      Yes, after five years of comments letting us know that you know that they’re not real, we’ve decided to publicly admit it: we used fucking air guns and then returned them to Wal-Mart after the shoot cause we’re bloody frugal. Thanks for watching lmao

    The one thing that was not right were the rifles, they were pellet rifles!

      Spotted the springer air rifle straight away but, think about it, a sniper is still a shooter and a gun is a gun. Its just that that one won't do a massive amount of damage over any great distance but can still be lethal at short distances and often has been. The air rifles look like Hatsan Snipers. Ironic eh! However, the film is about acting and the plot not technicalities....its a bloody film.

    This was honestly a phenomenal short film. Granted passing felt a tad off and spoken lines felt rough, the unlikely protagonists of the story really brought it all together. An entire story told through blood and tears of their actions rather than words. The effects seemed genuine and the certain key shots were mind blowing. I'm not sure why, but the fly in the pool of blood stroke me as the most stunning visual. I'm hoping to achieve such level of quality in my early goings (whenever that comes) so I have to ask about the camera used for this project. All in all terrific short film, terrific job!

      Time2Spare Thank you for all of the feedback and for taking the time to write a comment. Audio was a huge problem on set. Glad you noticed the fly. The actor who plays the officer actually noticed it whilst lying on the pavement. I'm honored the film had such an impact.
      The Sniper was shot using a Nikon D5100, a kit lens (18-54mm) and a 50mm prime lens! Be sure to check out our new web series, Art Less!

      This is awesome to watch. I live in Norway and would love to move to America to make movies, but don't know how to start. Especially write. I already have some ideas. Both original and not-original. But i have to say, if you gave us some more character building and really flulshed out what started this civil war, you could make a whole movie out of this, and make it a really good character built drama. Where a family gets torn apart by civil war and how familiy members are forced to attack each other.

      +Filip Orvik The best way to start is, in my experience, to just start. I'd love to help you out with an ideas you may have. The idea of making this short a full length project is a good one, but I think The Sniper is a closed deal. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Be sure to check out the series I directed, Art Less.

    Just so I have this straight. An NCO and a lieutenant meet in a place where there is at least one known sniper. They arrive in full military garb driving a civilian vehicle. The one sniper is firing from an elevated position with no cover and the other sniper leaves his elevated position just to go another in order to retrieve a satchel? After taking a hit already? Wow.

      Christ boys I made this short film as a sophomore in high school. I wasn’t a military tactician at the time and the short film follows the short story beat beat. While I certainly can’t defend the majority of the blatant errors in the film, I will say that the sniper overheard the conversation regarding the medical supplies. Once he was shot in the upper arm/shoulder he chooses to make the run to attempt to collect the satchel as it is most likely his only shot at survival. Thanks for the comment bro

    • @GabrielFowler
      @GabrielFowler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jan Vander Elst considering the police were called on us over a dozen times while filming this short because they saw people on rooftops with guns (we had all of the proper permits and had notified local departments) I’d say it was a good thing it was only an air rifle

    I am so proud that you as a 15 year old created this. You have so much potential ahead of you. This film was well-done. I know you did not have a stabilizer because some of the shaky shots that there were but you really know how to use the resources that you have and use and use them to your best of your abilities. Also, becareful when crossing the 180 degree axis (look up the 180 degree rule) because sometimes it can confuse the audience like in this part 1:27. Anyways, great job dude! Keep at it because you are only going to get better and better, can't wait to see more of your films.

    • @GabrielFowler
      @GabrielFowler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and giving your critiques of the film. I'm sixteen now, but was in fact fifteen when I made it. The majority of the shaky shots (on top of the roof) were handheld due to being hard to have lots of equipment and people up there, while keeping the people and equipment safe.
      I've learned all about the 180 degree rule since I released The Sniper and have been more careful with this in my latest project.
      Again, thanks for the positive feedback and advice! Cheers(:

    Great location and wardrobe. I also really dug the bullet wound effect, very creative. Long shot coming out of the barn worked well too. Nicely done man.
    For critique (only because you asked me to give it) - on the technical side, the roughest thing was the audio. Had some peaking/muffled moments there. Last thing I'd say is that the pacing felt slow, I'd try to trim it down closer to 5 minutes. Cut the fat and anything unneeded to really drive the experience and connection for the viewer.
    Congrats on the short. Great job to the cast and crew.

