I have a confession to make when it comes to Paul Hindemith: I HATE learning his music. But, if I get across that particular bridge for whatever reason, I absolutely love playing his music and/or listening to his music.
It’s that moment in rehearsal, after the gruelling practice at home when you realize…..”my God, this is truly a masterpiece!” It makes it all worth while.
A long-time favorite. A delightful work full of personality. The accentuated folk influence mixed with Hindemith's sense of quirkiness. A winner. And what a performance! It does justice to the work.
This piece which I had not heard before today is, for me, the most satisfying Hindemith piece. It may be his masterwork. Not a turgid measure in the entire piece. This performance is a gift to the world through TH-cam. Bravo!
... two heigh estimated artists in the world of music - Paavo Järvi and Antoine Tamestit - playing the viola-concerto in collaboration by the well-known HR-RSO Frankfurt/Main, one of the cities, in which the young composer lived as front-member oft the famous Frankfurt-Opera-House-and Museums-Orchestra. Both musicians are award-winners of the International Paul-Hindemith-Prize of the City of Hanau, where Hindemith was born: Järvi= 2012, Tamestit= 2022) ), playing tribution for their engagement, concering Paul Hindemith as one of the great composers of the 2Oth century...
What an incredible performance! I loved the interpretation and clarity displayed by both the soloist and the orchestra... this is a extremely difficult piece to put together. Usually the third movement feels like it is going to derail, but the orchestra and soloist really nailed it!
This is truly a brilliant performance by all involved! I had the good fortune to be the trombonist in an orchestra that performed this work many years ago, but not like this! Thank you for sharing!
This is one of my favorite viola concerti, and may I say it was "done to a turn" by Antoine, Paavo and the FRSO. I especially enjoy the humor in the second movement which I understand depicts a cuckoo sitting on a fence, one of four folk songs Hindemith used to full effect in composing this masterwork.
Over all very well done, most parts that usually get rushed aren't for the most part, and all the accidental were pretty clean, the pitzacatto (sp?) is about the best I have ever heard, ever.
This concerto for viola and orchestra makes use of popular tunes, but they are marged with other elements in the music, so the result is a quite astonishing score. The orchetration is excellent - which is difficult in a concerto for viola and large orchestra.
Wiki: Der Schwanendreher: Meaning of title The original context of "swan turner" in medieval times is that of a cook's assistant who would turn the handle of a spit on which swans were roasting.
I beg to differ,@organboi: I didn't think he was overly dramatic. His face was hard to watch, because he seemed to be focusing so hard, but I feel his body movements made up for it. Not sure what to think of his facial expressions. I think he is a pretty great violist, though.
Slds.
I've always liked this work. I have to say however, that it sounds dreadfully difficult for the soloist. I know that the viola was Hindemith's "home" instrument. He certainly did not write this easy for himself did he? sanjosemike
It was written with his own technique in mind. A recording of him playing is on TH-cam. I would describe his playing as "efficient"-he got the job done, but there was not a lot of subtlety, his right hand was pretty crude, his vibrato was generic, and his intonation was good, not great. He takes the last movement way faster than everyone else-it matches his metronome indications-but it's kind of a mess. As for difficulty. some players find it very hard, other find it pretty easy, It's easier, for sure, than the Walton.
echo de menos imagenes del fabuloso spicatto de Tamestit en el 3º movimiento. El realizador pone el dialogo entre trompa y oboe como si fuésemos sordos...!
Does anybody know what viola he was using? His C string didn't seem extremely clear at times, usually a feature of the instrument, so it probably isn't a Strad. It looks a little older than modern. Does anybody know?

Hindemith is the bridge, between modern and ancient, expansive and simple, complex and sparse, dreams and the real.
Timothy Sweeney Ten thousand percent agree. This is my favorite composition ever. "Five Peices" is also a favorite of mine.
So ugly sounds
And let's not forget the wit that floods on this masterful work. It's quirky and serious at once.
It is like war but with a happy ending... strange but holly molly awesome

you must learn to love the challenge, so you can enjoy learning his pieces
@@GamingPhantomOnSteam Agreed. Unfortunately for me, most directors stray away from Hindemith, sadly.
Yes! That IS sad!

Perfect on all counts. Golden Age of the Viola.

Saugut ! Leute, echt saugut !
Beim Zuhören fühle ich mich wohl wie in der Badewanne -- oder geschaukelt wie ein Kindlein.
Ich liebe die Moderne.
Dieser Musiker ist eine Offenbarung!!! So einfühlsam, so intelligent!!!
Лучшее исполнение этого концерта! Никогда не задумывался делать глисы во второй части, но это убеждает!
Thank you for this committed performance! For me, it deeply tells of the modern angst we all experience. Brilliant.
OUTSTANDING!! So brilliantly executed, it hurts!
the 2nd movement melody is just so gorgeous, and what a beautiful setting to the harp accompaniment. a gem in the viola rep for sure

Maybe I'm hallucinating but this piece, as well as the Walton concerto, remind me of the Elgar violin concerto. Great performance.
I wish he would play the US west coast some time! He's brilliant, and the orchestra is so great

This is a truly wonderful performance of this superb music. Bravo to the soloist, conductor and orchestra.
how many thumbs up do this upload deserves??? outstanding! Bravo!
Hahaha olha onde te encontrei Mr. Dimas
Make sure you hear the recording of Hindemith himself playing this! It is on youtube.
Yeah, but the background noise is real.

I am working on this piece, it's a really complicated piece but his performance seems very easy!
That's the trick!! ;)

I agree with you. Performing this piece takes a mind body spirit approach. It's an extremely difficult piece. I can't believe he pulled it off. Magic!

Im going to assume that those 11 dislikes are for the video editor. if only so that I can continue to believe in the good within ALL people.
Love Hindemith, but damn, the sound and picture on this video was really out of sync!
OMG, I just noticed :/
F A N T A S T I C !!
video editor should be shot. great performance.
Eric D So they decided to do something a little different with the video editing. Hardly a crime which should merit someone being shot.
Ted Johnson yes, was just frustrated. :P
this is the best performance i've found of this piece, i just wanted to see the soloist more. viola angst. :)
good
They seem to have had problems syncing the audio to the visual.
wow wow wow!!!!

+Ben Eager According to his website, he plays a strad on loan, but this video is four years old now so it might not be the same instrument.
He's been playing the Mahler Stradivarius on loan since before 2010.
it's one of the ten or twelve extant Strads, the oldest, if I recall
Among the oldest violas, the Stradivarius' violas are the "worst"
Maggini's, Guarnieri's and Salò's violas are better
Strad is overrated
Hindemith played the viola himself
Ouch, i play this xD this is a little difficult

The Jaarvi's bought their way to careers. They paid radio stations to play their recordings. Totally unethical on both parts.
so did the beatles. thank you Mr Epstein
