  • Croatian soprano Zinka Kunc Milanov (1906. - 1989.) was a student of Croatian soprano Milka Ternina (first Tosca in Covent Garden and Metropolitan Opera). Here she talks about her 30 years long MET career, her beginning of international career and role of Puccini's Tosca. Short excerpts cut out from documentary "I live for art: Tosca" (1983).

The original, one of a kind. I loved and honored her work. The great dramatic soprano. Singular, direct and honest. No one like her

Look for her 1957 recording (here on TH-cam) of Tosca with Jussi Bjorling and Leonard Warren.
    It's absolutely incredible.

I liked to know what you find of "incredible" in her 1957 RCA Tosca ? Because her voice is veiled and her upper register totally worn out

It's pretty interesting that she sang In questa reggia for her audition. Turandot wasn't just a one-off thing she encountered during her youth. I also can't imagine any opera company nowadays just putting on another opera due to the indisposition of another singer. Planning has its virtues, but so does flexibility.

When asked to tell the plot of Il Trovatore, she said " how can I ? I only sing one role". She was funny, but not always on purpose.

Milanov tells a little white lie at the end when she mentions many people telling her should have stayed longer. There was no way that was going to happen. Albanese and Milanov, both of whom sang at the final gala at the Old Met in April 1966, were at the end of their careers and Bing did not see either of them transitioning to Lincoln Center. Milanov intuited this and retired. Albanese tried to hold on but Bing offered her such meager fare for the 1966-67 season that she decided to quit as well. As early as 1960 Bing was telling Milanov's brother that it was time for her to stop.

@Noack Somewhere Marilyn Horne. For a full explanation, please refer to the Met Centennial Gala. Zinka's opinion of Jackie's singing is too difficult to put in words.

@omarsomehow69 Callas had a bigger voice than Tebaldi and Milanov, period. Callas was a dramatic soprano, Milanov and Tebaldi were spintos

@@judygarland7186Who cares? Bigger does'nt always mean better. Renata Tebaldi had a better, more lush voice than Callas.

@@RamonaVanDerMerwe-ws4yb then why isn't Tebaldi capable of singing 5% of Callas' whole repertoire if she had a better voice?

When Bing was mugged he held a press conference to say he wasnt harmed and only lost a $10 watch. Zinka was in a snit then finally told him " the manager of the Metropolitan does NOT wear a watch worth only ten dollars."! She had her standards and sense of decorum.
