all the old Benz's were like this. in Australia my father purchased a new 67 280s and it was about 60+ klm faster than anything the police had at the time. i remember a couple times mum telling dad off for getting chased out on the highway. back in 1970 there was almost no traffic on interstates compared to today.
I had a 330D W123 from 1980, I sold it about an year ago (no time to enjoy it as much as I wanted), and it was making EXACTLY that noise after 30 years :) Though I greatly doubt it was able to go over 160kph... But it did manage 140 :P No turbo, aspirated :)
I had the successor. You could steer it with your little finger at 200 km/h. I really tried it out several times. But the rims of this one are really ugly.

W 114 models the automatic as an option was available even for a 55 bhp 200 Diesel, steering servo was also option and you had to pay up to 1000 DEM extra or 250 Dollars… the 280 had steering servo as stock, perhaps even 250 … but the stock price of a 280 was at least twice the price of a 200 diesel…

The whole car has been completely redone. There's nothing stock about it. You can even see the empty left door. Most likely whole interior re-do. It looks brand new

Brings back memories. Me and my mate , two 18 year olds , were hitchhicking in Germany back in '73 and were picked up by an old bloke in one of these just outside Dortmund. Couldn't believe the speed he was driving and calm as a cucumber. 180 to 200 all the way to Hamburg.
Best I've done with my US-spec '73 W114 280c is 95MPH (150km/h) somewhere between Portland and Seattle last year. Best damn freeway cruiser I've ever owned.
This may not look impressive but driving at 200 km/h with virtually no noise and with such a stability was witchcraft back in the days, and even today it is still incredible.
The Thunderwars Yes, if one reads reviews from car magazines back then all testers are amazed how stable and composed the car is at 200km/h. This was at a time when supercars felt twitchy and nervous above 200km/h.
When these cars were launched I was a young boy, I did not realise how well engineered they were, here we are half a century later and the same car can still hold its own on the Autobahn.
My father used to own w124 250D from 1991.. What I've realized then with these "old" Merc's is that top speed of the car is where the speedometer ends.. No cheats no nothing.. if it says 300, it's 300, if it says 200, it's 200. Simple. Great car ! :)

My grandpa owns a W124 E280 Automatic from '94 and still drives it every day. I'm absolutely in love with that car and if one day he can't drive it anymore, I definetly want to take care of it. It's in perfect shape with only 160k km and still has the first exhaust.
My dad used to own w124 200d from 1992 manual 4-gears transs. Top speed was 170 km/h. Once it reached 185 km/h with gas instead of diesel and it made 600 kms without any problem and any damage. After that day it worked for other 12 years with us,reached 550.000 km on the odometer and still was able to reach 165-170 km/h with ease. All parts were original,the engine,transmission,exhaust,friction! I miss that car a lot!
I highly doubt it! Manufacturers can set the speedometer to be around 10% higher for safety reasons. Also, as your tyre wears down the rolling radius changes. Over or under inflating your tyres also has an effect. My friend in highway patrol stated that you can get away with 10% plus 2 mph for those very reasons. So no car is 100% accurate, 100% of the time ... unless you change your tires and keep the same psi of air in those tires after every trip to the shops. So just because you're holding a car at 200 kph on the speedometer, doesn't mean you're doing 200 kph
BMW & Mercedes in the mid 20th century agreed to limit their cars to 155 mph/250 kmh. I'm guessing due to safety or whatever, this is correct for cars from the factory. Even removal of the limiter be it mechanical or electrical yields very little gains. Gear ratios meant the speed wasn't much more than the agreed threshold. PS, this agreement is still active & covers a few other makers. Only a few special models have the limit removed as stock, the one that comes is the CLK GTR.
The ease with which it continues to accelerate after 140kmh rivals many of the newer cars you drive. I had to replay that sequence about 5 times to truly believe it. Now I want one of these cars! I've always wanted an older Benz, but I was unwilling to go quite that far back...before this. The lines and design are so much more elegant than 8-s & 90s MB.

