0:00 Intro
0:37 1 Sitting in your kayak, fold into the first position and flip over the side that is away from your blade. Open up your body and watch your blade move flat on the surface of the ground. Move it until your paddle reaches a perpendicular position to your kayak and the blade is above your head while still laying on the ground. Practice it a few times, eventually rolling up.
1:10 2 Start the previous exercise but have another kayak parallel to yours. As you move into the second position, your blade should get on the top of that kayak. Next, focus on the third part of the roll, where you flick the boat back up with your knees.
1:32 3 Practice your hip flick and knee transition by doing a t-rescue. Cover yourself with the boat, flip it up with your hips while your body stays under water. You can use a stable bank, your friend’s hands or a boat as support to roll up. Remember the three steps for this exercise - your body above the water, your cheek on the water surface and head under the water.
2:24 4 Repeat previous exercise but with your blade. Focus on having the paddle perpendicular to your support point. If taught from the water - a friend should stabilize your shaft so you can focus only on your knee movement.
3:37 5 Get your friend in the water holding you and the blade in a high-brace/t-rescue position. Focus on flicking the knees to roll the boat. This will help you to feel where your body should be when you reach to the surface and get into the second position.
3:54 6 Once comfortable with support, try getting up from your friend’s spraydeck, bow, and finally from their hands. Try to use the support only to start the move and then do the rest of the
movement with your hips and knees.
4:42 7 Ask your friend to hold your boat on the edge perpendicular to the water in the longitudinal axis. Set up in position one folding over with your paddle parallel to the kayak. Move your paddle above your head while on the surface to reach position two. Position three is a dynamic movement where the person holding you lets go of your boat and you get up by bracing on the blade.
5:18 8 Sitting in the basic position with your paddle vertical and
rotated inside 90 degrees along your body, flip your boat over to the side holding the position. Keeping your elbows tucked in. Once your blade touches the water, loosen up your position and let your body fall straight under your boat. Keep the blade at the surface, then pull on it strongly. Use it to flick your knees and bring the boat up. Skip this exercise if you have problems with your shoulders.
5:47 9 Starting in the folded position with your paddle on the side of the boat, flip down to the opposite side and start the movement of eskimo roll while falling down. At first, your paddle should be hitting the water before your body and you should get up. Once you are comfortable with it, delay initiation of the sweep to eventually start it when you hit the water.
6:27 10 Start upside down and set up for a roll. ask your friend to help you lead your blade by keeping it angled at the surface. They should let go of the blade once you get to the perpendicular point so you can roll up.
6:53 11 After you get comfortable with the move, try leading moving your blade on your own.
7:12 12 Practice in the eddy.
7:29 13 Practice in the flow rolling down on the upstream and the downstream sides.
7:54 14 While in a sidesurf, tuck forward and fold your paddle on the upstream side, preparing for the roll. Push the paddle under the green water and do an eskimo roll to stay in a feature and come
back to the sidesurf position.