    • @GabrielFowler
      @GabrielFowler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      First off, thank you for taking the time to view the film, as well as give your feedback. I agree that the audio is the biggest technical flaw of the film. It was incredibly windy while filming which caused a lot of problems on set. In post production, I put a highpass filter on the audio, which though it got rid of the wind to some degree, it also made the audio very muffled.
      The short could also be cut down for sure and it definitely drags in the second half. Live and learn, I guess.
      Thanks again for watching the film! Glad you enjoyed it!

    Wow, really amazing film. Pacing was spot-on throughout and action scenes felt as thrilling as any high-end Hollywood action movie. Great characters and plot. Congrats on the film festival, you definitely deserved it. Keep up the good work!

      Acquainted Soldier Thanks for the feedback. The short story that it was loosely based on was all from the point of view of the main Sniper, so no dialogue. Hence, I was forced in a way to tell the story all through visuals, but I think the show not tell style worked for this short, as did you apparently. If you want to check out more you can watch the five episode series I directed, Art Less on this channel, or on Amazon Video on October 19th!

    Hey really good stuff here, you're getting a lot of things right. From a story perspective, it's hard to follow. I got the exposition but knowing why the girl was important to the man early on would have helped an emotional connection, and having her on the screen more would help too. Visually you always want to tell the most with the least. For example, the long running shot is very impressive, but what is it doing for the story? And lastly, always keep composition in mind. There were times the subject would leave the frame or be at a far corner. Using a longer focal length and finding angles that don't put the actor right onto a flat wall will add a lot of visual quality. And always be sure you are following the inverse shutter rule to make sure any motion the camera captures is smooth and consistent. Again, really impressive short film, keep at it!

      @GabrielFowler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for all of the feedback. There are certainly a lot of visual and story errors and missteps that I would change should I have the chance to redo the film. But, since I can't, I will do my best to improve in the future!

    That was fabulous. I love the color grading as well as the angles and movement of the camera. The only two things that kinda threw me off were the spoken dialog lines and the use of pellet guns. Thanks for watching and taking the time to give your feedback! I'm really glad to see that you enjoyed the short film. Due to me being fifteen at the time of The Sniper being made and this entire project being payed for out of pocket, I didn't have the resources to have blank guns or model guns in the film Audio was also a huge problem on set, especially during the dialogue scene because the wing was insane the day we filmed it.

    Very impressed! The story was great, same with the music, angles and FX! Constructively, I must say: A few of the shots were a bit shaky, and the camera operator's shadow can be seen in a few shots. Still a great short film and I'm glad you made it! Maybe we can work on something together in the future ;) Keep up the great work! -S.B.

    Hey man; just saw your tweet. Yeah; great job! Doubly impressive that you made this at 15! I don't think I even knew how to turn a camera on at that age, haha :)
    The only constructive criticism I have is the shaky shots. But I'm thinking this is probably because you lacked the necessary equipment. A decent stabilizer can be pretty pricey.

    • @GabrielFowler
      @GabrielFowler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +The Unusual Suspect Thanks man! The reason for the shakiness is, you guessed it, the lack of a budget. More than half of my gear for that shoot was DIY. Thanks again for the feedback.

    The air rifles worked nice as props. I couldn’t quite tell though, were they using the same rifle or were they separate guns?

    Truly Amazing. You have really beautiful cinematography and I don't know if you graded this or not but it looked stunning. One of the things I really look out for in a film is editing because I feel that people don't pay attention to how much of the film is created in the editing room and I thought almost every single shot was edited very well especially how each shot had a smooth transition and did not distract the audience. You are truly a great filmmaker. Of course, you already know that there are audio issues so I'm not going to go into detail on that. I would say if you have the adobe creative cloud take the time to learn Adobe Audition which is a sound editing program. There are really great things you can do in there to improve the quality of your sound. It's amazing that you are producing a film like this at the age of 15 or 16 I believe and I hope to be as good as you by the time it at your age. I do have a couple of questions. First of all, do you live in L.A and if so are you in a high school program that you really enjoy? I'm looking into high schools and I am trying to find a good program. What camera and lens are you using I am looking to upgrade and thought since you are such a great cinematographer you might have a suggestion?Lastly what's your strategy for location scouting? I'd appreciate if you could go over the other two films on my page and give me some feedback on those if you have time. :) Great job you are an amazing filmmaker!!

