    In the example you gave of 25% opacity, you had to lift the brush first to start another build up of 25% to get the darker color by overlapping.. Now with flow you do not have to lift the brush.. So if flow is set to 25% in your 3rd example, moving the brush stroke 4 times over the color will get you to 100% of the color. This is very cool because if you set flow to say 1% then you can gradually build up to what ever % you want.. so 100 brush strokes will get you to 100% of the color-gradually. great for shading.. And if you enable the airbrush icon along with flow, you don't even have to move the brush at all, just touch it to the area you want color applied and flow will build up the color at the speed you set the flow % to.. To make flow not go past a specific value while shading, set opacity to the desired value.. Flow will give you control of your gradients.. 1% is best until you get a full grasp of how fast the build up happens for the specific brush you're using. Don't lift the brush just move it back and forth.. Use flow to physically do brush strokes.. Use opacity to only tell flow how dark he is allowed to go..

      +star child The Flow kindoff helps to mimic coloring pencils, I guess.

      Flow controls the intensity of color

      It's pretty straightforward. Flow controls how much "pigment" is layed per unit time

    Ever since discovering the difference between flow and opacity, I almost always keep my opacity at 100%, and tweak the flow the most. Sometimes as long as 2-3% if I'm wanting to do really gradual building up of tones/colors, but usually 5-10% works very well.

    2:35. Under the hood is simple and unambiguous answer: flow is a opacity for EACH brush's circle(or another shape) of which it consists. If you go to Brush settings/Brush tip shape and increase spacing a bit you will see it.

    what spacing are you using? when my flow is low (like when I'm drawing with light pen pressure), it shows up as a bunch of overlapping circles. But if I turn the hardness to try to smooth it, the edges look too soft. How are you achieving those hard edges without ending up with those overlapping circles?

    I would love to see the same topic explained with pen pressure control turned off. Because I think you're making the flow vary in all of the examples. If you turn the pen pressure control for flow off, THEN you'll get actual 25% and 100%. Thanks ;)

      That's what I'm wondering, different brush types combined with pressure sensitivity, makes this flow so unnecessary

    important to notice brush>transfer is set to pen pressure for both opacity and flow for this, otherwise in 1st example when both were 100% it'd have been solid black line

    4:20 the author occassionally lowers his flow, but almost always keep opacity=100%

    If you have 100% Opacity and 100% Flow... then how do you go from light to dark on a single stroke? am I missing something?
    does your tablet have opacity pressure turned on? Because I'm not getting the same results as this video.

    • @yoctlow
      @yoctlow 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He's using a pen (not a mouse) with "Transfer" turned on in Brush Settings (I presume), but it is true that I didn't hear him say that. It's also (at least in PS 2024) the "pressure-for-opacity" button in what I think is called the "Application Bar" (along the top of the Workspace).

    • @azqzel8765

      this is really late, but you make another layer and make the opacity of it 25%, but keep the brush's opacity to 100%

    Hi, ctrl+paint I'm getting back into painting/ digital painting and I'm kinda stuck with some opacity stuff. When the opacity is put down to 30% it has a nice effect and it's what I'm looking for however what I don't like is when the brush strokes overlap and cause a different shade/ opacity to come through is there any way to stop this from happening apart from avoiding areas and doing it with 1 brush stroke. Any help would be appreciated :).

    • @jarecrow7688
      @jarecrow7688 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You've probably found the answer by now, but if not, set your opacity to the maximum you want and your flow to a lower percentage. You can then build up your painting with flow up to what the opacity is set at (without the overlap look of lifting the brush and doing another pass as in the 25% opacity and 100% flow example in the video.

    Oppacity affects the whole brush area while Flow affet the radius from the middle out.