It still is today, you just have to buy the biggest possible engine configuration. Car manufacturers don't put a different speedometer in the same car with a different engine, they just use the one for the biggest engine. It's for simple economical reasons
Most impressive about this car is the M110 engine, an absolute masterpiece. Maximum power at 5800-6000 rpm and still smooth and quiet. And almost immortal. No matter how you push this machine, it just won't seize up!
Yes a good way to discribe the car. I owned and drove an e 280 in 1973 typical mercedes they Were so rock solid and quiet, it was easy to forget how fast you were traveling. Due to the nature of my business, I spent most of my time driving up and down the autobahn Hamburg, Hannover. Munich . Great cars Just to add, mercedes was the only car that Could stand the daily stress, and also have a sales value with 350000 km on the clock

The W114 was NEVER that fast, especially not with those wheels. Daimler advertised it with 200 km/h. This one DEFINITELY isn't original anymore or the sepeedometer is really crappy as f*ck which i don't believe.
@@upliftingsiren: It's just the truth. Maximum speed was 200 km/h back then. And if you believe in a higher max. speed with wider tires, then you also believe in Santa Clause or the Easter bunny. Wider tires eat power, so it should even be slower than 200 km/h. Can't beat facts.
This was a dream to watch. Thanks for sharing. My first car was a 1971 Mercedes 250. The interior looked to be exactly the same. I was a young solider at the time and had it shipped to Germany for my first tour. The underbody rust was too much so it wouldn't pass inspection. I was forced to sell it. I had driven her from Monterey, CA to Annapolis, MD. I still think about her.....33 years later.
Mercedes held on to it's class, the newer generation S Class wheel has kind of a similar style going on, thats why it would fit, they just kept the classyness
This brought me a lot of memories, my father had one of this and that was my first car (w114 280 manual), it was amazing how it accelerated and took corners, also the ride was so confortable. I have never forgotten the sound of that six cilinder engine at 6500 rpm's and the face of some friends who had american cars that couldn't even dream about doing so many high rpm's on their cars. That engine had an oil cooler, and used 7 liters, that was a lot of oil to replace.

I wouldn't want to crash one into a modern vehicle, but the build quality and craftsmanship in this car is far greater than any new Mercedes. It was designed to be driven like this AND last longer than a 3 year lease. You can't say that about a new one.
I have new E 300 de estate 4 months old and last month my wife touched the charging flap cover with her leg it snapped off the hinge is plastic if I was metal it would just bend a normal fuel flap is probably opened once every one or two weeks say 50 times a year a charging flap is going to be opened twice a day say 700 times a year which one would you make stronger

Ich hatte den Merceses 280 SE Bj 2070 mit 180 PS und bei 200 war Schluss und mein Neuer 350 SLC V8 mit Schaltung von AMG und ein Gang mehr , war die Grenze 240 kmh und er lag wie ein Brett , durch den langen Radstand 45 cm mehr als der SL und das waren Welten , aber im Regen unfahrbar , bin aber mit der Kiste 400.000 km gefahren und ohne Unfall , aber Repaturen in der ganzen Zeit 35.000.-DM ohne Inspektionen , aber die Kiste hatt richtig Spass gemacht im Sommer , das war ein Porsche Killer und habe diese Kiste nie vergessen . Heute fahre ich den Tuareg TDI V8 mit 800 Drehmoment und macht auch Spass !
@@timmuller2599 The gearbox limits the 600 W140 to 288 km/h, I think it can get close at least (without the 250 km/h limiter). The facelifted version has 5 gears instead of 4, that one probably has 300+ km/h gearing but not enough power to reach it.
@@atarvhegde5210 No, that's 280 (without E), same double cam engine but carb instead of fuel injection. Besides, all /8 compact with 6 cylinder petrol engines are W114. W115 are the 4 cylinder petrol and all 4 and 5 cylinder Diesel models.
Everyone wishes they had highways like Germany thats why. I would know Ive never been to Germany and I still wish we had our own autobahn. Government here makes too much money on speed traps to make highways limitless though.

