Hollywood is about making cinematic experiences, not realistic ones. If a movie is not “realistic” it’s because they choose not to. The people who nitpick every single detail in a film seem to think filmmakers are dumb. They forget they have hundreds of artists, animators, engineers, writers, storytellers, researchers, etc. working to make a good movie, and they know the majority of people just want to have a good time, not watch a documentary.
Cool stuff. Ever read "Forever War"? Their space battles were light minutes or even light hours apart. The first ship to spot their enemy fires lasers, projectiles, missiles and such, where the computers believe the enemy ship will be 30 mins ago or a few hours. So they are essentially fighting each other in the past. The people in the ships strap into space suits and are emersed in a liquid vat that dampens their molecules from being blown apart due to the g-forces the ship will under go firing back and making themselves harder to hit. It is a battle between AI, math and physics. I found these battles interesting as hell. Nothing is 'current' its all predictive. If your ship finds an enemy ship in your system that's 30 light minutes away (the Sun is like 8-9 minutes away), and you start firing, they won't be hit for another 30 minutes to days later. So you will not fire directly at them, but where you think they will be 30 mins from now. Cause you spotted the ship 30 mins in your past. If they spotted you first by 30 minutes, your ship will be under laser fire before you even knew the enemy was there.
It’s the same in the Vatta’s war books. They fire lasers that only hit their targets hours later. No one knows they’re even under fire until they start taking hits.
