoke machine look. But for haze you would definitely want some top up spirits to even it out about every 4 to 5 minutes. That's the results in my workshop which has a bit of a breeze going through it. You wouldn't want to haze a room for an 8 hour shoot with it!
If I remember right, you push the red button thrice to turn it off. But I'm not sure how "off" that really is so I always just pull the batteries from mine too.
In Australia haze is the domain of Art Department because it is an effect In front of the lens. They mostly use Rosco or big brand units that cost upwards of $3K. They must be worth the money because they never fail and can haze a large studio in 10 minutes with a perfect even atmosphere.
Be careful with those, especially the cheap ones can get too hot and burn the Fluid. That leads to very toxic fumes in the air. With that said... if you need LOTS of smoke outdoors there isnt really an alternative.
@dominikhaberstock good to know. I was hospitalised by bad smoke. I had low oxygen in my blood and ended up in the ER. The production wanted black smoke, not white smoke .I went to the hospital after the shoot because I couldn't find a doctor that was still open. That probably saved me from brain damage

@@dominikhaberstock thanks for the advice man! What would you recommend?
@@gaffergear Be sure to test the low-end dimming on the 1200x, it is amazing! Someone measured 42 lux at 1 meter at 0.1% at 5600K. So now this can comfortably replace a smaller light in case we need to use it for a low key scene! For comparison a Nanlux Evoke 900C can only go down to 4200 lux at the same measurement!
Nice review Andrew! I had another brand (Ulanzi) a while back and it was terrible. the remote didn’t work and it just stopped working after a couple shoots, had to throw it away. This is quite a bit more expensive though, but it seems like it outputs quite a bit more smoke than the other guys. Have you done a test on how much space it fills a room with the smoke genie? Like would it work for anything above 800 square feet?
I got a similar band the Lensgo SmokeB.. The units are similar, but the SmokeB has magnets to hold the capsule heat protector and the the fan magnetically attaches ontop.
Vape technology has come a long way

I own the v1 from the Kickstarter and using it pretty often as hazer, it just works. Just a cleaning from time to time.

Usually vape devices could be shut off with 5 clicks of the fire button )
"With an inspector gadget like antenna." 🤣

@Filmgoblin
You can mix it yourself, I've been doing it for years.

I have one, it hangs similar to any other hazer,,, great for
Small room… did not notice residue but was also not running for days in same location

Well Inspector Gadget is my nickname ons set... so i guess I'm obligated to buy one now 😂

Just buy some Propylene Glycol and forget the Lexmark style fleecing!

Haha that fluid price is bullshit. That’s literally just unflavored vape juice. Should cost a nickel.
yeah you can probably use any combination of PG/VG, depending on how dense you want it to be, costs next to nothing in bulk.

The Lensgo one smell really bad though. like burnt metal. you get headaches after hazing a room in a while. Not great for full day shoots.
This thing is way overpriced.
I use the €100,- ULANZI
And the Makita DAS180 as fan, much more powerful.
Hell no, mine broke within 2 shoots, the remote is so unresponsive; it’s not usable
@@tryscience4367 I'm sorry to hear, mine just works fine. And the remote doesn't cause any problems either, but the range is not the best