You don't even see new cars in the states drive that quickly, because everyone slugs along at 60-70 mph on highways due to everyone being ignorant and not caring for traffic rules, blocking all lanes, etc. There's no order at all like there is on the autobahn, where you can safely drive quickly for a long time. On top of that, drive more than 80 mph in any american car from the 70's, and they're basically a death-trap. The had super soft suspension, terrible body rigidity, terrible brakes, terrible suspension design and geometry, etc. They were designed to cruise at low speeds and have the suspension as soft as possible. Combine that with them being very heavy and very physically large, and you have a recipe for disaster at high speeds. They had a boaty feeling even before 60 mph, let alone above 120, not that any of them would do 120 to begin with, considering their 6 or 7 liter V8's were producing like 140 hp. None of the american cars from that period were designed for these speeds, because there's no place to drive them like that. They felt unstable and unsafe way before 120, and this mercedes was doing almost 140 actually. 230 km/h. And it's not even about doing the speed, it's about how smooth, refined and stable it is doing that speed. This car is more comfortable, stable, refined and quiet at 120 mph than any cadillac from the period would be at 60 mph.
This car is magnificent, it's an immortal masterpiece, so sad to see only a few of them today, but that's also what makes it beautiful. Thanks you for this video

We don’t have holy cows or any other farm animals on our motorways in my country but we have something almost as dangerous: Women (usually blond) in micro cars in the left lane at 100 km/h where the speed limit is 130 km/h and people reading/writing text messages while driving.
the autobahn is a straight line so the only thing you need to do is keep it in a straight line and as you can see people are displined in the way they drive.
A good driver is confident enough to know how to gauge his connection to the steering wheel enough to manipulate it with his hands at will and knows how to quickly shift to that correct position automatically.
Mr. Butterworth, maybe, but this ~50 y.o. Mercedes definitely looks awesome, having a pristine and timeless design, easily doing 200 km/h, is still much ahead of a number of other/later cars.
What is a vintage car? That is kinda (only really know the w116) a top end (like the S-class) car from the 70's. Normal at the time and build for worse roads.

This is how luxury car accelerated. Not much noise, no hard bang against the limiter, no climbing on the cam. Just torque pushing you at the same rate from 0 to 200. Amazing indeed.

I can comfortably cruise at 200km/h in my 2018 1.8 Corolla. (tires need to be at around 37 Psi)

It gets even better if you watch it sitting on an XRocker gaming chair, that has a built-in tactile transducer, a bass speaker, and regular speakers. You can feel and hear more of the road imperfections. It is as if you’re being him.

The W114 was NEVER that fast, especially not with those wheels. Daimler advertised it with 200 km/h. This one DEFINITELY isn't original anymore or the sepeedometer is really crappy as f*ck which i don't believe.

It's just the truth. Maximum speed was 200 km/h back then. And if you believe in a higher max. speed with wider tires, then you also believe in Santa Clause or the Easter bunny. Wider tires eat power, so it should even be slower than 200 km/h. Can't beat facts.
This was a dream to watch. Thanks for sharing. My first car was a 1971 Mercedes 250. The interior looked to be exactly the same. I was a young solider at the time and had it shipped to Germany for my first tour. The underbody rust was too much so it wouldn't pass inspection. I was forced to sell it. I had driven her from Monterey, CA to Annapolis, MD. I still think about her.....33 years later.

This brought me a lot of memories, my father had one of this and that was my first car (w114 280 manual), it was amazing how it accelerated and took corners, also the ride was so confortable. I have never forgotten the sound of that six cilinder engine at 6500 rpm's and the face of some friends who had american cars that couldn't even dream about doing so many high rpm's on their cars. That engine had an oil cooler, and used 7 liters, that was a lot of oil to replace.

