    The image is iconic: Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer toeing the ball over the line at Camp Nou to secure Manchester United the treble in 1999. But how did they get there?
    This is a story of how manager Sir Alex Ferguson learnt from previous failings, came back stronger, adapted to the continental style of play and inspired his side to never give up.

    The way Manchester United won the treble is really unbelievable. They defeated Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle to win the FA cup in an emphatic fasion and Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Inter, Juventus despite being in the group of death. They overcame Fatigue, suspension, injuries and had many players who came from youth squad. It had everything from added time goals, squad rotation, team play to key substitutions and unique tactics. They were so good but still aren't talked about when there is a debate for best squad ever to play football.

    It highlights what kept SAF at the top, and more importantly winning, year after year after year. Adaptability.
    He constantly learned and constantly adapted so matter what came along it couldn’t keep him down for long. Managers are often too attached to philosophies or systems. The only thing SAF was attached to was winning, by whatever means necessary.

    What I love about United's treble is not only did they win, but it felt poetic as to who they beat in England to do the double. The FA Cup win over Liverpool vanquished their oldest rivals. The league vanquished their new upstarts. Beating Newcastle felt like the punctuation on a paragraph of battles. Then to win the Champions League on what would've been Matt Busby's 90th birthday was a script out of Hollywood.

    As someone who wasn’t alive for 5 more years (2003), it’s so weird and fascinating to hear people not think squad rotation was important. I knew that possession and similar now fundamentals of football hadn’t made it England, but squad rotation not being a thing escaped me.

    • @mindsai7
      @mindsai7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rotation wasn't as necessary. Players didn't play as many games as they do now and the game was somewhat slower, more focused on skill and creativity. Season ending injuries were rare and almost always came from bad fouls rather than just plain fatigue from too many games played at ultra high intensity.

      it is quite crazy how football in England really started evolving, and how raw it still was during the 90s, you'd have teams like Middlesborough sign some amazing players, do poorly in the league but go all in on the cups & the idea of peak fitness wasn't much of a thing - you'd have players play drunk etc. Also rec football faithful; 90s hall of fame series for some good look back at that era.

      I agree Fergie could have won the Champions League more. United should have atleast got to the 1997, 2002 and 2003 finals in my opinion. Especially '03 when it was held at Old Trafford. But United met holders Real Madrid and were beaten in the quater finals 6-5 on aggregate.
      Whereas '97 and '02 United were knocked out in two semi finals to Dortmund and Levekusen pretty much on a whimper.
      It is debatable whether the 2009 side were capable of beating Barcelona but the 2011 United team had no chance. That Guardiola-Barcelona were magnificent and at the peak of their powers.