      Thanks for the kind words man! The film was in fact graded. I live in New England and am currently homeschooled.
      As for the camera/lens, for this film I used a Nikon D5100 with a Nikon 18-54mm zoom and Nikon 55mm prime lens. I have upgraded to a Panasonic LUMIX G7, which is an amazing camera for the price. For location scouting, I thought of my idol location and looked for what most closely matched my ideas and asked for permission.
      I'll be sure to check out your work, and get back to you soon(:

    For your first work it is very advanced, better than most beginner shorts I've seen, but there are also quite a lot of things to improve. I'm sure you already know about the audio, length and shakiness issues. To improve your short, never stay with one scene for too long, a lot of scenes like in the beginning and when he goes inside treating his wounds are too long, same goes for shots, some where way too long or could have been improved with a short cut to another angle.
    The one-er where he runs outside is good but since it is only one shot the entire time it feels long and tedious, try to put in a bit of change like cutting to front or side view.
    Cinematography was alright but needs improvement, some shots didn't look that good. A good way to check is when you pause the film, no matter where, it should look as if it could be a photograph.
    -Press stop.
    -Does it look like it could be a wallpaper?
    -No? Consider reshooting that shot or try a different angle.
    -Yes? You got the perfect shot.
    If you have a tripod you can try to use it as a stabilizer by holding it at the end of the legs (only do this if your tripod is strong enough, or it might bend), you can also mount the tripod on your shoulder, just avoid holding the camera directly as much as possible.
    In terms of sound there isn't much you can do. You already did the best choice by trying to denoise it.The leveling could use some retouching as some sounds are quite loud. Consider investing in a boom mic or small wireless mics like they have on tv shows.
    Acting of the snipers was very good, casting and location were ideal as well. Story may be a bit confusing but can be improved by shortening. The feel of the short towards the end was conveyed very good.
    Sorry if this post feels like only negative criticism, while there is a lot to improve this short is definitely very good and for your first time it is at a high standard.

      @GabrielFowler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I saw your comment on Film Riot's channel and I gotta say, this is really good! I'm 20 and I've just started to take an interest in short films, so you're way ahead of the curve. Every video you release, take criticism from every source and use it to better your movies. The shots looked great here, I really enjoyed it. The major thing that takes away from the immersion here, is that I feel you shot in 30fps. Try filming in 24fps, it comes across so much more cinematic! And a few of the shots were a bit overexposed, but that's really not that big of a deal, easy fix. What kind of camera do you use? You can make homemade stabilizers that work great!

      @GabrielFowler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your positive response. Reactions to my works like these make it all worth it(: Thank you also for the critiques and feedback. I actually used a DIY shoulder rig that was based on one of Film Riot's designs. I used a Nikon D5100 with mostly a 18-54mm and 50mm prime lens. I've now upgraded to a Panasonic LUMIX G7.
      The long shot out of the barn was by far one of the hardest parts of the shoot. We filmed over twenty takes before we got it right. The largest issue was the stairwell was very short and sloped down. Our cinematographer kept hitting the back of the rig against the low ceiling as he came down. We even tried having our assistant director, who was almost a foot shorter than both my cinematographer and I, do the shot. In the end we went with the first take which was actually just a test run (done by me).
      Once again thanks for the critiques! If you'd like you can check out the trailers for my next project (a six episode television series that will be available on Amazon Video) on my channel!

    • @onepeice01
      @onepeice01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Film Wire it was a nice short film but I felt that there were too many unnecessary cuts to the face and to other places like when the one sniper was opening the envelope. Also when you are doing a cut off scene like the girl getting shot make sure it is more abrupt because it seemed more of her waiting to be shot for a split second before it actually happened. It was hard to tell the snipers apart at the beginning, and on top of that if you are doing a short film that doesn't have to much talking make sure the audience can understand what is going on without having to cut to every part of the same scene or frame(not a terminology wiz) it was also missing a direction like a place the film has to climax. I'm not trying to bash I'm just giving my opinion on what could be better. Sorry this is so long.

    Cool concept! It reminded me of the film "Enemy at the Gates" I like the Color Grading, to me I feel as if it's mysterious, uncertain. But the things I don't like are the Steady Cam shots, I know a lot of people like one shots, (even myself, Revenant, Birdman etc.) but it just extends the story to far. I also dislike the camera, it maybe due to your budget constraints because in dark scenes the lack of a good camera shows, or you didn't light the place properly. Lastly, I dislike the sound, looking at the comments you are aware of this but you should consider Sound Designing the film. It wouldn't be hard to find sounds for foot prints, or breathing etc.
    All in all cool short film, it's awesome to see people getting interested in film, my brother himself goes to a Film School and he and his friends make awesome projects, but I like you're attitude. You understand you're still learning/growing and you want honest feedback great job Gabriel!

