I must say, I really appreciate the effort you guys put in to ensure a podcast is out every week. Even if it's just 3 of you or whatever it is, there is sincerity involved and I really appreciate it. Especially, cause this is the highlight of my Tuesday.

Edit : Jokes apart. After watching the video I feel this comment needs to be more relevant.
1. It doesn't matter what kind of photos/information you upload (though it'll be useful to generate more accurate profile of yours). Its about what kind of posts you like, what pages you are following, what posts do you share. This is what reveals what are your political views/travel plans etc, and thus ideal data set.
2. Facebook (and Google for that matter) has an AI algorithm that automatically scans the pictures and tag them with what those pictures might probably be about. Eg. Two people smiling, group of 8 people near water body. You can actually look what are these pictures tagged with using a chrome plug-in called facebook computer vision.
3. Having a fake news army sounds good but is extremely difficult. There are just enormous number of posts going around. Also even if you delete one account nothing is stopping the person from creating another account.
4. Most of the things sng wants to do with their Facebook involve huge amount of personal data processing. Which might not go well with the idea of 'complete privacy.'
What I am trying to say is that solutions to these problems are not as easy as they sound. People need to be more concerned about their data and these issues in general (Karan seemed most aware of them. Kautuk just behaved like a dumb person).

This whole thing is freaking crazy. I work in this field and the kind of specific targeting you can do to narrow your audience is actually insane. If you want to know Facebook s biography of you go to your settings and go to ads now look at my categories and look at your whole life's description in ten lines.

Thanks, didn't know that. I don't understand what's crazy about it though, it's open knowledge that your data is being collected so you get targeted ads. People are only freaking out because it was used to push political propoganda this time, which users can choose not to get influenced by.
gargee basak I don't mind advertisers knowing what stuff I like/consume and shopping preferences. I'm not comfortable with them knowing my phone, card numbers.

To understand how data leak actually works take example of Adhar in last few mins of podcast. Just by Koutuks saying Zuckerberg few times Adhar pronounced giraffe as JIRAF.....
Now the leaked data is gonna feed you processed/ altered info in your subconscious mind to do things....
6:43 You're wrong here. No Android phone comes with Root Access by default (Google doesn't allow it). You have to go through a tedious manual process to be able to grant Root access on your Android phone (equivalent to a Jailbreak). Secondly, you need SMS permission to read that OTP. Root permission has nothing to do with SMS.
Kautuk! You keep saying personally you're ok with Facebook acquiring your data as long as everything is free. But if people like you enable such stuff and are ok with it because you think you won't be influenced by fake or targeted ads because you're a well informed individual, there are people who get easily influenced by such stuff because Facebook is actually a news portal for them and the consequences of ill-informed decisions will eventually affect you too!!
The feature (6:22) of reading the SMS for an OTP can also be done without giving root access, it is a basic feature, your phone doesn't have to be rooted. Also a fact most of the legit apps check if a device is rooted and disallow themselves to install if found yes because it lets other apps to use the data of your app. Also Android and iOs are very strong as OS in securing data even if apps try to use data illegally. I know there are various methods to invade privacy but it is not a new concept, it has been happening since centuries, just the mode has been changed.
The debate over data privacy is too big to have on a comment or on a podcast, but I believe the whole issue with FB was a bit of a Witch Hunting. Also, I am happy that we dodged the FB net neutrality bullet last year, for proposing that they can be held cruel and gulty.

There are people who are working with AI which can detect fake news. It is still not in it's perfect stage, but it will improve with time. I met a Researcher from China who is working now with this and they had fare share of success with news articles. They are planning to use High Performance Computing which will make this faster and more accurate.

What I understood from the testimony video, there was some prof who created an app that requires you to feed in answers to various personality related questions and then give you a result summary of the same. This app via facebook reached out to a lot of people. The prof gathered this data (people's personal info from fb + their personality traits as answered in the questionnaire) and sold it to a University (not sure) which then in collaboration with foreign parties used this data to guide the entire campaign and influence people. Somebody do correct me if i'm wrong here.
