The lyrics are used very economically and carefully from my reading. 'An empty stadium yells man on man on', gives a full picture of the pressure and passion inflicted on kids by adults shouting the usual football cliches in what is really a meaningless game among kids thrown into it. And the descriptions of the actions taking place add drama and humour 'somehow it gets bundled underneath my feet' in what sounds like a typically scrappy and dreadful kids' game. But to each kid, these moments stay with you for the rest of the week at least. Unless of course there's fish n chips involved.
the line “ I reckon dad is really disappointed with me” hits powerfully. I always forget it’s not so much a song about soccer and more a song about a father and child’s hope and love for one another.
I can't stop smiling at how dramatic he makes that bit where he misses the chance. And then they concede right after through his legs haha. Love Richard so much, can't wait for the record
My friend Peter absolutely LOVES this song. It's definitely the song he'd marry if you could marry songs. I don't want to marry it but I'd definitely attend the evening event.
I will listen to Richard Dawson many many times. Every time there is something new. Initially it's the lyrics. Get that sorted (and it takes a while for my slow old brain) - then there's the music - which is so beautiful. Then there's the lyrics again - with the music. Love.
Tim K well ok - it’s clearly full of football jargon. But to me - a deep thinker and lyric analyser - it’s telling a story about a man / woman who is experiencing some drama/troubles in his / her life and isn’t handling it very well! Missed chances. Ego. Frustration. Disappointment. Just my interpretation. That’s the beauty of music!
@@tenaciousd1347 It's a kid who is the subject of unrealistic expectations from a father who is overinvested in a football match of no real consequence. The kid knows his dad is trying to put a brave face on afterwards, hiding his disappointment.
Very unusual, a real talent wrapped up in nuttiness and the surreal. Much of Richard’s delivery reminds me of XTC, another band who were prepared to take an alternative route.
Hadn't come across Richard before I saw him with his guitar whilst waiting for Bonnie Prince Billy headlining at EOTR festival. I was bombarded with high pitch vocal changes and was unsure I would hold out until he sang this. He got a great reception and also some nice comments by Bonnie Prince Billy. I came home with Two Halves in my memory and a mental note to check him out. Thanks Richard.
It weirdly reminds me of those episodic Genesis songs from the early 1970's featured on the likes of Foxtrot or Nursery Cryme. In a good way obviously cos Richard is an ace songwriter. Oh and its always fish and chips.
A genuinely beautiful and moving song. Been listening to it for over a year now and keep coming back to it, even playing a version of sorts on my guitar over morning coffees. Thanks for this beautiful piece of art which captures a very particular human experience.
Fuck...that chord change, on the transition over the lyrics "somehow it gets bundled underneath my feet". That is a sublime chord change. I can't think of anything else like it.
My favorite detail about this song is that during most of the “man on man on” parts the vocals are layered, representing not just him but a whole team of people trying to win. But for the final “man on” part after they’ve lost, the layering disappears and leaves just one voice left, because he’s the only one who has to worry about his dad. It’s very subtle but adds a lot to the emotional core of the song.
Wow. Those eggs look absolutely great. I'd love to see this charted out on a page, I wonder how many different bits there are. It's like putting several song ideas into one. Folk equivalent of Prog Rock.
I find Richard kind of inspiring, because I struggle with lyrics, but Richard shows you can just sing any old bollocks and as long as you can squeeze in a melody, then the lyrics don't need any rhyme or meter or rhythm. I might write a song using lyrics comprised exclusively of the words on the back of shampoo bottles and packets of crisps.
Get this before the match instead of the awful version of Blaydon Races they pipe out before the game. Or just get Richard Dawson to sing the Blaydon Races live before every home game.
lol , first thing i thought of was peter gabriel era genesis plus radiohead . this guys songs are too long winded though , could do with some editing imho .
I have 'liked' it, but it is too painful to acknowledge. I mean, why would I listen again to something, whilst, fair enough is accurate, but at the same time traumatising? For both me and my brother. I know you don't mean it, but good gosh!
This is fucking brilliant
GeoWizard and Richard Dawson are two of my top interests so this comment made my bloody day!
And now it’s in Dribbling Britain! Nice one :)
@@ConsPopov used this song aswell i know Dawson from that series
this is how I discovered this gem! Thank you.
Random coincidence. I also love geowizard and this tune! What we do need though is more amynedd..
The way he constructs a song around mundane lyrics like these is SO GENIUS and SO FUNNY.
A real artist right here.
Honestly, it seems he write mundane lyrics around a nice constructed song, in that order
I wouldn't call the lyrics mundane at all. He captures something integral in a lot of his songs

i find his lyrics are always tinted with quite a sad tone under the funnynes and mundane topics he describes
I imagine it to be something that he wrote as a kid and thought 'fuck it, turn this into song ey?'
This is the title track for FIFA 20, surely.
Or for use in a montage for the early years of a story mode
That would be perfect
It's too original to be on FIFA 20
the line “ I reckon dad is really disappointed with me” hits powerfully. I always forget it’s not so much a song about soccer and more a song about a father and child’s hope and love for one another.
I also noticed; that last chorus is the only one where the vocal track isn't doubled. It's more flat, and to me, adds a more gripping element to it.
Aye, on the right day that chokes me up.
I cried a lot listening to this! Just can't describe how beautiful and relatable it is.
Greetings from Brazil.
boa, parceiro

"You're not Lionel Messi, just pass the bloody ball"
lol
Should be updated now really, you’re not Lionel messi, just pay your bloody taxes

Aren't you thinking of Wichita Lineman?
This is the most Richard Dawson thing I have ever heard
I must admit at this point, this is one of the best songs I have ever heard
As soon as I put this on my 2 year old comes running. So happy he has great taste in music like his old man!
Just heard this on bbc radio 6. Ooft. Lyrically amazing!! Laughed and cried! So clever.

David Sumtinelse the poor people that think this is actually about football!! It’s amazing! So clever.

Criminally underrated singer. Real humanism
The album is truly astonishing - all as good as this
That line ‘I reckon dad is really disappointed with me’ hits home beautifully.

THIS STORY IS SO GOD DAMN RELATABLE
This album blew me away. Can't stop listening to it! Thank you Richard.
Ha! I went to King's Priory 45 years ago and we were crap at football back then!
I wake up with this song in my head every morning, I mean every morning
It weirdly reminds me of those episodic Genesis songs from the early 1970's featured on the likes of Foxtrot or Nursery Cryme. In a good way obviously cos Richard is an ace songwriter. Oh and its always fish and chips.
My strange morning needed this weirdness
I can relate to this
bro i swear this is the best song ive heard in a while this is outstanding

What a piece of art.

A modern folk raconteur - can't stop listening. Making the ordinary stuff extraordinary. So happy I found his music this year!
The "come on come on" part is so cute
Every Sunday morning game beautifully and poetically put.

Spot on I was trying to think who this reminded me of and that's nailed it.
His singing when he hits the high notes reminds me also of Julian Cope in his more melodic moods.
@kiloscott This comment gave me clues to find a genre of music i have been so desperate to find !! epic !
Absurd how good this is
Hate football. Love this song. Love the video.
Richard Dawson - I've been trying to contact you. I will fly you out to California to provide the number to my wedding
Steven Austin she despises his work
Maybe Domino Records could get you Animal Collective instead?
Adam Kimball Animal Collective can play at the divorce court

Don't know why, but I feel really nostalgic listening to this. Tom (geoguesser) made a good choice to use this.