      First off, thank you for taking the time out of your life to watch and give such fantastic critiques and feedback for The Sniper. The poor camera quality was due to the fact that we were using a Nikon D5100 (consumer level camera) and shot the film using only natural lighting, as the location had no electricity in the barn. I (Gabriel Fowler) was the sole producer of the film and was also the uncredited co-DP with Alex Desjardin. Alex had been working on the project with me since right after the first draft, so we were in many ways in sync when it came to the story, emotion, etc. He was focused more on the cinematography in terms of the story, characters, etc. while I was focused more on the actual camera movement.

    Heres my feedback - I really like it overall. Setting and so on is good. Colors are good. You certainly have talent. Heres some things that you could maybe look over:
    You begin showing the first sniper in close up in the tense moment, which is good, but then you go for mid shots of him, which i think is not ideal. you have a pretty decent actor on your hands with good face expressions, so you could stick to close ups to show his tension and to emphasize that he is hidden in the barn for the rest of the film.
    Love the camera positioning in the car. maybe steadycam to reduce the jogging?
    The girl and the military guy talking could use better sound. The dialogue cut at 1:11 is not ideal because your camera switches to the other side and the viewer has a hard time following the girls attention. Same goes with the following 'now' shot from the military.
    I love the special effects and the shooting. looks pretty good and not too graphic. chapeau!
    I think overall the action scene is a little confusing because the second sniper was never introduced and the viewer does not know that he is even there apart from the intro. At 1:20 you see the first sniper readying his rifle and right after that you see the second sniper aiming, which causes some irritation because i kinda was expecting the first ones action, since i witnessed him getting ready.
    The scene where you follow the sniper thorugh the barn is very good! i love the music and the hand camera. nice work! Also I like how you manage to transport the "cold war" tension through the rest of the film.
    Thats basically it. Hope this helps a bit.

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Looking back I agree that I could have held on shots for far longer. At the time I was attempting to build tension with the quick cuts, when in fact, a lack of cutting may have worked better. The lack of stabilization in the car, but also the entire short film, was due to a lack of equipment. I also recognize and admit that the audio and sound design is one of the weakest aspects of the short film. Thank you again for all of your fantastic feedback! That was great! I really liked it, it works very well overall. I would like to add a couple of comments, but please don't understand them as destructive criticism, it's just a couple of ideas I think may help improve future shorts.
    - The first few shots of the sniper looked awesome (great handheld), but I thought they should be longer. There were too many cuts in my opinion.
    - The music in minute 2:00 feels slightly out of place because of the percussion. The sort of music you use in 4:20 could be a better fit.
    - I would avoid having shots with different framerates, if I'm not wrong there are a couple of them shot in 60 fps that don't feel right because of the rest.
    - Have you considered using a narrower aspect ratio? 16:9 gives it a documentary vibe to the video, maybe it would look more filmic in 1.85:1.
    Once again, I think this is a phenomenal short film, just some ideas for you to consider in the future. I hope to see more of your work!

      Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment with such well thought out feedback and constructive criticism. The editing is something I would slow down if I were to do it now. I was attempting to build the tension with fast cuts, without realizing that longer unbroken takes build the suspense more often than not. The film was actually filmed all at 24fps and 30fps, but you are right that the frame rate should have stayed the same throughout. Please consider rating/reviewing The Sniper on IMDb and/or Amazon Video, as well as checking out my sophomore effort: Art Less, available on TH-cam and Amazon Video!

  • @Finn959

    Funny to see you comment on the Kuleshov video because I thought the editing here was really rough at times. There were certainly some things that could have been cut in another way or left out completely. It seemed too naturalistic at times. Did you originally shoot at 30(+)frames?
    Although it worked for this one I gotta say don't get too greedy and self indulgent with your long takes, unless you want to steal Oscars like those Mexicans. And lens flary stuff... Easy does it.
    The quote at the end may seem deep to you now, but I'm pretty sure you'll laugh at yourself in a few years for thinking it added anything worthwhile to the movie.
    That said, I was intrigued enough to watch the whole thing so... Nice!

      Gouneo Kipgen , sourcing a real rifle and blanks must have been to difficult. I was the first thing i noticed. And the first snipers tech holding the rifle. The shot was taken without him holding the stock into his arm. A real high caliber gun would have broken has collar bone. And normally the second sniper should have killed the first one that stupidly walked out in the open. But hey the point of this was the film making . And that was well done. Hats off for the hard work you have put in.

