  • We're in Quartzite. Got a GoSun Grill. So far so good!!
    No, I have not sold out to the dark side & have no affiliation with the GoSun company in any way, this is not a paid video/add nor anything like that.

    As a proud owner of one of these go sun (and soon to be owner of a go sun fusion when they come out next year), I have just two suggestions for everyone.
    1.) Do. Not. Take. This. Thing. Lightly. Forget the fuel source. It is an oven. The chicken I put in that usually cooks for 40 minutes in the oven, I said to myself "Hey, it's a solar oven, give it more time".
    30 minutes went by and the chicken was at 160. And before you ask, no, we're in upstate New York. This was early summer, but still, we're not in a place where it's known for sun. That leads to suggestion two.
    2.) Plan to spend every new dish at the side of the go sun grill and invest in an electric thermostat with Prongs/leads connected by a wire. A good one will have a Temperature alarm that buzzes when you hit a certain heat. Consider that alarm your start time and cook from there. Use the same thermometer to check the temperature of the food at time of your choosing. I like to wait for the normal cooking time, but some people want to always prod the meat... Even though that's bad and you're letting all the juices escape.
    I know what people are saying about pricing. Believe me, I know. But now, it's a luxury. Another August 2003 black out happens, and it's the most basic necessity you have.
    And bonus, if it happens early enough, you can prepare something big and let it sit in it's own heat until night time. It might only be warm when you eat it, but warm food when you have no electricity is like Five Star Dining.

      Thank you for all the info and useful tips. It's always good to hear from someone that has actually used it. The cost makes it so you don't want to make a mistake and ruin it.

    Thanks Matt, we've used a traditional SunOven for many years and it is good to see alternative designs that are very successful. It is always good to stretch the propane as far as possible.

      I tried making two, one out of a pizza box & the other a larger box. They both worked to an extent but I had a hard time getting them hot enough. No a problem getting the GoSun hot and keeping it there for a long time. It's making me want a pork tenderloin, ha!

    Nice to see someone using the GoSun Grill. A lot of videos are about the company. For the price of them I don’t think I would shim the unit up to get the optimal sun. I know it weighs in at 20 lbs, but a good gust of wind might send it to the ground. l’ve been looking at these for awhile and yes they are very expensive. I was thinking of getting a Sport to try and then I found the GoSun Go on Kickstarter. If I like the small Go model I think I will get the grill someday. Would enjoy seeing what else you can cook in these and how it turns out.

      alf3553 Hi, No doubt tilting it is a risk. So far we have made roast, meatloaf, hamburger helper. Made chicken fajitas today's. We've also fried bacon & sausage, and baked blueberry & chocolate muffins. It works very well & we have been using it daily, but as with any new way of doing something, it does come with a small learning curve. Likewise, due to its price, it does require a certain level of commitment to solar cooking :) Honesty I'm still not over the price, it's not cheap, but it works at a very high level. Thanks for watching!

      Out here at Roadrunner we've met a younger couple with 3 kids just getting started full timing in a 5th wheel and have had a great time getting to know them. Really nice people who are going to be camp hosts this summer at a campground that's at 8000 feet up!

We'll make an update video soon and explain what happened. Didn't go to the RTR, I think it ended a day or two before we arrived. Our meetup was at the Quartzite Town Park, video soon.

    I bought a Rand Solar tube some years ago because I couldn't afford the grill. I bought the little rocket cooker with the evacuated tube the second time I boiled water I lifted it by the bail, and it fell apart and shattered the tube when it hit the ground, when the go sun go came out I got one and I have broke the tube twice and got replacements. They started to sell the fusion heated tray separately and I got that for my rand tube but have never used it. the heated tray uses the same cord as the refrigerator.

    Matt, you said y'all cooked cornbread and Hamburger Helper in the sun stove...are you saying you actually 'fried' hamburger meat in that thing? As a side question, how long did it take to heat up to the #3 position in order to start cooking ANY type of food?

    • @NomadicNative
      @NomadicNative  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I'm not sure if it would be called fried or baked hamburger, but it came out looking the same as it does fried in the pan. The GoSun will even make crispy bacon. The trick to getting "fried" meat is to slightly open the tray, just a little, to let moisture escape. When we made the cornbread & helper & set the grill up to let it preheat to 3, by the time I had everything in the pans it was over 3 & I had to cool it off before I could put the trays in. So it does not take very long to heat up, but it also depends on if you have full sun or not. The grill will heat up and cook even on cloudy days but it takes longer to do it.

      We didn't want to spend the entire winter in one spot like we did last year, and we needed to get back West to visit Maria's Mom, hope to surprise her on the 7th.

    You better not ask them for any help. I emailed 4 times due to a broken tube (GoSun 150) that was broke in shipment. Never once did they respond. Had to get PayPal to help get me my refund. POOR service department! But looks like a quality product. Too bad they don't know how to treat their customers.

  • @kilawattkidd
    @kilawattkidd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love this video. You explain all the important points quickly and concisely. One question: to prevent shattering the tube, could you put the food in at 2.5 as a precaution? Would that work?

    • @NomadicNative
      @NomadicNative  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joshua Rialto yes, that will work fine. GoSun recommends putting it in at 3, I’ve actually done it pushing 4 & it was okay but the food was at room temp. It takes a bit of practice but you can get this oven to a temp & hold it there for an extended period of time. Works great!

    Hey BUDDy what time is dinner👀Hey Matt can you regulate the power at any temp or is it Hot or just Hotter no inbetween

    • @NomadicNative
      @NomadicNative  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can maintain a temp with this grill. This thing holds heat like crazy, so once I get it to temp I just offset it from the sun to maintain it or even close it up until the temp starts to drop. The book that comes with it equates the numbers on the dial to cooking temps.

    If you are driving a vehicle that uses gas and propane then what's the point in using something that takes you hours to cook anything Lmao

    • @NomadicNative
      @NomadicNative  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sean Prior the point is not using propane or electric to cook which uses resources and heats the RV up which then forces us to run the generator for AC using up even more resources. Thanks for watching!!