I wouldn't want to crash one into a modern vehicle, but the build quality and craftsmanship in this car is far greater than any new Mercedes. It was designed to be driven like this AND last longer than a 3 year lease. You can't say that about a new one.
I have new E 300 de estate 4 months old and last month my wife touched the charging flap cover with her leg it snapped off the hinge is plastic if I was metal it would just bend a normal fuel flap is probably opened once every one or two weeks say 50 times a year a charging flap is going to be opened twice a day say 700 times a year which one would you make stronger

Ich hatte den Merceses 280 SE Bj 2070 mit 180 PS und bei 200 war Schluss und mein Neuer 350 SLC V8 mit Schaltung von AMG und ein Gang mehr , war die Grenze 240 kmh und er lag wie ein Brett , durch den langen Radstand 45 cm mehr als der SL und das waren Welten , aber im Regen unfahrbar , bin aber mit der Kiste 400.000 km gefahren und ohne Unfall , aber Repaturen in der ganzen Zeit 35.000.-DM ohne Inspektionen , aber die Kiste hatt richtig Spass gemacht im Sommer , das war ein Porsche Killer und habe diese Kiste nie vergessen . Heute fahre ich den Tuareg TDI V8 mit 800 Drehmoment und macht auch Spass !

@@timmuller2599 The gearbox limits the 600 W140 to 288 km/h, I think it can get close at least (without the 250 km/h limiter). The facelifted version has 5 gears instead of 4, that one probably has 300+ km/h gearing but not enough power to reach it.

@@atarvhegde5210 No, that's 280 (without E), same double cam engine but carb instead of fuel injection. Besides, all /8 compact with 6 cylinder petrol engines are W114. W115 are the 4 cylinder petrol and all 4 and 5 cylinder Diesel models.

A 70s car doing 200+ with an ease and steering is still so centered and very little play...only a German car can do
Its only 120ish mph with easy bends. He's moving quick, but we see this all the time in the states.
yes amazing the driver skill level high speed in pretty much a straight line is off the scale skillful while I sit more comfortablly in a leather seat! And yes only Germans can do it only lets forget they stole sorry patented Italain common rail technology of the 70's. It never fails to amaze me in other parts of the world what counts for skill!

You don't even see new cars in the states drive that quickly, because everyone slugs along at 60-70 mph on highways due to everyone being ignorant and not caring for traffic rules, blocking all lanes, etc. There's no order at all like there is on the autobahn, where you can safely drive quickly for a long time. On top of that, drive more than 80 mph in any american car from the 70's, and they're basically a death-trap. The had super soft suspension, terrible body rigidity, terrible brakes, terrible suspension design and geometry, etc. They were designed to cruise at low speeds and have the suspension as soft as possible. Combine that with them being very heavy and very physically large, and you have a recipe for disaster at high speeds. They had a boaty feeling even before 60 mph, let alone above 120, not that any of them would do 120 to begin with, considering their 6 or 7 liter V8's were producing like 140 hp. None of the american cars from that period were designed for these speeds, because there's no place to drive them like that. They felt unstable and unsafe way before 120, and this mercedes was doing almost 140 actually. 230 km/h. And it's not even about doing the speed, it's about how smooth, refined and stable it is doing that speed. This car is more comfortable, stable, refined and quiet at 120 mph than any cadillac from the period would be at 60 mph.

We don’t have holy cows or any other farm animals on our motorways in my country but we have something almost as dangerous: Women (usually blond) in micro cars in the left lane at 100 km/h where the speed limit is 130 km/h and people reading/writing text messages while driving.
the autobahn is a straight line so the only thing you need to do is keep it in a straight line and as you can see people are displined in the way they drive.

A good driver at this speed holds the steering wheel with both hands at the correct position.
A good driver is confident enough to know how to gauge his connection to the steering wheel enough to manipulate it with his hands at will and knows how to quickly shift to that correct position automatically.

This is how luxury car accelerated. Not much noise, no hard bang against the limiter, no climbing on the cam. Just torque pushing you at the same rate from 0 to 200. Amazing indeed.