    A bit of criticism for ya, work on your sound design, lighting and framing. Never underestimate sound because that could easily drive people away quicker than anything else and if a sound doesn't sound great or something don't just cut it out, record new sound effects for it using other objects in a controlled environment. With lighting and framing I can tell you used natural light for this but it seemed like you had auto brightness on or something because the shot kept getting different levels of exposure so be careful about that. For the most part I liked how this film was framed but there was one shot in particular where the shadow of the cameraman could be seen and that type of thing can be fixed in a quick reshoot at a different angle. Overall decent little film and I can tell you show promise. This is your first work I've seen and will now check out your series. Good luck in your endeavors man!

    • @GabrielFowler

      Sound was in many ways ignored while filming and looking back that was in my opinion my biggest mistake. The film was lit using all natural light due to their being no electricity in the building. Thanks for all of the feedback and criticisms! Would love to hear your feedback on Art Less!

    Just needs better exposure compensation, post color processing, image stabilization, and better audio, but I see the potential. Try out different angles during scenes where someone is walking instead of one long follow. Last bit of critique of to make sure the actors deliver their lines authentically, and don't let them be scared of ad-libbing in order to make dialogue more believable.

      Unknown so did I all of us haha! We figured there was a large market for kids who’d rather watch a video than do their homework and I think we might have been right.

    Funny how all these expended cartridge casing are falling into a neat pile when he's on a roof! If your going to have people think he's using a semi-automatic 7.62mm rifle then give him one not a BB gun.

    Hey, just wanted to give you a tip. When you render your project make sure to set the frame rate to 24 or 30. If someone wants to watch it in 720p or 1080p the 60 frame rate doesn't have a cinematic feel to it.

    • @GabrielFowler
      @GabrielFowler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the feedback. The film was shot and edited in 30fps, so not sure why it is playing that way.

    • @byInfect

      Possibly, honestly can't remember. I will be uploading a 30fps and color corrected version of The Sniper to Vimeo soon.

    Well, considering those were break action pellet guns, you made them look pretty real. But, just so you're better informed about war because you've obviously had no experience with it, it does have winners. Hence us not all speaking German. The sheep forget their history so fast.

    My Critiques:
    - I think that if you would've chosen different music, it would elevate the film to much greater levels.
    - I don't know what it is about some of the camera angles, some felt too generic, others felt too static, and some outright cut out faces from the shot
    - I think a better actor choice for the woman who was killed and the sergeant would have added to the realism of the scene
    I am not saying this to be mean, your film was very well done with only these flaws, but when making future films, using my critiques, will in my opinion elevate them. Great work!

    Where i can found more sniper video or short film?

  • @rafeguitarr
    @rafeguitarr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Scenes can be stationary and long, you dont need to cut and have like 5 different shots in a span of 6 seconds

    • @GabrielFowler
      @GabrielFowler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the constructive criticism. Looking back I agree that I could have held on shots for far longer. At the time I was attempting to build tension with the quick cuts, when in fact a lack of cutting may have worked better (:

    I don't really understand why he killed himself at the end?? He has the wife and girl to live for and, as far as I can see, no personal or emotional attachment to either the victims or the other sniper. I mean, I get war is hell but that ending just felt like a dark twist for sake of a twist. Also, the movie needs some room to breathe. I felt like this movie was supposed to be contemplative but the songs and quick transitions between shots made that hard to do. It's a good concept tho, and the location was beautiful

    • @GabrielFowler
      @GabrielFowler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The idea was to show have the main sniper find his last shred of morality when he found the girl's photos with her family. He then struggles with what he should do, eventually deciding to pull the trigger. He then regrets said discussion. There was a cut scene that further explored this idea with the letter, however, I originally cut it as I feared that people would lose interest. In reflection, I should have kept said scene. Thanks for watching! Please consider rating/reviewing The Sniper on IMDb and/or Amazon Video, as well as checking out my sophomore effort: Art Less, available on TH-cam and Amazon Video!

      Thanks for watching and giving your feedback! As I say a lot when responding to comments, if I could go back I would've changed things, including having brought down the sound. As for the shakiness, in some ways I think I improved on this on my second project, Art Less, which available now on Amazon Video and for a limited time here on TH-cam! I'd love to hear your feedback - G

      Sniper taking cover over the top of a barn roof. Conspicuous much? This vid was so full of tactical mistakes, and then to even have the audacity to make a statement about war? When were any of them even close to a war?
