      Yeah Cliff really put the ass into the band's sound on this album. The Cliff em All video release (mostly poor sound quality) when he's doing the background vocals on the Creeping Death chorus: Die!(by my hand)Die! Die!Die!
      They've had numerous replacements (love Justice, but the bass completely mirrors the rhythm guitar parts, maybe Newstead was just doing what he was told) but it doesn't live up to the original Major Rager. Heard Ride the Lightning actually before Kill em All, and I agree, it's more theirs, as Mustaine wrote a lot of Kill em All (hence the beef in the old days "Don't use my shit" and of course they did) Regardless, I was a big fan then and still am now, soundtrack to my arrested adolescence!

      Dave uses those little chromatic up and back down riffs all over the place if you listen for it. Sometimes it's like a 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 style riff and sometimes a 1-2-3-2 1-2-3-2. Ktulu uses them both.

    Lots of cool info. In my opinion Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, & Master of Puppets are all essential metal albums. Not one bad song in any of those 3 albums. I disagree that Kill Em All is anything less than a metal benchmark and critical debut setting a new precedent for metal going forward. Some of the tracks are on my list of top quintessential Metallica tracks. If I was making a mix tape of essential Metallica songs for a friend who never heard them Seek and Destroy, Four Horsemen, Whiplash, Pulling Teeth would be on it. As well as RTLs For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, Ktulu, Creeping Death and some others and on MOP Master, Sanitarium, Orion, Thing That Should Not Be. IMHO

    Excellent video, Brian! I can tell you put alot of work and effort into this one. The jump from KEA to RTL sonically and musically was a massive jump. I'm not sure if any band has had a change that drastic from debut to 2nd album. Although, KEA did have some moments of things to come. The mid break and solo from The Four Horsemen, and the clean break in Phantom Lord, showed that Metallica could slow down and write some catchy clean style riffs, right along with the heavy and fast. Metallica never fell into the trap of "Fast equals Good" like all their contemporaries, which gets stale after awhile. Metallica were never afraid to push the boundaries of what they were capable of, and that's a big part of why they are the biggest Metal Band ever today

    Surprised you didn't talk about Cliff's bass on For Whom The Bell Tolls. No mention of the tone or the bass tracks. Fun fact: the reason why the bass on the album mix sounds different than when its played live (even by Cliff) is because its (at least) double tracked with one of them involving tapped harmonics. Cliff might've doubled the normal lead bass line and made it three bass tracks, but I'm not sure. And there is the elusive fourth bass track which is Cliff playing along with the guitars.

    Dave mustains Influence over Metallica is heavily understated. His contributions to Ride The Lighting has weight. He quite literally changed the tragectory of the band.
    The 8 months he spent in metallica were the most pivotial in the bands career. Having a lead guitarist in the 80s was extremely important. Dave was a legend in the thrash scene. Highly respected. Everything he did for metallica is worth more than people understand.
    They found their sound and style with him as a leader. His solos, stage presence, writing contributions, vibe.
    One riff on ride lightening is worth more than many bands' entire careers. Take that into perspective.
    Arguing with people in the comments, it's clear that they dont know what it's like being in a band. Over generalizing Daves time in metallica without understanding the context.
    They just weren't going in the same direction before he joined. Lars was networking a lot but could barely play drums. James did not have the confidence and stage presence that dave did. And he wasn't that great of a guitarist. They didn'tt havea lott of material and no lead guitarist.
    Aquiring dave and cliff around the same time was key. No one has a problem praising cliffs contributions? On paper, it wasn't that much. But everyone knows there's more to it. Same with daves. Even tho on paper, daves contributions are significant.
    I made an edit to this because my original comment wasnt serious. I was trying to say that even the sections he contributed to ride the lighting still hold weight. Even if you want to frame it as "only 2 riffs"
    Ride the lightening was an evolution for the band. Kirk had to change his lead style. James found himself as a writer. Etc. But Daves influence was still there. Even on master of puppets.
    Dave came in with some of the most thrash material ever written. Metal milita and phantom lord are very much like MOP.
    I dont understand why people want to down play it. It is what is it. The guy was ahead of his time.

    Q - " Why [is] Ride the Lightning Metallica's Real Debut ?"
    A - Because Dave only wrote 67% of it -vs- him writing 100% of K!ll 'em All

      @@BrianWGuitar Interesting? he is lying, Mustaine wrote 4 songs on Kill'em All and they used some riffs on "Ride" and "Ktulu", Megadeth fanboys are really weird.

    • @Tempashot
      @Tempashot 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@cr1min4l It’s because Megadeth fan boys hate the fact Metallica is more successful. Think about it, if Metallica hadn’t been successful you wouldn’t get any Megadeth fans trying to claim Dave wrote everything. It would be quite the opposite. They’d say ‘Nah Dave had nothing to do with that shit’
      But because they are huge and successful it’s… ‘Yeah Dave wrote em all, he’s the reason Metallica are where they are’ etc etc

      @midnight347 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Tempashot this. It's super cringe. 67% my ass maybe 5% if that lol. He prob was only responsible for maybe 25% of kill em all and that's being generous. I love Dave and megadeth but his fanboys are delusional. Both bands are awesome idk why they have to hate on Metallica and hump megadeth lol. Why cant one just appreciate both? It's not that difficult

    Cool Video. I absolutely love Ride the Lightning but Kill em All is a Monster. A lot of these songs off it are staples at Every Show. Its the first metallica Tape I ever owned (One of my Brothers Friends Left it over our house this was 1990 i was 12) . I understand people when they Cowboys from Hell is Pantera's Real Debut as their drastic change put them into a whole New Category. Ride the Lightning However was major Progression in the Genre as a whole rather than a Drastic Change.
    Really cool video but I Respectfully disagree.

      They didn't treat him bad he was a violent out of control drunk who threatened to derail the band before they even got off the ground. All 3 other members unanimously wanted him out so that tells you everything. Dave has had 22 members besides himself in his band since 1985 and Metallica had only had 2 previous members that aren't in the band anymore since 83 one died and one was with them 15 years before leaving. This tells you everything as far as who the difficult one is. I love both bands but stop this nonsense that Dave was treated poorly by Metallica.
