Thank you! This is the most straight forward answer I have found that helped demistify this. Even the photoshop documentation didn’t explain the airbrush option on or off as well as this.
Colin, buddy I have been using this tool for a while, yes but the way you explained in this tutorial video was fantastic. I learned what are the differences between Opacity and Flow when I used the painting machine to paint the house. One button was the flow and another for the pressure and also how wide or narrow I wanted to paint, however, you give me on this video an even better way of using those settings. Thank you so much -JN
Using/trying flow for a few months. New the technical difference but this vid explains the why. Thanks 👍 I think flow also needs to be at a lot lower percentage relative to what I would normally use for opacity. This I didn’t understand in the beginning and I was getting terrible results.
Thanks for this informative video! I’ve used both Flow and Opacity , mostly in a trial and error until I created the desired effects. This will speed up my work flow.
I had been using them, but both! On portraits, I had been making another layer, then with a soft bush and opacity and flow low, sampling the colour from the original and painting on the new layer to smooth skin slightly. Your explanation of the differences is very good as I wasn't quite sure but this explains it, and I use a mouse, I did buy a tablet, but have hardly used it, this video makes me want to dig it out and try again Thanks!
There are both useful. Photoshop doesn’t provide a magical universal tool. We must lear to use them all appropriately based on the nature of the job. That’s were the magic is, learning to use it as a whole, understanding photoshop ecosystem is revealing! Great video!
Hello Colin I use the flow and strength of the brushes to retouch face in essence. In some cases I use to blur. Although there are more tools. Anyway the guide was interesting. Thank you very much
Really great explanation! I generally use flow, like you did on the portrait retouch, and then adjust the strength with opacity (because I always go overboard). I think that's probably the best combo!
Hello again. Another great tutorial on a very interesting subject. I now have a Wacom (same size and model as yours) and so this information was very useful. The difference between the 2 is really quite striking when using a pressure sensitive pen isn't it?! Thank you once again.
When blending or painting I generally use flow. I usually want to control how much I add. Do the percentages work the same if you go too far and want to remove some?
i found you through the suggested videos first your are videos are very nice and more informative..i just made a TH-cam channel so am definitely thanks for all your help.please keep it up!just subbed!!
Do you know how to get the same coverage evenly after picking up the pen? I have a hard time keeping pen down when painting and then I get uneven coverage. Thanks!
@@photoshopcafe Thank you for the reply! I could have sworn in a much earlier PS version there was no overlapping of stokes like now with the right use of flow or opacity. Thanks again. Could not find how you demonstrated this, but I think you are saying go 100% at the shade you want. I'll play. Thanks again
I have never used either but now I know about them I will try, but I only have a mouse. Colin, please, get rid of that dreadful, monotonous background "music".
This has been the most useful and well-explained explanation of the difference! Thanks, Colin!!

Thank you for the explanation, I have watched a few videos but this one was the most clear explanation by far.
I have never understood the difference between opacity and flow until now. Thank you Colin
I've used these features all the time and have to teach this workflow to our students. Your explanation helped to simplify the process.

VERY enlightening (pun intended)! I've always used opacity and not been happy because of the banding. NOW i know what I should do. Thanks!!
I always use flow when i am editing and i am still likely continue to use it because it helps changing the intensity of a color faster when editing
I've never used flow but now I know the difference between opacity and flow. Thanks Colin!
Another informative video. I mostly use flow for blending but now I understand why it works better. Thanks
I have been using opacity mainly because I didn't know how they really worked so thanks for the explanation!
excellant expiation I have been using Photoshop since the 1.3 release this has been an eye opener
This Video solve the Problem that i had with Flow and Opacity Thanks Colin Please Keep Up Your Great Tutorials

Thanks a lot Colin for the amazing tutorial! God bless you!
Thank you for this tutorial. I was almost always focusing on opacity and rarely working with flow.

Terrific breakdown of opacity vs. flow. Learned a lot. Thanks.😷😷😷

yes, choose a shade of gray rather than opacity. see my last livestream where i demonstrate this
